Japan: North Korea Rocket Will Be Intercepted If Launched

TOKYO -- Japan's defense minister Friday ordered missile units to intercept a long-range rocket expected to be launched by North Korea if the rocket or its fragments threaten to hit Japan.

The Unha-3 rocket is expected to fly past western Japan after its launch from North Korea's west coast sometime between April 12 and 16. The plan has raised concerns that a failed launch, or a falling stage of the rocket, could endanger Japanese lives or property.

Friday's order from Defense Minister Naoki Tanaka came at a meeting of Japan's national security council and followed earlier instructions for the military to prepare to intercept the rocket if it enters Japanese territory.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura urged people to stay calm, saying the military is preparing "just in case.

"We don't believe anything would fall over Japan's territory. Please carry out your daily lives and business as usual," he said.

A statement from the Defense Ministry said Japan would send destroyers equipped with Aegis missile defense systems to the Pacific and East China Sea and deploy mobile Patriot missile launchers in Okinawa. An interceptor missile unit is also likely to be deployed in Tokyo, although the capital is far from the expected flight path.

North Korea has said the launch will send a satellite into orbit to study its crops and natural resources. Japan, the United States and other countries claim the launch is a cover for testing long-range missiles, in violation of international agreements.

Seoul has also warned it might shoot down any parts of the North Korean rocket heading for South Korean territory.

Japan mobilized its interceptor units but did not follow through when North Korea launched a rocket in 2009.

Interceptor missiles on the Japanese destroyers would be the first line of defense, and the land-based Patriot missiles would be a backup. Japan has successfully tested its interceptor missiles but has never used them in a real-world situation.

I am pleading with the North Korea State Dept. not to launch any rockets until the ebay package that I mailed is received by the buyer in Japan, less they claim it was destroyed in the blast. Filing damage claims through USPS is a bear.

I'm sure that the current Administration will find a way to ignore any involvement on this issue just as they have on everyworld issue in the past.

I know many on this site don't realise this but we have to be involved in any military action that Japan takes a part of. After WW2. WE wrote the Japanese constitution and it is forbidden for Japan to have a standing army that can engage countries outside of its borders. What Japan has is the JSDF (Japanes self defense force) this is a very state of the art military than can only defend its self from attacks, Anything bigger than that the U.S becomes Japan's military. Hence Okinawa, Camp Zama and soooo many other military installations there. We don't want anything to happen to Japan, because if it does. . .it instantly becomes our war as written by their constitution.

This story is a couple of days old, but scare tactics are a great seller of news, so why not palm it off again. HuffPost readers have short memories.

My bet is that the US will see to it that Japan shoots the missile down on general principles, no matter where it flies.

I hope so but only the Japanese leadership will probably have the backbone. Before our elections that is!

Ahhhh IRAN is the problem. They are enriching plutonium on one side of the country and testing long range missles on the other side. They are going to marry those two technologies and flip one at Isreal. Isreal is going to fire back, India, pakistan is going to get into it, china and Taiwan, and THEN North and South Korea and the middle east is going to go up in smoke. Stock markets crashing all over the world, gas is 15 bucks a gallon, but not to worry, we have a community organizer (OBAMA) to handle it and a former first lady whos main government experience was picking out the Clinton China. Vote for anyone else.

North Korea is not the problem, at least not the immediate proble, the immediate problem is Iran. Iran is testing long range missles on one side of the country and enriching plutonium on the other side. When they marry up those two technologies they are going to stick that plutonium on top of those rockets and flip them at Isreal, because they dont think Isreal has the right to exist. Isreal is going to fire back. We are going to have nukes flying over there. How long until India and Pakistan, both nuclear powers who hate each other get into it? 10 minutes. THEN North Korea uses the distraction to start up with South Korea, China wants Taiwan back, always has. Who knows where the US and the Saudis fit in. And in 12 hours you have the middle east going up in flames, stock markets in London, NY, Vancouver and Tokyo crashing, a worldwide financial meltdown and gas if we can get it costs $15 per gallon. Not to worry though, we have OBAMA (a community organizer) to handle it, getting advice from HILLARY, whos main experience in government was selecting the Clinton White House china dishes. This President and his advisors are making us a laughing stock, it would be funny if it was not so sad.

Take some deep breaths and relax. The big problem with nukes is that if you use them you'll have them used against you. At the end of the day, everyone gets f**ked. The Paks, the Indians, the Iranians,et al may be dumb but they are not stupid.

They will discover aftear all that work, that the damned things are practically useless. Of course they're better than Viagra for these num-nut leaders...

I'm glad nobody took offense to our shuttle flights going off over the rest of the world and blowing them out of the sky as most of the high level strategists on this post are advocating.

Right. And everyone knows that the shuttle flights were really only tests to help us eventually build ICBMs...

Nah, we already have ICBMs, the shuttles may have been one of the few relatively benign activities we ever undertook.

Maybe Japan can send some of the nightmare earthquakes and tsunami's toward Nth Korea!
Then again our zero POTUS will probably send them billions of out tax dollars.

Not quite sure why you needed to bring in my President into this, but I am assuming that you are a paranoid schizophrenic with delusions of racism and cannot help yourself. I am so sorry but I do not pity you (My therapist tells me that pitying mentally deficient people with your syndroms could cause more outbreaks of paranoia).

The racism is blatant, not a delusion in this "person's" case. No pity is deserved. A stay in a locked psych ward, however, is.

Sources report that the North Koreans have tried to light the fuse several times, but they have had no luck. It seems that their matches got wet.

In order to get into orbit, the rocket must be aimed so as to use the Earth's roatation to its advantage. No choice there.

These are the same people who want to nuke the Middle East. They have no clue as to the repercussions.
