A New Orleans police officer resigned Tuesday after coming under fire for offensive comments he posted to a news website about slain teenager Trayvon Martin.

Over the weekend, Jason Giroir, a 13-year veteran of the police department, took to a television station's site to offer his verdict on the death of the unarmed 17-year-old: "Act like a Thug die like one!"

Martin was shot and killed in February while he was walking in the rain, carrying a bag of skittles and an iced tea. The shooter, self-appointed neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman, remains free and has not been charged with a crime.

Giroir's unsavory comments -- which were linked with his Facebook page, clearly identifying him as a police officer -- quickly made their way back to his superiors. He was indefinitely suspended without pay on Monday, and handed in his resignation on Tuesday after learning the allegations of misconduct against him would not be dropped.

From a statement by Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas:

“From the moment I was informed yesterday afternoon that Jason Giroir admitted to PIB investigators that he did write the offensive comments on the news station’s website, I immediately questioned his abilities to continue as a New Orleans police officer. My responsibility to the people of New Orleans, as well as to the professional officers on this police force, demanded I take swift action in this matter. I have accepted Giroir’s resignation, and believe it is in the best interest of this department and this city”.

Giroir is already under investigation for his role in a shooting that left one man dead after a traffic stop.
