Evan Eisler Oberfelder, Hit-And-Run Victim, Arrested For Assaulting Good Samaritan And Police

Hit-And-Run Victim Arrested After Attacking Those Trying To Help Him

A hit-and-run victim was arrested Saturday after he attacked a good Samaritan and responding officers, according to Miami Police spokesperson Kenia Reyes.

Evan Eisler Oberfelder, 23, of Irving, Texas, was hit by a taxi at 5:40 a.m. Saturday on the 1800 block of North Bayshore Drive, according to police. The taxi driver is still at large.

City of Miami Police and Fire Rescue responded to the scene after reports of a female screaming for help.

When they arrived, they found Oberfelder, bloody and partially naked, fighting with a man who had apparently stopped to offer assistance after the hit-and-run, according to the arrest report.

The victim told police he tried to help Oberfelder who suffered from a head injury, but he began hitting the victim in the face and head.

Police say the victim tried to flee but Oberfelder pursued him, attacking him with his hands and feet. Oberfelder physical restrained the victim, cops say, kicking him in the groin and possibly fracturing his hand.

When Oberfelder saw the officers, he said "You called the police? I hate the police!" according to the report.

Oberfelder then jumped on top of a patrol car and put his fists up.

Officers tried unsuccessfully to use Tasers to subdue Oberfelder, who acquired a police baton during a struggle and struck a female on her right arm.

Ten officers were treated on the scene for blood exposure and three officers were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.

All police have since been released, one with a fractured arm and head injuries.

Oberfelder remains at Jackson Memorial Hospital in extremely critical condition from injuries sustained during the hit-and-run.

He is charged with one count of felony battery, one count of false imprisonment, one count of aggravated battery on a police officer, one count of resisting arrest with violence and one count of criminal mischief.

Although police press releases describe Oberfelder as a "partygoer," there are no details about whether the defendant was under the influence at the time of the incident, which occurred just blocks from the Ultra Music Festival.

Police said detectives are looking for a mid-size yellow taxi van with 777 numbers that fled from the scene with passengers inside.
