Syria President Bashar Assad Visits Devastated Baba Amr Neighborhood In Homs (VIDEO)

BEIRUT, March 27 (Reuters) - Syria has accepted a U.N.-sponsored peace plan, international envoy Kofi Annan said on Tuesday, as troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad raided rebel forces who have taken refuge across the border in Lebanon.

Assad made a rare foray into the heartland of Syria's year-old uprising, visiting a rebel stronghold in the city of Homs that his forces had overrun after weeks of shelling and gunfire, apparently to make the point that he can now tour the streets of the once bitterly fought-over district.

Syrian state television showed video of Assad, wearing an open-necked shirt with a blue suit, walking casually in the devastated streets of the Baba Amr district and talking to groups of supporters and troops in combat gear.

Baba Amr was an emblem of opposition and rebel army defiance until it was reclaimed by government forces early this month after 26 days of heavy bombardment which opposition activists said was totally indiscriminate.

"Life will return to normal in Baba Amr, better than it was before," Assad said.

Activists says hundreds of civilians and opponents of Assad were killed in Baba Amr in February by shelling and snipers.

"He thinks he won and scored a great victory," said opposition activist Saif Hurria, speaking by telephone from Homs. "He wants to show the world he defeated and put down a revolution. But ... it seems he can't even release the video until he has left Homs. That is not control"

Opposition supporter Abu Jaafar said Assad's appearance in Homs was "giving the green light to kill like this again".

I'm quite surprised that Bashar Assad had the audacity to step out in the streets and the courage to boot. After the deaths of so many civilians which consisted of men, women and children, especially children I don't know how this man can look at himself in the mirror. I hope in his heart that he will keep to his word and end this war before there is any more bloodshed. I am not to much in the know about his background and I don't know if he has children, but I get the feeling that he has none otherwise I believe that he would't take the risk, but I could be wrong. 9,000 people have lost their lives in just over a year and so many children will never see daylight again or play with their friends. Children must be protected and I don't mean just small children, it's time to let go of them and get them off the street before they are killed.

Syria is a nation independent of the US. And that means it isn't a US puppet. The US goal is to destroy Iran, but Syria will be a complicating factor in the attack. To make the regional dynamics of an attack on Iran less unpredictable, Syria needs to be either a US puppet or in total chaos. That's why the convenient timing, that's why the US is happy to arm a random collection of "opposition" groups, and why the west doesn't want a peace process that will leave Syria independent.

Hey Dictator, stop pretending, this whole uprising in Syria is against you,and against your murderous regime, the Syrians are tired of the Oppression, injustice for more than 40 years, and they want Freedom, and Human rights, and all you care about is your power at the expense of your people.
Tyrant,it is time for you to leave instead of killing your people, but I do NOT think you have any decency, nor courage to step aside.

Didn't Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi make similar tours - shortly before their defeat?

Assad is a butcher but his is a brilliant tacktition. He financially supported Hezbollha and Hamas, who for the most part oppose secular storng men yet opposed Al Qada the biggest Islamic enemy of the West so he can claim he is fighting terrorists to justy his brutatlity. All along buy weapons from Russia and China and inviting troops from these two countries into the Syria, garenteeing no Lybia style air strikes. Well played hand Mr Assad, now go have a heart attack so your people can be free.

Why should the US be involved in Syria? This is a no win situation. Syria's people should decide for themselves on their government and future. I think the UN is nuts and corrupt. Strangely NATO is being pulled off it's primary mission - defending its member states and being used as a club in other areas of the world. Definitely it needs to eliminate the pirate problem - but why get involved in Syria? The US people have to wake up. We are NOT the world's police force!

Assad was smart, unlike Eygypt, he paid them off as long as they stayed in Lebonnon and attacked Israel
