David Archuleta Cuts Hair for Mormon Mission (VIDEO)

David Archuleta

It’s been a little over three months since David Archuleta surprised his fans with the announcement that he was putting his music career on hold to embark on a two-year Mormon mission. Now, the 21-year-old singer has another surprise for his fans: he’s cutting his hair!

In a new video update on his journey serving with the LDS (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints), Archie tells his fans that he'll be trimming his Bieber-esque locks in favor of a more conservative look. "Just about to go get my haircut for my mission. You have to keep it short and clean, and nicely cut, so I'm going to go do that now."

"This is the last time it'll be this long for the next couple of years," Archuleta added, looking a bit uncertain about the decision.

"But I kinda need one anyway."

Archuleta, who came in second place in season seven to "American Idol" champ David Cook, announced his faith-inspired mission in December at the Salt Lake City concert stop of his "My Kind of Christmas" Tour. At the time, Archie told his fans that the decision to go on the mission was one he made entirely on his own.

"It's not because someone told me I was supposed to do it and not because I no longer want to do music anymore," he told the crowd. “It’s because it’s what I feel I need to do next in my life. It’s the same feeling that I’ve always tried to follow in my life -- the feeling that’s allowed me to have the opportunities I’ve had, the challenges and the blessings, too. And I’ve learned to trust that feeling and answer when it calls. That’s the reason why I know I have to do this in my life," he said.

The Archuleta fangirls on this board gushing over this piece of non-news are downright annoying.

if you knew much, you would know that's not what he's going out there to do. When do they ever come up and say my religion is better than yours! If you don't want relion or don't care keep it to your self.

He is rumored to be leaving today, 28th to a Spanish speaking country where he doesn't want to reveal. He is leaving two albums for his fans, one for Filipino OPM album, the other for US fans. His musical ability is amazing, so rare among young singers in today's music scene where only selling gossips and sex prevails.

It's amazing how much David has done in 4 years. Singer, songwriter, best-selling author (non-fiction), now actor (as leading man), model, speaker and as Forbes said, a philanthropist. Just in the last 10 weeks he worked so hard to leave new stuff for his fans including being filmed in a 5 week Philippines miniseries, recording an album and music video Forevermore in the Philippines, multiple photoshoots in PH and US, and now recording in the US up through yesterday - he's trying to leave as much as he can for the fans. I love his voice and the way he conveys the emotions of music, but the guy himself is inspiring. I'm not Mormon, not conservative, not even Christian. This guy is wonderful human being. He never lies and he never says an unkind word to or about anyone. Everyone he works with comments on how kind and humble he is. He promotes others above himself. He has a pure kindness and humility that is so beautiful and unexpected in this crazy world. He has been a wonderful role model for all ages. We think he leaves today, Mar 28, 2012. I'll miss him a lot. BTW he is DavidArchie on Twitter - we are hoping any updates from David during his mission will be posted there by a family member. #DA2014 I'll be There

My wife and son and I were able to spend an hour with David last week. It was refreshing to see that he is one of the most level headed 21 year olds I have ever met. He has proven that money and the public life are not the only thing that is important. His family and religion are second to none!

While I was surprised to see HP pick this up as a news story, I am gratified that news sources have been following and taking note of the character and honor of this young man. He is exceptional by any standards and I hope a role model and inspiration to other young people who may have become disillusioned by the less than admirable actions of some of the other questionable role models society has offered to them. I wish him nothing but the best and I know he will have a great impact on those whose lives he will touch on his mission.

Bigger news might be that he had time for both a haircut AND recording new music before he leaves, lol ... love what I've heard so far on his new album "Forevermore" (avail. online at Amazon), beautiful melodies and killer vocals.

He is an exceptional singer and even better person. Yes, it is about a hair cut but even more a represent his sacrifice for the next 2 years. How refreshing to see someone in entertainment that is not involved with the seedy side of show business.

I read all your comments Hrover on this (and there are quite a few!) and i just wanted to point out that this little fluff piece is just that--a bit of entertainment. No one is seriously thinking this article is about anything serious.

Your criticisms of religion are kind of interesting. I'm not sure how you can claim to understand religion if you don't even understand the most basic component--faith. When you understand faith then you'll have more credibility. Gotta have it, or it all just seems out there, unfortunately. You should give it a try. I'm not even advocating any particular denomination. You pick.

From when did having a haircut became news? Silly, HP!

When it's the hair of an exceptional young man who can prove that money, fame are not the most important things in life. Refreshing to read about serving others and not wife beating or drug overdose.....

I do know famous people from different faiths who do religious things.

This is no brainer to me.
