Online Dating Vs. Online Gaming: Would You Have Better Luck In Love On WoW Than OKCupid?

Online Dating

Been having a tough time online dating? Maybe you should ditch Match.com, OKCupid and J-Date look for love in another corner of the Internet -- World of Warcraft.

Online informal education site, Online University, put together a crafty infographic which makes the case that "online gamers get girls." The raw numbers point to the fact that online gaming is simply a bigger pool of individuals: While online dating site E-Harmony has around 1 million members, the most populated multiplayer gaming site, World of Warcraft (WoW) has 12 million.

Though WoW and other gaming sites aren't designed specifically for making love connections, players have used them that way naturally. Back in August, HuffPost Women spoke to couples who met through online gaming and formed real-life, long-term connections. Brian Shushter, co-founder of the multiplayer site Utherverse told The Huffington Post:

There are 100 [virtual] weddings a month right now, which is mind boggling. ... People will send me pictures of their [real] kids. It would be hard to put a count on the number of couples who meet on our world.

So, would you swap your OKC account for a WoW one?

Brilliant! Who could have imagined that an online dating site could now be integrated with gaming site? Amazing isn't it? Read more...

Dating online is so easy I don't even hit on women in real life anymore. Because in person women are just too paranoid and hostile to make it worth talking to them.

I am a 29 year old single mother, an avid gamer & also a long time member of the dating site OkC... here are my two cents; ~Meeting a man via a game (whatever your poison) is right off the bat a shared interest. I want a guy who isnt going to complain that I spend "to much time" playing video games. ~Having a mic on multiplayer games helps. Its like talking on the phone while doing something you both enjoy, so its a way of bonding or connecting. I've spent many hours just sitting and chatting on the mic. ~I have met some incredible dudes playing online multiplayers that I would give anything to meet or spend face time with. In fact I've been playing with a group of the same guys for almost 4 years now and I LOVE them. They love me back, its true.
As for OkC... or any dating site for that matter... They are complete jokes and a total waste of time. Those men dont want commitment, they want to "hook-up". Its pointless and stupid and I dont know why I'm even still a member.
So this article really hit home for me because I've met men on both aspects and honestly.... gaming has been a much more successful route.

The problem is...any thinking 'potential partner who has goals'...does not want someone who is addicted to anything but him/her
WOW a waste of life....live it give it...

Understood; It makes me angry when people think that every gamer spends ALL their time gaming. Completely false. I'm a mom who works up to 60 hours a week. My gaming usually consists of a few hours in the wee hours of the morning and I definitely dont play WoW. But, my point being that just because somebody games does mean they dont have goals. I am an RN and I put myself through school while raising a child ANNND playing video games. I have also found some very intelligent and interesting men whilst gaming. Dont be so quick to judge

I run OkCupid.com. The dating industry stats in this "infographic" are 100% garbage.

There's a nice niche open for gamers. I don't know of a dating site that has got significant traction with just gamers. Its a specific lifestyle pool very suitable for a niche dating site.

"eHarmony has 1 million members"??? where in the world did you get this information? they have over 40 million in the US. this is a cute article/picture with facts pulled out of nowhere to demonstrate a pre-conceived point, trying to go viral. while on some sites like eHarmony and Match, you get a reply rate of 1% because non-subscribers can't reply, there are still many dating sites like Confirio.com and OkCupid that offer many free features including allowing non-subscribers to reply free. i can go on, but do i need to?

40 mill is the number since inception, fyi. it's not the current number of members.
07:39 PM on 03/27/2012
the number since inception means the current number of members, unless they have deleted some, which i don't think they do. if you are talking about active members that have logged in over the last month, that number may be a few million. however, just because a user hasn't logged in, in the last month, doesn't mean they aren't active. it is possible to message someone who last logged in a year ago and get a response. thus we are still at about a 40 million active member count.

"So, would you swap your OKC account for a WoW one?" The real issue is: Lack Of Innovation & Decadence can summarize the Online Dating Industry since years.

Well, that's just silly. There may be 12 million people on WoW, but there are hundreds of servers that only cater to thousands at a time. That and it's incredibly likely that the girl character you see is actually a G.I.R.L. (guy in real life).

The problem is, the person you meet in a game can be very different than that person same in reality. That's the purpose of a game, to allow the game player to explore different personalities than one has in reality.

And while the cynic might disagree, the purpose of a dating site to is project a person's real world persona.

Or to put it another way, I've made numerous great real world friends from OkCupid, but I can think of only real world friend I originally met in an online game (and that wasn't WOW, it was Second Life which is somewhere in-between the two).

Alas, I've visited all of the Inns and Bars in Azeroth and I've yet to meet the Worgen who would rip out my heart and make me whole ... or the Gnome whose brutal strike would debuff my reluctance for love. I guess it's back to the rated battlegrounds for me.
