'Happy Endings': Penny's World Of Lies To Avoid Tea

It was a night of famous celebrity spouses on "Happy Endings" (Wed., 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC) when Penny webbed a web of lies so thick she need a lie-ary to keep track of them all. All to avoid spending time with her old childhood friend Debbie, played by Charlie Day's wife Mary Elizabeth Ellis. Just as her character of "The Waitress" is a little crazy on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," here she was hilarious leaning further and further in with every probing question.

On the other end of the spectrum, Dave and Max were having trouble with their landlord, played by Melissa McCarthy's husband Ben Falcone. With the threat looming of getting evicted thanks to the inherent dangers of Max's trash-stove -- which he wouldn't have had to invent if the landlord would just fix the oven -- Alex found herself double-booked at the fake baby shower for the baby Jane and Brad weren't having.

On one side, she was a lesbian and on the other she was both straight and into the lecherous landlord. But, as was inevitable, the lies completely fell apart, leaving Penny forced to admit to the elaborate ruse. The good news, though, was that the landlord and Debbie found each other across the room, and decided they wanted to have tea together, so all was forgiven.

But the baby shower made Jane and Brad realize something that was missing in their lives. They decided to buy a lake house -- that was an earlier lie. Bonus points if anyone was able to keep track of all of them!

Come back for the season finale of "Happy Endings," next Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
