Vermont Yankee Protest: 130 Demonstrators Arrested At Nuclear Plant's Corporate Headquarters

By WILSON RING 03/23/12 08:20 AM ET AP

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — A 93-year-old anti-nuclear activist was among more than 130 protesters arrested at the corporate headquarters of the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant on the first day of the plant's operation after the expiration of its 40-year license.

Frances Crowe, of Northampton, Mass., said she wants Vermont Yankee to cease operations because she feels it's a threat to the people who live nearby.

"As I was walking down, all I could think of was Fukushima and the suffering of all the people, and I don't want that to happen to New England," Crowe said, referring to the Japanese nuclear reactor damaged last year after an earthquake and tsunami.

When asked how many times she'd been arrested, she answered: "Not enough."

A heavy police presence and ropes blocked off access to the offices in Brattleboro during Thursday's protest. The arrests were made calmly and without any confrontation, with obvious signs that protesters and police had worked out the logistics beforehand.

Brattleboro Police Chief Gene Wrinn said in a statement that more than 130 people had been arrested for unlawful trespass. He said after being processed, they were later released.

A company spokesman said work continued as normal at the plant 10 miles south in Vernon.

"We greatly appreciate the backing of our supporters and respect the rights of opponents to peacefully protest," said a statement issued by company spokesman Larry Smith. "Inside the gates, our employees will not be distracted. As it is every day, their focus on safety will be laser sharp."

A crowd estimated at more than 1,000 gathered in a downtown Brattleboro park before they marched the 3 1/2 miles to the headquarters. Some marched on stilts. Others with painted faces carried signs that read "hell no, we won't glow." Many chanted: "Shut it down."

Gov. Peter Shumlin was sympathetic to the protesters.

"I am very supportive of the peaceful protesters gathered today in Brattleboro to express their – and my – frustration that this aging plant remains open after its agreed-upon license has expired," he said.

In a coordinated action in New Orleans, the headquarters of Vermont Yankee's parent company, Entergy Nuclear, another group of seven activists were arrested after they went into the building and refused to leave, police said. The Journal News reported that five others also were arrested at Entergy offices in White Plains, N.Y.

Loyola University law professor Bill Quigley said the New Orleans protesters live near the Vermont plant and traveled to Louisiana to request a meeting with Entergy CEO J. Wayne Leonard. They didn't get that meeting before they were arrested.

"We're trying to tell Entergy that the whole world is watching, and you can't pollute in one area of the country without consequences for everybody," Quigley said.

The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued the plant a 20-year license extension, but the state of Vermont wants the plant to close and the two sides are fighting a legal battle. In January, a federal judge issued an order that allows the plant to continue operating while the legal case continues in court.

While the protesters gathered on the Brattleboro Commons, Vermont Yankee supporters sat across the street and watched. A half-dozen signs saying "VT4VY" were posted on the lawn.

"The thing is these people are not going to realize it until it's too late what a benefit it is down there. I feel bad for them. I don't think they're looking at the big picture," said Steve Shaclumis of Brattleboro.

Some protesters, including Crowe, were released immediately with citations to appear in court. Others were handcuffed and led onto a waiting school bus. It was expected they would be taken to a police station and then released.

Human and Cycles
Humans and Cycles
Humans can never be trusted with nuke.

There WILL be

Economic Cycles
Social Mood Cycles
Political Cycle
Times of bad industry regulation and capture
Times of bad company internal regulation and blindness
Ignorance
Denial
Greed
Mother Nature
Carrington Event
Terrorist attacks
Waste that lasts forever.

Anyone of these items alone would be enough to say "no nukes".

Exactly, "it wasn't taken seriously when it mattered". Like the central planner now thinking that they can "engineer" an economy, and the nuke planners thinking that they can put every element under control and keep it there. WAKE UP! You just can't play with the most dangerous toy on earth and expect not to get fried.

By the time nuke could even be built to reasonably safe (which wont happen) the cost would be so high to make it a useless investment. The output and profit would no where nearly justify the cost and time.

In fact the Vogtle plants are only projected to make 1.666% annual rate of return, what a joke! And they want your tax money for the loan guarantee, what investor would take that deal....none! Only a captive audience, controlled by a nuke cartel deeply entrenched in the military industrial complex.

Call your congressperson or senator and let them know how you feel about this.

“The renaissance in American nuclear energy has begun." -- Senator Lindsey Graham
Graham said:

"I have long pushed for a renaissance in nuclear energy. Before February of this year we hadn't built a new nuclear reactor in the United States in more than thirty years. Now, in the last seven weeks we have had major breakthrough with the licensing of four new reactors. This is a long-overdue and much welcomed change in policy.

"We worked for years to see these reactors approved and I'm very pleased this long-sought goal has finally been achieved. The construction of two new reactors will be an over $10 billion dollar project and represents one of the largest investments in South Carolina history.

"The renaissance in American nuclear energy has begun. And as long-time advocate for nuclear energy, I could not be more pleased to see South Carolina at the forefront to this revival."

It is data direct from the EPA Radnet. There is only one way to increase the density of uranium in air to the levels detected over the far distances detected. Launch the reactor core.

Credible?
This is simple, there can be no other conclusion.

Why would anyone expect anything credible from a nuker? Exactly, no reason, and every motivation to cover up the unseen.

From the US EPA-
It is important to note that all of the radiation levels detected by RadNet monitors and sampling have been very low, well below any level of public health concern. Across the RadNet system, we saw decreasing radiation levels during April and May. Since May, sample analyses have predominantly shown no detections of radionuclides associated with the Japanese nuclear incident. EPA continues to work with federal partners to monitor the situation in Japan and stands prepared to accelerate radiation sampling and analysis if the need arises. Data will continue to be available on EPA's public website.
In other words there was NOT any appreciable amount of uranium nor plutonium your interpretation of the data is wrong and a pathetic attempt to scare people, It would be laughable except someone might believe you and experience fear and anxiety, which can cause real harm.

EPA is presenting the data (probably downplayed out of the gate anyway) and then just "SAYING" that things are low, even though the reality is 2600% over baseline. Sucking down hot particle of uranium AND plutonium is not negligible.

Most people now understand the lies of the nuke.

The “Background” amount of Uranium in Air in Honolulu is around 5 aCi/M3,  thus making the measured Uranium 2600% higher than Background  .   See Table 9 from the EPA for this data.

NASHVILLE – U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s vote to approve the application of South Carolina Electric & Gas to build two new AP1000 reactors at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station in South Carolina:

“The Commission has made good progress in approving new reactors, and I hope that continues. Nuclear power provides 70 percent of our clean electricity and we need to build at least 100 over the next twenty years to provide the massive amounts of low-cost, reliable, clean electricity that American businesses and homes need to thrive in the 21st century.”

The NRC’s vote of approval today follows one last month for the Southern Company to build two AP1000 reactors at the Vogtle plant in Augusta, Ga.—the first new approval of a reactor in more than 30 years.

Exelon's 'Nuclear Guy': No New Nukes

Nuclear power is no longer an economically viable source of new energy in the United States, the freshly-retired CEO of Exelon, America’s largest producer of nuclear power, said in Chicago Thursday.

And it won’t become economically viable, he said, for the forseeable future.

He is not pro-nuke, he is pro-money, think about it, existing nuclear power plants make electricity for a constant cost, profit is determined by the market price, less reliable supply , increased market price, more profit for the nuclear plants. If more nuclear plants are built, the price is more stable and existing plants don't make as much money...

NRC reports Plant Vogtle contractor manager banned from site

A contractor’s program manager was banned from Plant Vogtle after refusing orders to make procedural changes at the construction site of nuclear units 3 and 4.

The disclosure by Southern Nuclear was made Thursday in an event notification filing with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which requires such reporting whenever there is “an intentional act that casts doubt on the integrity of the fitness for duty program” at nuclear sites.

Lawsuit challenging sales tax on Georgia Power's nuclear fee to move foward

The legal challenge to a portion of Georgia Power's approved nuclear fee for Plant Vogtle will move forward, a Fulton County Superior Court judge ruled Thursday.
Judge Ural Glanville denied the utility's request to dismiss a lawsuit that accuses the company of collecting as much as $100 million in sales taxes and municipal franchise fees on top of approved charges to fund the Plant Vogtle nuclear expansion. The lawsuit was filed by former Gov. Roy Barnes, a Mableton attorney and Democrat, and former House Speaker Glenn Richardson, a Republican from Dallas.

Fear grows in O.C. cities near San Onofre nuclear plant
Officials in nearby San Clemente and Laguna Beach have registered their concern after significant wear was found on hundreds of tubes carrying radioactive water at the plant.

Concern over the safety of the San Onofre nuclear power plant is growing among Orange County cities closest to the facility, which has been shut down since January because of system failures.

Officials in nearby San Clemente and Laguna Beach — both within 20 miles of the San Onofre facility — have registered their fears after significant wear was found on hundreds of tubes carrying radioactive water inside the plant's generators.

Residents in the Orange County beach towns for years have lived with the twin-domed nuclear plant as a backdrop. In San Clemente, which falls within the plant's 10-mile evacuation zone, city-issued potassium iodide tablets and siren drills have become a fact of life.
