The tragic story of Trayvon Martin's death has swept the nation in recent weeks. Martin, a 17-year-old African-American high school student, was shot dead by George Zimmerman, a Hispanic Florida man who was the self-appointed head of the neighborhood watch. Zimmerman has claimed he acted in self defense and has not yet been arrested. Martin's parents appeared on "Anderson" (Weekdays, Syndicated) to discuss their son's tragic death.
"I honestly believe had Trayvon been a white kid, Zimmerman would have been arrested," his father Tracy Martin said. "I just feel as though the Sanford police department is doing us an injustice."
Trayvon was killed in Sanford, Florida. The family believes Zimmerman should have been arrested at the scene, but he was questioned and allowed to go. "I think it was just in his mind that he was going to confront my son," Martin said of Zimmerman. "Whether or not my son was doing anything or not. He just wanted a confrontation."
Zimmerman disregarded the police dispatcher's request to not get involved, saying instead that he was following him. Nevertheless, he cited Florida's "Stand Your Ground" self-defense law for justification, a claim that thus far has held up. But Trayvon's mother is certain the voice crying out for help on one of the released 911 calls was her son's.
"Every mother knows their child and that's his voice," she said. "It's hard to sleep. I cry every day. I can hear the 911 tapes in my head."
