Syria Uprising: Russia Warns Of 'Last Chance' As Battles Rage On

BEIRUT — Syrian forces attacked flashpoint areas Sunday, carrying out raids and clashing with rebels as President Bashar Assad's allies in Russia said the country may be facing its last chance for peace.

Syrian activists reported clashes in Daraa, the southern province where the uprising began last March.

A spokesman for the rebel Free Syrian Army, Muneef al-Zaeem, said government troops invaded the town of Nawa, with a population of 100,000.

International condemnation and high-level diplomacy have failed to stop the year-old Syria crisis. The U.N. says more than 8,000 people have been killed, many of them civilians. In recent months, the uprising has transformed into an armed insurgency as army defectors and others say they want to bring down the regime by force.

The U.S., Europe and many Arab states have called on Assad to stand down, but Russia and China have protected Syria from condemnation by the United Nations Security Council. Syria is Moscow's last remaining ally in the Middle East and is a major customer for Russia's arms industry, but Russia has recently shown impatience with Assad.

"This may be the last chance for Syria to avoid a protracted bloody civil war," Medvedev told Kofi Annan, the U.N. and Arab League envoy to Syria, during a meeting in Moscow. "Therefore we will provide any assistance at any level."

Annan travels next to China.

Seeking to stop the violence, the U.S. and other key allies are considering providing Syrian rebels with communications help, medical aid and other "non-lethal" assistance.

President Barack Obama discussed the aid options Sunday in a lengthy private meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The leaders are in Seoul, South Korea, for a nuclear security summit.

As the conflict turns increasingly violent, Human Rights Watch accused Syrian forces of using civilians as human shields during recent military operations.

In a new report Sunday, the New York-based international watchdog said the Syrian army and pro-regime gunmen forced residents to march in front of them as they advanced on opposition-held areas in the northern Idlib province earlier this month.

The group cited witnesses who said it was clear that the purpose of the marching order was to protect the army from attack.

"By using civilians as human shields, the Syrian army is showing blatant disregard for their safety," said Ole Solvang, emergencies researcher at Human Rights Watch. "The Syrian army should immediately stop this abhorrent practice."

The west needs to just sit back and watch them kill each other now, so we don't have to kill them later, and get our kids killed in the process.

Just let the Airforce and missles do what they do best! No boots on the ground!

Well, it looks like another Good Reason to go to WAR again! I think we should just cordon off the country, blockaid it and let it play itself out! Don't let them out and no one in and just wait!

Sounds a little harsh, but I have to agree. The west cannot continually assist these nations that are just not capable of living in peace with their neighbours. Their history is one of continual bickering and violence. What reason is there to think this will ever change, because it can't due to the nature of the people who live there. We cannot continue to sacrifice young men, and money that is needed to rebuild at home, in wars that will change nothing. They are not like us and we need to stop trying to make them so, because they will never value what we value, and violence as a solution is just under the surface at all times.

Everyone should stay out of the war, unless genocide is being committed. We don't even know who the bad guys are or who the good guys are.Sometimes, like in the French revolution ,the good guys change into the bad guys and you need something like the French reaction to save the people from the revolution.EHHHH.Lets just stay out of it,Okay?

I see OBAMA is also promising FOOD and AID to NORTH KOREA, in exchange for KOREA to stop builinng NUKES. TOO much money was spent on Notrh Koreas NUKES productions and Nothing on Food for their People. Don't worry OBAMA will give them food and aid and Dollars $$ so they can continue with Necular programs. AMERICAN Tax-Payers are held Responsible again. Korea will never give up on theis NUKES.

Leatherneck Marine Look to the bottom article talks about Obama going to So-Korea for Necular Summitt Meetings. Also many other articles have been posted for USA to give $Millions of Dollars for aid and food, if N-Korea will stop Necular Programs. Waste of time and our tax payers money and aid. N-Korea will never stop. She has starved her working class for NUKES.

Was there a reason why the word "peace" was eliminated from the World News Front Page of this article, there was enough room to include the word "peace!"

One more sensational "headline" to pull in readers.

How droll!

The Russian "announcement" simply states the obvious and gives no indication of any change in their policy of support. Why is this treated ad news?

Screw the communists in China and the Dictators in Russia. Since when did we care what they thought. Face them down like Reagan did and stop doing business with them. Put a huge tariff on Chinese products and bring jobs back to America. Kill Assad and let the people take over their own country. He has supported Hamas and other terrorists for years. Let him meet his fate like Kadafy.

Reagan was a lunatic. He could not stare down anyone. Russia is not doing much business with the US. You guys seem to be in the Cold War mode still to the detriment of your corporations who actually wish to do business with us. Sure, it's a great idea to put a huge tariff on Chinese goods. Just prepare to pay 4 to 5 times more for basic things that typically come from China. I doubt that Americans would be willing to work for the same amount that Chinese do while making all of that stuff. Assad is actually supported by majority of Syrians. The revolution is not actual real. It is mostly carried on by foreign terrorists with the financial backing of EU, Turkey, a few Gulf states, Israel and the US. Hamas is not a legitimate organization. It is largely controlled by Israel despite its outward appearance. It recently supported the Free Syria Army. Way to show its true colors :)) Various Arab resistance groups in either Lebanon or Palestine are not terrorists. They are fighting Israeli aggression and genocide. All methods are legitimate in such a fight. The Libya scenario won't be repeated in Syria. The Syrians know that far too much is at stake. Besides, we have a naval base there. No one is really going to bomb Syria, especially now that there are a bunch of S300 anti air systems on the ground. NATO and the US are not capable of countering those.
10:57 PM on 03/26/2012
"Russia is not doing much business with the US."

According to census.gov, US-Russian trade in 2011 accounted for over eight billion dollars in exports and 34.5 billion dollars in imports. That's fairly significant.

"...S300 anti air systems on the ground. NATO and the US are not capable of countering those."

Really? You don't think ship-based anti-ADA missles could do the trick?

The rest of your post seems like opinion without evidence. Hardly persuading.

With all the unrest in almost every country I can see WWIII on the horizon. Man is destined to repeat history. As long as at least 2 people remain on the planet there will be fighting.
10:04 AM on 03/26/2012
Send nothing, it's not our war, not our problem. They are plenty of people right here at home who could use some help! Why do we keep trying to buy off people who hate our country? No amount of money will ever change that!

what does that matter? Syria, along with a lot of other backwards middle east nations, is not the united states, and their lives are nothing like ours. Thats unfortunate for the Syrians. I wish them well.
03:42 PM on 03/26/2012
That is one of the most ignorant series of statements that I have ever seen, even on the internet. All lives are equivalent, even if they are born in a nation or region that you consider to be backward. If progress is gorging yourself on cheap processed foods that aren't fit for consumption by any creature and letting your days waste away with 40 to 60 hour work weeks and your evenings spent with your brain being inundated with advertising jingles hidden behind mindless television programming...then I think I am with the backward 75% of humanity.
