Hillary Clinton Weighs In On Rush Limbaugh's 'Verbal Assault' On Women

Hillary Clinton Rush Limbaugh

Hillary Clinton weighed in on Rush Limbaugh's recent controversial comments, condemning the conservative radio host's "verbal assault" on women like Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke and calling for a "return to civility" from all sides of the political spectrum.

During an interview with MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell that aired Monday, the Secretary of State discussed the backlash to Limbaugh's characterization of Fluke as a "slut" and a "prostitute."

"As a woman and as someone who can be can vaguely remember being a young woman, and as a mother of a young woman of that age and generation, I thought the response was very encouraging," she said. "The response from the public, the response from women cutting across all kinds of categories, the response from advertisers, so I'll let that speak for itself."

While Clinton declined to discuss the controversy's connection to the 2012 presidential campaign, she said that Limbaugh's attacks on women have no place in the public arena.

"We as a nation have every right, and in fact I welcome it, to engage in the kind of debate and dialogue that is at the root of who we are as Americans," she said. "But let's not turn into personal attacks and insults. We're beyond that, we're better than that, and people in the public eye have a particular responsibility to avoid that."

Mitchell also asked Clinton about her daughter's appearance on a panel with Fluke. During the panel, Chelsea Clinton pointed out that she too had been attacked by Limbaugh when she was 13 years old.

"I think we need to call people out when they go over the line," the Secretary of State said in reference to Limbaugh's comments about Fluke and her own daughter. "They're entitled to their opinion, but no one is entitled to engage in that kind of verbal assault. Let's keep it on the issues."

Limbaugh and the rightwing would have loved nothing more than for Hillary to step in it and become embroilled in an endless controversy. Hillary deftly responded yet she avoided becoming part of the issue.

Limbaugh gets to say whatever he wants with no restraint. If on the other hand I post what I think of him in unvarnished terms it would never be posted here. That is sad in the extreme.

As a people we should never forget what Limbaugh said about the women of Georgetown. Especially we should remember it when we go to the polls in November. Remember his hatred of women and that it (hatred of women) is part of the republican way of thinking. I do not want any republican to be elected that harbors that sort of thought pattern.

Today Limbaugh called Obama a thug (see limbaugh website for proof) and said he wasn't trying to be provocative. I wonder...how else am I to take a statement like that?

Hilary Clinton 2016. I remember the gruesome Limbaugh attach on a 13 year old child.
It's wonderful that he is the mouthpiece and head of the republicans. LOL

i don't think welborn was laughing at ms. clinton. he was saying that Limbaugh is laughable and is the GOP's first man guy, they are afraid of him. for some reason rush hates women, why i don't know but i do know that after he went after Chelsea, i stopped watching him or listening to his shows (i would like to point out that i never, ever agreed with his politics). the only way to stop him from doing what he does is to stop listening to his show and let the people that sponsor him know it. that's one of the reason's why he is off TV, the other reason is people debated him and he could not answer them, he is afraid of someone calling him out and pointing out the flaws in his beliefs . if anyone tries to, they are hung up on and he calls them names. that's his stik...third grade mentality.

Hillary Rodham Clinton has come of age.
She is the ultimate diplomat, having vast knowledge of both foreign as well as domestic affairs.
Like any great diplomat, what she didn't say about Rush Limbaugh was more profound than anything she could have said. (A subtly potent weapon/ability she shares with President Obama, btw).
Well spoken Mme. Secretary, I like many others will support you wholeheartedly in whatever you undertake once you leave The State Department.

Believe it or not all you “gals” out there WE WOMEN who don‘t share in your sense of “womanly duty”, are exceedingly capable of actually SPEAKING FOR OURSELVES and really don’t need any help from “Ya’ll”, on anything.

Whether you decide to “stand by your man” is of course a matter of personal choice, however, the majority of women in this country would tell you that we actually know how to focus on more than one issue at a time.

If women on the right choose to follow in the footsteps of what their boyfriends, husbands, daddies and grand old daddies of the Party tell them to, good on Ya, sister, have at.

However, do not presume that the rest of us are willing to jump into your bed of self-imposed suppression and containment.

We love freedom enough to allow you to do that to yourselves; however, we refuse to allow you to throw us into your mandatory to bed of domination.

Women of the 21st Century know when our constitutional rights as American citizens are being attacked and violated; believe it or not the length of YOUR skirt is NOT a deciding factor in, MY FREEDOM.

Absolutely agree with you. To each her own, even those who are choosing their own oppression. I just ask they only apply it to themselves. Don't care for oppression myself and will oppose it at every turn. f&f

Let me state right off that I think Hillary Clinton is an intelligent, capable person. That said, be warned that my next comment is petty and irrelevant and unworthy. Here goes. Someone please tell Madam Secty to get an age appropriate hair cut. She has a pretty face, but it is the face of an older woman and would look much prettier and more dignified with hair short and the natural gray.

Strictly your opinion. If you want to wear your hair short and gray, you go ahead and do it.

Definitely just my opinion. But, I do think she would look more dignified and actually prettier without the long, stringy, bleached blond hair.
