Wendy's Animal Treatment Methods Get Revamped

Wendys

PORTLAND, Ore. — Fast-food chain Wendy's Co. is trying to be more humane to the chickens and pigs it uses in its food.

The company's animal welfare council said Friday that one of its chicken suppliers, O.K. Foods Inc. of Ft. Smith, Ark., has started using a low-atmospheric pressure system that renders the chickens unconscious before the birds are handled by plant workers. The process, known as LAPS, replaces the industry standard practice of stunning chickens with electricity.

Wendy's said it is the first quick-service restaurant chain to back the system, which it deemed a major improvement to industry standards. It urged other chicken producers to embrace the practice.

The company declined to disclose what percentage of its chicken comes from O.K. Foods but said it was a "sizable amount".

Wendy's also said that it was working with its U.S. and Canadian pork suppliers to eliminate the use of sow gestation stalls over time. Animal rights groups say the tightly-packed stalls are inhumane. Pork producers say larger stalls increase labor and food costs.

However, several major pork producers have recently agreed to phase out gestation crates and tight pens and switch to larger, more open pens as sentiment about the practice changes. Major pork buyer McDonald's Corp. announced in February that it would phase out gestation stalls in a move that was predicted to be a major shift for the industry.

Animal welfare group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said that it supported Wendy's moves. PETA has worked with the fast-food chain for several years, urging improvements in its practices.

"These are certainly good steps," said David Byer, senior corporate liaison for PETA.

Wendy's, based in Dublin, Ohio, is the second-largest burger chain in the U.S. and operates more than 6,500 restaurants around the world.

The company is trying to burnish its image as a higher-end fast-food chain. It is updating stores, revamping its menu and making other efforts to reinvent itself and move on from a failed combination with the Arby's chain.

Shares of Wendy's fell 7 cents to close at $4.93.

When did fast food become quick service? What genius in the marketing department came up with that?

PETA is making sure that any extra money people may have is going to be spent to pay the extra cost of the food they buy. If you think that fast food will be the only thng impacted think again. The pig farmers and chicken farmers don't supply only fast food places, they supply restaurants and grocery stores as well and those prices will be affected. Thank you PETA!!

Sow gestation stalls would be more humane with candles, soft lighting, and piped-in Barry White music.

I heard recently that Wendy's became the #2 largest Hamburger Franchise in the United States with McDonalds being #1 and Burger King being #3 (Burger King is Still #2 world wide).

I think Wendys has totally gone down hill over the last 10 years. Frank Thomas Died about 10 years ago and many of the changes made since then have not been good for Wendy's.

Personally they have the worlds worst French Fries. When I was a Kid I loved their French Fries, most of the time when I go to Wendy's Now (About 1 or 2 times a year) their fries are always soggy. How do you get soggy French Fries? I will stick to In-N-Out Burger, 5 Guys, Moo Yah burgers if I am going to have a burger.

Anyone else notice that, whenever there's an article on animal welfare, all the little boys on their mom's computers start posting what they think are "funny" little asides? Guess they're trying to make up for their "shortcomings" elsewhere.

What's wrong with a sharp ax? I've used it for years but a good pair of scissors works equally as well

Any progress on this front is good news. I like meat, but if I would prefer the animals giving their lives for my benefit were treated with more care during the slaughtering process.

The ONLY way Wendy's can get my business back is to ditch those ghastly french fries, use those awful buns for saw dust and realize the most important fact: PEOPLE PATRONIZING FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS WANT FOOD THAT TASTES AWESOME FAST AND AT A REASONABLE PRICE. THEY ARE NOT CONCERNED WITH HOW HEALTHY IT IS - IF THEY WERE, THEY WOULDN'T BE BUYING "FAST" FOOD.
01:14 PM on 03/26/2012
ok...this is an improvement , tho very basic. Now let's move on to Pink Slime. When are they going to stop adding this to their burgers?
