Nutmeg Overdose Blamed For Swedish Man's Spitting Attack

HuffPost Weird News  |  By Posted: 03/30/2012 6:19 pm

Nutmeg Makes Man Spit Like Llama
A Swedish man accused of 'llama-like' spitting attacks told a judge that it was because he consumed too much nutmeg.

An excess of one common seasoning has left a Swedish man spitting mad.

The man, a 28-year-old from Gävle, a city in eastern Sweden, was behind a series of incidents in January, where he spat unknown people in the face “like a llama,” according to Swedish website The Local.

A few weeks later, he was arrested on suspicion of sending death threats via text message to two sisters.

During the trial, it was revealed that the accused had been treated at a hospital last summer and went berserk, injuring one of the employees.

He blamed his bizarre behavior on his excessive consumption of nutmeg, which contains an amphetamine-like substance.

Hospital staff had to sedate the man a few times due to violent behavior, such as the time he kicked a guard’s leg and dislocated it and when he tried to strangle a female guard before being overpowered.

The man was sentenced last week to four months in prison for illegal threats, harassment, damage to public property and threatening behavior.

Nutmeg is such a common spice that few people realize it contains myristicin, a natural compound that has mind-altering effects if ingested in large doses.

Some "nutmeg-heads" say the buzz can last one to two days and can be hallucinogenic, much like LSD, according to ABC News.

People who've gone "nutty" by snorting, smoking or consuming large amounts of the spice say the high is more akin to sniffing glue or gasoline than smoking pot. In addition, it is also more dangerous and has more permanent side effects, such as liver cancer, according to NutmegHigh.com.

Heart and nerve problems are also a risk, according to Gaylord Lopez, director of the Georgia Poison Center.

"People have to be really alert," Lopez told ABC News. "A person who has an unrecognized heart ailment could have problems that could lead to irregular rhythms. One plus one can add up to nine really quickly."

Another case of senseless nutmeg-related violence. When will we stop the madness by requiring a five-day waiting period on all spice purchases?---Ty Treadwell, author of Death Row's Oddest Inmates

Hmm......

Which is the "Nutmeg State"?
11:08 PM on 04/01/2012
Actually...I don't think I could buy this one...although nutmeg in high quantities can cause a "high" effect....the spitting would be very out of character. Medically, nutmeg works on the central nervous system and decreases salivation...so he should have had a very dry mouth and spitting should have been difficult. If this had been a one time incident where he wasn't aware of it, I would say they should give him some understanding, but it sounds like this is something he does frequently and needs to be held responsible for. It does sound strange to us to think of it, but if you watched the video, it is true, many things we eat do have traces of harmful things in them. Everyone loves anything "organic" it seems today, I just smile and remember to myself...cyanide, arsenic and many others are completely "organic", but for that matter, we have naturally occurring growth hormones...I'll just hush. I believe this man needs to be held responsible, he knew what he was doing, this wasn't an accident.

A reasoned post.

But, I suspect it was just mis-attribution by an individual who is psychotic to begin with.

Let's see if Rush Limbaugh finds this story and blames the entire Fluke thing on nutmeg.

Then it'll turn out that he's on nutmeg himself.

KavaKava powder is better. mix a couple of tablespoons in fruitjuice, and enjoy.

It has a mild numbing efffect

I found drinking boiler makers had a similar effect.

The best alternative legal 'high' in my opinion is KavaKava root Powder. Use about 2 tablespoons in fruit juice, or just plain water, and enjoy.

the effect has a mild numbing quality.

I found that after about 3 glasses, the effects dont get any stronger, seemingly.

This sounds like a great idea for a 3-d motion picture "Attack of the 50 Foot Nutmeg". The story is about a normal nutmeg that is exposed to massive levels of radiation, develops arms and legs and grows to unbelievable size. It attacks and terrorizes a town. Finally, after days of terror it falls asleep near a grinding mill and is crushed into powder using a huge pepper grinder.
Actually, I don't think the average person would pay to see this unless there was a great double-feature and free refreshments.

I always assumed it was the alcohol in eggnog that fostered the erratic behavior in over-drinkers.
Now I understand that spasmodic episode after eating a plate full of French Toast.
I put lots of nutmeg in the batter.
Um, Um, Good.
