Wow, I'm surprised her son asked for a military discount to save a few cents (literally.) We get embarrassed about that sort of thing.
but besides that fact, the mother needs to get over herself. I'm sure her emotions were raw but the very thing she believes her son is "fighting for" is freedom of thought. If the employee doesn't believe soldiers do anything for him personally so be it. It is his right to feel this way.
liberalarmyfamily: Wow, I'm surprised her son asked for a military discount
Sorry, but even though the remark was snarky, it does not qualify as harassment and I would agree with those who say she's taken this way too far.
Complain about not offering a discount if you think you deserve it, that's one thing, but the sense of entitlement to "everything" is getting old. WWII Vets were treated well when they left and came back, but they didn't EXPECT to be waited on hand and foot and offered every convenience everywhere they went.
Men and women serve because it's in their blood to serve and defend - not to get a special discount at a fast food place or to be coddled and have their path made easier than other people's.
I say that as a "military" daughter, where military service fed, clothed, and housed me for years Thank them - your sincere word is MUCH MORE MEANINGFUL than offering them freebies just for wearing a hat on a certain day.
This was a mom who was distraught and felt her son needed to be told he was walking on water. I "get" it. I understand it - but that doesn't justify going overboard and making a national case of one person's insensitive but not-outrageously-offensive remark.

Going over the head of the store's G.M. was a bit much. Telling them to send those nasty no-meat tacos to our troops is a worse offense than the kid at the window.! ...Yes . I'm a vet. I would not have taken any offense to a young kids comment on what I , or my fellow vets, have or have not done, I would have just SMH.

I am sorry your son was insulted. It says more about the intelligence of the cashier than anything else. Thank your son for his service to our country, and bless you, momma.
Boomerwoman: I am sorry your son was insulted. It says more
The real question is was the son offended or is the mother just being dramatic? I'm guessing right before he deployed, the last thing on his mind was what a Jack in the Box employee said. I don't think he's going to spend the rest of his deployment fretting over it. The mom needs to get over it and let her son do his job. He probably doesn't care. I did 12 years in the navy and I know not everyone thought I was some sort of hero. I wasn't. I was just doing my duties.

I would be irked too if I received that comment. You should explain to that cashier that your son is risking his life so that she doesn't have to.
No offense, maam (please don't complain to my parents) but two tacos at Jack are $0.99 and your total was probably less than $5.
imissmydog: I would be irked too if I received that comment.
So that she doesn't have to? Don't just lie and pretend like these aren't wars of choice. Afghanistan at one point was somewhat justifiable but that need has long past and was honestly nearly immediately lost under Bush era bungling.

If you think that cashier's comment was beyond the pale - you haven't been out much. Yes, it was snarky, but it wasn't the worst I've heard with my own ears.
I think these mothers who were kids themselves during the Vietnam war and who are now sending their kids away are forgetting what it was like for their older counterparts back then. This whole "I serve, therefore I'm entitled to this and that kind of thanks for my service" is a new and foreign concept. It's their children doing the fighting now, and suddenly the general public can't be nice "enough."
Sorry - I don't agree with the cashier's comment, it was rude, but the mother is actually the one looking more foolish the more noise she makes over it.
bikefolder32: If you think that cashier's comment was beyond the pale
The horrible insult said to her military son: "what has the military done to deserve a discount?"
Not much of an insult. Seems like the outrage is that the cashier didn't bow before her hero son that personally keeps everyone safe at night from the evil-doers on the other side of the globe.

once again we all get insulted it's how you handle it that make's you a better person it seem's the mom didn't handle herself well in front of the public and her son

Mommy gunna fight his battles in Afghanistan too? If he cant handle a dumb fast food counter person only armed with a big mouth...what is he going to do with guns pointed at him.
Mom....get over it and move on....

Good for the mother for contacting the Corporate office. There are times when they need to be more in touch with what is happening out at their stores and how they are being represented to the public. Good for them that they met with her and impressed her with a sincere desire to work with the employee to correct the behavior, and to extend their apology to her son. Hope they do think of some way to send something to his unit to express their commitment to caring about our service men and women. Care packages that include cookies are always a favorite among the troops.

No reason for the employee to say such a thing. No we don't would have sufficed. This may have hurt the solid and his mother. I understand that. I don't see a reason to make such ambiguous deal out of it though. It's amazing to me that one person in any large company can cast such a pall over envelope and everything a company stands for a nd does, or tries to do.

So many people sacrifice their children proudly to the MIC and get huffy if someone doesn't pretend to worship them for "protecting us" and "keeping us free."

Of course. And the moms and dads have the stickers on their cars and demand that their children be viewed as heroes, when the reality is that the parent should have educated their child better about what a beast our government is, and how they're cannon fodder.
