Tim Tebow, Jets Hold Press Conference To Welcome QB To New York

Tim Tebow holds his first news conference with the New York Jets.

"There's a lot of people here!"

The most elaborate press conference in the history of backup quarterbacks began on Monday afternoon when Tim Tebow stepped to a podium at the New York Jets' facility in Florham Park, N.J.,

"How's it going? Good to see all of y'all," Tebow began before marveling at the number of people who had turned out to hear what he had to say.

After arriving with the Jets by way of a drawn-out deal with the Denver Broncos, the 24-year-old quarterback officially introduced himself to New York on Monday while sporting a grey suit with a light green tie. Standing in front of a dark green backdrop printed with team and sponsor logos, a beaming Tebow dropped one "gosh" and a "yes, m'am" on the massive media contingent while repeatedly returning to the mantra that he is "excited to be a Jet."

After thanking the Broncos during his brief introductory remarks, Tebow opened the press conference to questions. Without any of Jets coaches, executives or PR staffers at his side, he faced a pair of pointed queries right out of the gate.

Welcome to New York!

Asked about the disparities between his account of his involvement in the trade versus the version shared by Broncos vice president of football operations John Elway, Tebow responded that "I told him I would love to be a Jet. I also told him that the Jaguars were my hometown."

Tebow was then asked about a looming quarterback controversy with incumbent signal caller Mark Sanchez.

"Me and Mark have a great relationship. We have had a great relationship for three years," said Tebow, later adding that he got the impression that Sanchez "was excited" about his arrival.

While Tebow cordially answered every question that was fired at him, he made it clear that this media circus was not his idea.

"It's an honor for all of you to show up to hear me say a few words today," he said. "The reason for doing this today is because I have bosses, too. They wanted me to stand up here. I can blame them."

Faced with several questions about the intersection between his faith and his public life, Tebow managed to be forthright about his beliefs while still trying to keep the focus on football.

"In the locker room, it's not something that I'm super outspoken about. That's just who I am and how I live," he said of his Christian faith. "I think the greatest way to share the gospel is by acting it."

At ease throughout the media session that lasted slightly more than a half hour, Tebow passed his first test. It remains to be seen how this move will play on the field for the Jets or any of their quarterbacks, but, judging by the drama surrounding the trade and the strong media presence today, there is no doubt that whatever happens will be thoroughly chronicled.

Here are some of the top Twitter reactions to Tebow's first exchange with the local press:

Tebow is a very poised, polished and polite (but seemingly not phony polite) person. He seems very genuine & likeable to me. But on the field of play it is not his character that will be on trial. (The religious stuff doesn't bother me. Possibly half the sports world is fundamental Christians and we do allow freedom of religion in this country.)

Is Tim Tebow a legitimate NFL QB? If he is then it's time for the Jets to say so and trade Mark Sanchez. This move has got to be extremely humiliating to the "franchize QB" as Sanchez was billed when first drafted, thereby receiving the monicker "Sanchize." No football team can have two starting QBs. No football team can run two offenses. It's too confusing to the other offensive players. It makes little football sense. A QB needs to have rhythm during a game and running two offenses would hinder that for both QBs. Clearly management lost confidence in Sanchez after last year. They of course didn't look in the mirror or look at what the team was really lacking before making this move. So for the sake of Mark Sanchez and the football team he has to go since there's no way they are letting the goose that lays golden eggs go.

Johnson, Tannenbaum and Ryan the worst management of this team and a bigger joke than was played on its fans unwittingly by Leon Hess when he had Rich Kotite manage the team.

I dont know if the Jets just thought Tebow was too good at the asking price to pass up, especially with Sparano being the new OC and his love of the Wildcat.

I kind of think Sanchez was, before last season unwound, considered the more exciting QB in NY since Eli Manning had kind of plateaued after winning one Super Bowl and was on a lot of people's crud list. The "elite QB" interview question at the beginning of last season was kind of a set up and manifestation of how people had come to regard him in the years after the 2007 SB. So, I think Sanchez is entitled to have one bad year, along with the rest of the team on the field and the GM and coach, who also had awful years last year.

Going back to the Dodgers, a lot of NYers root for the underdog. I hope Tebow does well. Like Steve Young said on ESPN, I wish he had landed somewhere where he could start. Maybe he should consider going to the Canadian Football League for a short time, like Joe Theisman and Doug Flutie and Warren Moon did when people doubted their ability to start in the NFL.

Greg McElroy is better than both Sanchez and Tebow, and he was better than them in college. What do the Jets plan to do with the only guy on the team who wasn't afraid to tell the truth about the locker room? Where is McElroy going?

What a terrific idea.

Kurt Warner played there too and I think he came into the league and won a super bowl, if I am not mistaken!

I really feel for Mark Sanchez. Something tells me he's going to be "Nancy kerriganed" in the name of Tim Tebow becoming the starting QB :(
