A Florida man who killed his family's pet bunnies after an argument with his wife last year accepted a plea deal for the crime and faces two years in prison.

Reginald Owen Sear, Jr., 35, went to the bathroom and twisted three bunnies in his hands until they died in May after arguing with his wife over who would wake up to feed them, the Sun Sentinel reported.

His two children didn't see the incident, but Sear was charged with child abuse because his kids saw him return from the bathroom with blood on his face, according to The Ledger.

He pleaded guilty on Friday to three counts of animal cruelty, two counts of child abuse and one count of domestic battery. State attorneys urged the plea deal so Sear's children wouldn't have to testify in court, the paper reported.

Sear, of Winter Haven, is expected to spend two years in prison and faces another five years of probation after the animal cruelty incident. He's not allowed to own or care for animals, and will have to take anger management classes after his release.

Sentencing is set for April 11.

Kill a rabbit in FL and you go to prison. Kill a black kid in FL and you walk away scot-free. Somebody had to say it.

Yea, but the rabbit wasn't trying to beat someone to death first. It's now coming out that this 17 year old drug dealer was beating the crap out of the middle age man who shot him. Where were Treyvons parents when he was learning to deal marajuana and break into car? Sad that our Society has gotten to this point that they are so quick to judge. We all know the PRESS is never wrong or biased! (SIC)

And as for this story, I agree that the Mr Sears has some serious issues. According to the PRESS, He has control issues! I think his wife should divorce his sorry butt and get as far away as possible with her children. But I still don't think prison is warranted for killing rabbits. I don't condone his method or reason at all! Like you, it angers me! But there are other punishments that are more fitting. Clearly he is a danger to his Family. Or soon could be! Really Mr Sears, killing Family Pets like that? What an A$$! I love my pets, I also like to eat game meat. But where do we draw the line for punishment? In my opinion, He's a poor excuse for a Father and a Jackass who I would not want living in my neighborhood!

These children will blame themselves for the rabbit's death and their dad's arrest. If only...they'd gotten up and fed the rabbits. Kids always blame themselves. It's what the abusers count on.

Lots of literature that connects animal abuse to child abuse, both as a cause and as a correlation. A man who would kill his children's pets to punish his wife may well have the capacity to harm people. Protecting animals is an immensely important issue in and of itself, but recognizing it as a precursor or co-morbid with human abuse is also necessary.

WTH (what the heck)! This man should have not been arrested. I am confused and perplexed! Animals are being killed everyday by slaughter houses, farmers and by humane (?) animal shelters. To own an animal by taking it out of its environment to be a pet is inhumane. By removing a man from his family, dooming his kids to grown up with one parent and by removing the extra income that sustain his family is inhumane. To have the more people in prison then any Western country is inhumane! What a hateful, vengeful nation of people.

I totally did NOT mean to favorite this comment. Removing this man from his family is probably the BEST thing that could have happened. If this man has enough rage to twist the life out of 3 defenseless animals, imagine the kind of injuries that he could inflict on his children and the outcome of that. The argument that removing this man from his family is somehow dooming them is ludicrous. There are many instances where once the father/mother of a family is removed for such things, the family dynamic improves because said person was an abuser.

Think...

As a retired scientist, I continue to think. As a member of a family of 14 siblings that all participated in sacrificing animals for food (including killing rabbits and chickens with our hands), we all became loving and caring parents. Not one of us became a murderer or abused our kids. And coincidentally, none of us believe in caging an animal in our environment for a pet(?). Such is the dynamic of a world with many different thoughts. You disagree with me, but you are civil. Thanks.

Maybe when he gets out of prison, the NFL will give him a $100 million contract and parade him around as a shining example of "rehabilitation and redemption".

I doubt it though....

"He's not allowed to own or care for animals" I would hope not, "and will have to take anger management classes after his release." The state, insurance companies or whomever may want to save the time, money and energy on "anger management" for this clown -- pretty sure it's a waste, and won't prevent his future premeditated violent outbursts nor his depraved indifference to life, next time he twists a neck and is seen "with blood on his face" his victim may not be bunnies, but innocent, defenseless humans.

Anyone that can get angry enough to kill the family pets will likely graduate to harming children in the future. (or his spouse)

Was it the Cadbury Bunny who makes that stupid chicken-clucking noise? I'd strangle that too. I hate those things too. Tried one ONCE--once. Closest to what I ever want to believe is an abortion surrounded in chocolate. *ick*
