Trayvon Martin Case Protests Across Nation Culminate With Show Of Strength In Florida

Posted: 03/23/2012 4:01 pm Updated: 04/ 2/2012 4:59 pm

SANFORD, Fla. -- What began as angry grumblings in the town of Sanford over the killing of Trayvon Martin nearly a month ago has grown into a national furor, with countless thousands of supporters demanding justice in organized actions in cities across the country.

In New York City this week, several hundred protestors gathered in solidarity with Martin's parents, in a "million hoodie march" where many wore hooded sweatshirts similar to the one Martin was wearing on the night he was killed. In London they did the same. Students in Miami, where Martin lived, held vigils and protests. Hundreds more have gathered in Los Angeles. And actions are planned for Washington, D.C. on Friday night and next week in Detroit and Philadelphia.

In recent days the media spotlight has shone even more brightly on this case, and on this town and its history of resentments and tension between the black community and the police department. Nearly all of the major news organizations are here, including the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, USA Today and most of the major cable television news outlets.

The news of Trayvon Martin's death has even reached up to the White House, as President Barack Obama commented on the story for the first time on Friday morning. The president called Martin's death a tragedy and said the country needed to do "some soul searching."

"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," Obama said. "I think [Trayvon's parents] are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves, and we are going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened."

Just before 2 p.m. on Friday, the Martin family responded to the president's remarks in a statement: "The President's personal comments touched us deeply and made us wonder: If his son looked liked Trayvon and wore a hoodie, would he be suspicious too?"

"We'd like to thank the President and the millions of people from around the world who have shown their support for Trayvon by participating in hoodie marches, rallies or through social media," the statement continued. "We are all working together to not only get justice for Trayvon, but also to ensure that this kind of senseless tragedy doesn't happen to another child."

Indeed, millions have joined in protests, at rallies and on social media. Nearly 1.5 million have signed an online petition, and the hashtag #trayvonmartin has been consistently trending on Twitter. The episode has become a cause célèbre, with professional athletes and celebrities joining the chorus demanding the arrest of George Zimmerman, who told police that he shot Martin in self-defense and was then released.

But perhaps the most significant show of support for Martin came on Wednesday night when an estimated 30,000 people packed a park along the waterfront here to demand Zimmerman's arrest. They chanted and hoisted signs and small children into the air. "I Am Trayvon Martin" was a common refrain. Local protestors joined out-of-towners in what may be the singular, defining moment of the so-called Trayvon Martin movement. One young man at the event said it was reminiscent of the 1995 Million Man March, "with such a mass of positive energy."

Mothers and fathers, young children and their elders packed close to the stage as news helicopters whirred overhead. From the stage, a number of local ministers prayed for justice to a sea of diverse, but mostly black, protestors. A couple of local politicians promised that justice. And Trayvon Martin’s mother and father said they would not stop fighting until they got it.

"I pledge I will not let my son die in vain," Tracy Martin, the teen's father, told the crowd. "Without you, though, we wouldn't have any support at all ... You all have been our strength."

Behind the family on stage were a few civil rights luminaries, including the Rev. Al Sharpton, who organized the rally. They were joined by activist Dick Gregory, Martin Luther King III, radio talk show host Michael Baisden and television court judge Joe Mathis.

Rep. Corrine Brown (D-Fla.), who has been in Sanford and Washington calling for the immediate arrest of Zimmerman, told the crowd that she didn't care who arrested him -- the federal government, the state or local government -- but that an arrest needed to be made.

"What has happened here is not acceptable," Brown said. "It's not acceptable -- nowhere in Florida, nowhere in this country, nowhere in the world."

"I only want one thing," she continued. "It's real simple: I want an arrest."

The momentum behind what Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump has called "the Trayvon Martin movement for justice" has continued to put pressure on law enforcement and state and federal investigative bodies. The Justice Department and the FBI announced this week that they would be joining the investigation into Martin's killing. And the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has assigned investigators to the case as well.

But there have also been major shake-ups at some of those investigative bodies.

Earlier on Thursday during a news conference at Sanford City Hall, Police Chief Bill Lee Jr. announced that he would temporarily resign as a consequence of his department's handling of the investigation into Martin's killing. Several hours later, Seminole County State Attorney Norman R. Wolfinger announced that he too would be stepping away from the case.

Before the rally Gov. Rick Scott had met with the Martin family and assured them that Wolfinger would be removed from the case, and that a new state prosecutor would come in. Scott also said that a special task force would be formed to review the state's Stand Your Ground law, which allows broad use of lethal force in self-defense.

Crump, the family attorney, made the announcement of Wolfinger's removal to the crowd and was met with cheers and applause. Crump added that officials could no longer stand on the sidelines while Sanford law enforcement wrestled with how to handle the case; they would have to "pick sides," he said.

"We come to you tonight to say, 'Enough is enough.' Trayvon could have been any one of our sons, any one of us," Rev. Al Sharpton said. "They thought it was hot before? Well, the heat has just arrived." (Sharpton made his appearance despite learning early yesterday morning that his mother had passed away.)

"My mother would be ashamed of me if I didn't have the strength to stand up for this man and woman," Sharpton said, referring to Martin's parents. "She didn't raise me to duck a fight."

By 8:30 p.m. the sun had set and the spotlights around the park had flicked on. Offstage, Derrell Ramsay, 26, stood alone, his eyes bouncing between the stage and the crowd. He heard about the shooting the night it happened, but assumed it was a robbery gone wrong. In the following days he devoured the details and they saddened him, he said.

"My little brother is 17, and he's going off to college to be a doctor," Ransay said. "I really feel it. I came out to support the family. I wasn't fortunate enough to be born during the Civil Rights movement, but I'm standing up now for a family in need."

Craig Brown, 34, was further back, holding his infant daughter in his arms.

"He's got a lot more strength than me," Brown said of Martin's father. "It sickens me what [Zimmerman] did to Trayvon. And the way they are trying to just hide him under self-defense, it's sick."

On the night of the shooting, Zimmerman saw Martin walking home from a nearby store and called 911 to report a suspicious person. Soon after, the police said he got out of his vehicle and followed Martin, despite the dispatcher's warning to stand down, that police were on their way. Martin ran, according to his girlfriend, who told lawyers that she was on the phone with him just moments before he was shot. At some point Zimmerman caught up with Martin, asked him what he was doing there and a physical altercation ensued, according to police and recently released evidence. Moments later Zimmerman shot Martin; he claimed self-defense to the police. Police also said Zimmerman initially told them that Martin attacked him when he stepped out of his truck to take down the nearest address.

Back at the rally, Chaunna Buckland, 32, was there with her 13-year-old son, Kayvon. Buckland called the shooting a wake-up call for mothers, especially of black boys. She said she lives in a neighboring town where very few blacks live, and that she is tired of having to run through a checklist with Kayvon before he leaves the house.

But she has to, she said, because her boy, who is husky for his age, "is a black boy in Seminole County." With that, she said, comes fear of racists and the police.

So she warns her son: Never talk back to the police, always keep your hands in plain sight and if he is ever stopped by the police, he is to hand them his cellphone and have them call her.

This case she said "reminds people of what these kids have to go through every day."

"I think it's tragic," Buckland said. "But it's like, in his death, Trayvon has become a hero for us to keep pushing."

Where are the protests when gang members are allowed to roam free? Where are the protests when city "leaders" lay-off police officers and cut gang injunctions and task forces? Where are the protests when sentences are reduced for gang leaders?

Hire killers in Florida, one-time-shooters. Get your victim to vacation there and badaboom. Nice little cottage industry for the vacation capital of the US. Shootings without the benefit of a witness are steeped in reasonable doubt in Florida. Do people know how redneck Florida is? The local gangsters line up punks for the chance at the big one.

Paraniod man (previously arrested for violence and battery against a police officer; and a domestic violence injunction against him), unofficially playing neighborhood cop, actively seeking a suspicious character, targets a lone passerby in a hoodie, concocts unfounded accuusations, carrys a loaded weapon while stalking the innocent teen down the block, ignoring police orders to stand down, chases the teen menacingly, harassing him at gunpoint (ALL RECKLESS CONDUCT BY ZIMMERMAN), then shoots the teen in the chest when teen defends himself. Police arrive and Zimmerman said "I shot him", in self-defense.

Martin, the victim, was tested for drugs and alcohol after his death, but Zimmerman the shooter was not. Police lie to victims parents of Zimmermans “squeaky clean” record. Zimmerman, 28, born in Virginia, aspired to be a law enforcement officer; though not an official member of the national Neighborhood Watch program, he was zealous -perhaps over-zealous- about patrolling his Sanford community, neighbors say.

I apologize to Mr Lee and the rational sensible bloggers for comments that are clearly products of defective mental processes. What we have here is a tragedy that resulted from combining the bigoted suspicious mentality of an individual who acted under cover of an irresponsible NRA sponsored law, that basically says' Shoot first, ask questions later', in order to perpetrate a racist act and try to get away with it.

zimmerman had no job. beyond that, the sanford police dept neighborhood watch handbook explicitly states "You will add your “eyes and ears” to those of the Police Department which cannot be everywhere, all the time, bykeeping a watchful eye and open ear to what is happening in your neighborhood. You will extend their ability to provide security by reporting anything unusual or suspicious, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so they can follow up on your leads. What you will not do is get physically involved with any activity you report or apprehension of any suspicious
persons. This is the job of the law enforcement agency."

please, read the last two sentences and pay close attention.

When I moved to Broward County with my 2 teenage children I knew the biggest problem I would have in Florida was the police. This has been going on for decades. When my daughter got her drivers license I told her if a police car pulls you over you keep the doors locked and call me. Don't get out of the car don't do anything until I get there. She is white. We shared a scion XB and of course the cops thought it was some young black in the car because every time either of us was stopped for no reason they would ask why we drive a THAT KIND of car. My daughter was stopped on average 7 times per month coming home from the late night shift at a restaurant. It was harassment on every level. I CAN NOT FATHOM how horrible it is to be a black child in this state. The only way to change this is to continue to protest....until it changes. I will.
02:15 PM on 03/25/2012
OK, you live in Broward County... Remember when B.S.O sergeant Chris Reyka was gunned down on duty, in a predominantly black community? Why wasn't the black community out there chanting, yelling, and holding up signs telling the cops who did it? Tight lipped. Wonder why the police don't jump at the chance to help the black community?

This "Hoodie" thing is a petty fetishization that obscures a realand grave problem we face. It minimizes Black people's pain and fears and makes it petty pop culture.

THE REAL ISSUE:

This child died because a man was too lazy, and too careless. He was tired of criminals who may have been Black and was too frustrated at those moments (sight to fury) to care about being correct, for at no time during his communications with 911 did he claim an actual criminal act. He applied an ineffective, misguided vigilantism because it comforted him to shoot and kill anyone and he feared no consequences. That boy died because he was Black; his “hoodie” merely a tool to gain the watchman’s unwarranted attention and to eventually lay blame on the victim.

Right or wrong, any discussion of this article of clothing after the fact is simply a means to short-circuit any real discussion about this child’s rights and lack of real and social citizenship. Rights that were ignored in front of that man’s gun, when those detectives “reminded” witnesses what they did or did not see and for the blanket immunity called “stand your ground” protections of those too scared of Blacks and too encumbered to discern whether they’re innocent or not. It is rational prejudice turned into overreaction in the form of a legal deadly weapon and defense from criminal prosecution.

Sadly, though, these “Hoodie” protest only feed into the negative image, especially when most of us Black parents forbid

Trayvon Martin will leave a legacy with us, for each of us to search our souls, and to do better. Trayvon's story continues until justice is served in America. It's been so long gone, it will take a long time to build up to where it's supposed to be.

There seems to be a lot more to the story than we have heard so far.

"Trayvon Martin was dead. The police who came to the scene took his body away and held it in a morgue for three days without checking out his cellphone to find someone who knew who he was."

He was listed as a 'John Doe'. His father was not allowed to identify him for three days.

Please, Read or listen to the news before posting! all you are doing is diminishing yourself!

Tayvon's father knew that his honest & responsible son had left his fiance's town house in that gated community to walk to the 7-11 a ten minute walk away to purchase a bag of candy ( skittles ) for his soon to be much younger step-brother, also a can of chilled ice tea. After an hour had passed. Mr. Martin called his son's cell number. All he was able to accomplish was to have his son's voice mail message come on. He than called the Sanford, FL, PD. Mr. Martin was told by the police officer who he had spoken with on the telephone: "I'm sorry, we do not have information concerning your son" Next Time, Read about it before you post it here or anywhere! I too believe that this should be investigated thoroughly! It sounds as if from the very beginning it was mismanaged. Elected and publicly employed people need to put the safety and welfare of their citizenry first. They should be held to full account if they do not.
