Officials in Kfar Saba, Israel, have a bone to pick with an an unruly suspect after the man bit the police dog sent into a cell to subdue him.

The man was initially detained by authorities for breaching a restraining order issued by his spouse. After the police showed up at the woman's home, the suspect reportedly threatened to jump out of a window and attempted to assault an officer with a screwdriver, according to Ynetnews.com.

After the officers took the suspect to the station, he again became unruly, which prompted them to send in the dog. While the canine cop managed to bring down the man, the suspect still managed to chomp down on the animal's ear.

The suspect kept biting the dog's ear until cops finally pried his jaws away and shepherded the German Shepherd away from its attacker, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Police said the dog suffered very minor injuries to its ear, and has already received treatment.

However, the suspect now faces an additional charge of assaulting a police dog and remains in custody pending further court proceedings, UPI reported.

Dogs sent into CELLS to subdue prisoners already in a cell? What is wrong with Israel? I mean its bad he injured this dog and all but I think the real story is the fact that this cage match even happened.

Please understand that I am not defending this defendant, nor am I defending spousal abuse that led to his arrest.

However, the practice of using a dog to "subdue" an unruly prisoner is deplorable and vicious. The only means a dog has of "subduing" someone is by biting them into submission. If you were being mauled by a dog, whether it was a police dog or not, regardless of your moral character or mental state, THE ONLY POSSIBLE WAY ANYONE WOULD REACT is by responding to the animal with violence. The police are creating a situation in which you have a 100% guarantee of a further crime being committed and more charges being applied. That is wrong.

This was a police dog! They are considered police officers and you cannot assault them. If as one enlightened (and I say that with sarcasm) poster suggested, he'd break its neck if it attempted to bite him. Well, he (the perp) was apparently a spouse abuser, a cop abuser and a generally nasty piece of work. He'll get charged big time for his behavior. Should have just gone quietly into his cell and shut his trap.

Being a police officer is not carte blanche to violate all laws with impunity. Police are generally shielded from liability from actions taken in the line of duty, but it is very difficult to imagine the circumstances where sending an attack dog to maul a man who is ALREADY LOCKED IN A CELL can possibly be in the line of duty.

A police officer who commits acts that would be crimes outside of the line of duty loses that legal shield. Self-defense against a criminal in uniform is just like self-defense against a fellow citizen. Battery is illegal, but it can be excused with a valid self-defense plea.

The article (and the one in JPost) do no refer to the ethnicity or religion of the person involved -- so it is indeed strange that HuffPo would choose to use the term "kosher" in the headline.
I don't know if it's insulting, or just sloppy, since there is a significant chance the person is not Jewish, and a larger chance they are not observant of those dietary restrictions.
