Kentucky Beats Kansas, 67-59: Wildcats Are NCAA Basketball Champions

By EDDIE PELLS 04/ 2/12 11:55 PM ET AP

Kentucky Kansas
Anthony Davis #23 and Doron Lamb #20 of the Kentucky Wildcats celebrate with their teammates against the Kansas Jayhawks in the National Championship Game.

NEW ORLEANS — No matter where Anthony Davis and his buddies go to make their millions, their ol' Kentucky home will long remember this championship season.

The Wildcats hit the jackpot with their lottery picks Monday night, ignoring Davis' bad shooting night and parlaying a roster full of NBA talent into a 67-59 victory over Kansas for the team's eighth national title – and its first since 1998.

The one-and-doners did it in a wire-to-wire victory – a little dicey at the end – to cap a season in which anything less than bringing a title back to the Bluegrass State would have been a downer. They led coach John Calipari to his first title in four trips to the Final Four with three different schools.

Doron Lamb, a sophomore with first-round-draft-pick possibilities, led the Wildcats (38-2) with 22 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers that put them up by 16 with 10 minutes left.

The Jayhawks (32-7), kings of the comeback all season, fought to the finish and trimmed that deficit to five with 1:37 left. But Kentucky made five free throws down the stretch to seal the win

Davis' fellow lottery prospect, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, was another headliner, creating space for himself to score all 11 of his points in the first half.

Davis, meanwhile, might have had the most dominating six-point night in the history of college basketball. He finished with 16 rebounds, six blocks, five assists and three steals – and made his only field goal with 5:13 left in the game. It was a surefire illustration of how the 6-foot-10 freshman can exert his will on a game even on a rare night when the shot isn't falling.

Helps when you've got teammates like this. Davis is the likely first pick in the draft should he choose to come out, and Kidd-Gilchrist won't be far behind. Another first-round prospect, freshman Marquis Teague, had 14 points. And yet another, sophomore Terrence Jones, had nine points, seven rebounds and two of Kentucky's 11 blocked shots.

Kansas also has a lottery pick in AP All-American Thomas Robinson. But he was harassed all night by Davis and Jones and finished with 18 points and 17 rebounds on a frustrating evening nonetheless.

The Jayhawks won the "B" League this year, as Calipari avenged a final-game loss to Bill Self back in 2008 when Cal was coaching the Tigers. Not a bad season in Lawrence, though, considering where KU began.

Kansas lost four of its top five scorers off last year's roster. There were times early in the season when Self and his old buddy and mentor, Larry Brown, would stand around at practices and wonder if this was a team that could even make the tournament. It did. Won its eighth straight conference title, too.

None of this, however, was for the faint of heart. The Jayhawks trailed by double digits in three of their five tournament games leading to the final and played every game down to the wire. They fell behind by 18 late in the first half of this one and this time, there was no big comeback to be made; not against these guys.

Davis went only 1-for-10 from the floor, but he realized early this was no shoot-first night for him at the Superdome. Sporting his near-unibrow, which the UK Wildcat mascot also decided to paste on, he endured the worst shooting night of a short college career in which he makes 64 percent. No big deal. He set the tone early on defense, swatting Robinson's shot twice, grabbing rebounds, making pretty bounce passes for assists.

Early in the second half, he made a steal that also could have been an assist, knocking the ball out of Robinson's hands and directly to Jones, who dunked for a 46-30 lead.

Then, finally. With 5:13 left in the game, he spotted up for a 15-foot jumper from the baseline that swished. The crowd, a little more full of Kentucky fans than Kansas, went crazy. If this guy only stays one year and only makes one shot, they're fine with that.

It's the new normal at Kentucky, where Adolph Rupp set a standard, Rick Pitino lived up to it for a while, then Calipari – hardly the buttoned-down type – was hired to bring back the glory.

He goes for the best player, no matter what their long-term goals.

Normally, the prospect of losing all those players in one swoop would have people thinking about a tough rebuilding year.

But Cal has mastered the art of rebuilding on the fly.

He's the coach who brings in the John Walls, Brandon Knights and Derrick Roses (at Memphis) for cups of coffee, lets them sharpen up their resumes, then happily says goodbye when it becomes obvious there's nothing left for them to do in school.

The coach won't apologize for the way he recruits or how he runs his program. Just playing by the rules as they're set up, he says, even if he doesn't totally agree with them. Because he refuses to promise minutes or shots to any recruit and demands teamwork out of all of them, he says he comes by these players honestly.

He has produced nine first-round picks in the last four drafts with a few more coming. This latest group will have an NCAA title in tow and the everlasting love of a fan base that bleeds basketball.

Congrats to Kentucky.
Would love to have seen outcome if Carolina's guard does not get injured....
I know, that's part of the game!

Don't understand why people are insulting these young men, while hockey and baseball players barely finish high school. At any rate, I have never seen a team with this much talent play this unselfishly. It was truly remarkable, there wasn't a single isolation play run the entire game, despite the fact that any of the starting five could have do so at will. Great coaching.

Hallelujah! Congratulations, Wildcats! I predicted that you would win.

Congrats to Kentucky. That makes Calipari 2 and 1...1 win and 2 forfeits for cheating. Nice to know Kentucky will do anything to win. A university with no ethics. It is not the players fault at all as they are a great team.

The University should be ashamed of itself for the coach they employ, the massive money he is paid, and the rising tuition and cut backs for the real students. The truth is that the universities mission is to teach people in an ethical manner and clearly in this instance they have not.

I sure noticed the billboard on the scorers table decrying the fact that people think these are not student athletes. What a joke that is given that most of the team is one and done and also given the horrible academic situation at U Conn and ythe fact that their coach is still employed. The NCAA is a sorry spectacle.

I wonder if this win will hold up for a year? With his track record I would say probably not but we shall see.

Kansas showed lack of disicpline in first half..made lots of unforced errors in game including missing two easy slam dunks. Even at the end a three point shot was blown by player losing the handle on the ball when shooting resulting in an unforced walking violation.

The work of the Final Four MVP, Davis...amd #1 defensive team in nation. but "lack of discipline" if it makes you feel better.

Unforced...LOL.

Last year, Kentucky (The state of) won a "national" championship to embarrassment--the bottommost "worst" government for least clean public spaces and conduct--in the 2011 American State Litter Scorecard, presented at the ASPA national conference.

not interested in fans, but Kentuckians need to stop engaging in illegal behaviors and clean up their state.

I am really torn about this whole "won and done" thing. I personally feel that if these kids are good enough; drop the one year rule and let them go to the NBA. The ones who are not as good, stay in school and maybe college basketball can be go back to being just college ball and not just a glorified NBA Developmental League....with so much pressure and salary being paid to these coaches, guys like Calipari are only recruting to win titles and pad his salary....why should these kids play and make money for schools like Kentucky(and high priced coaches) when they can just go to the league and make money right away for themselves?
03:22 PM on 04/03/2012
What's wrong with you people? How can you people be so disrespectful to #1 Kentucky and the coach? These kids came to KY. because they have a dream, and saw the program as a springboard to achieve that dream, as will others. Calipari is the dream maker right now in collage basketball, for instance John Wall who makes 5.5 million a year in the NBA and has a Reebok contract worth 35 million. There's alot of kids that graduate will never see that kind of money offered to them. You people can take your absurd criticism of this fine university and flush it. Your sour grapes is probably because you realize that UK is the center of the collage basketball universe right now and in the future. GO CATS GO
10:58 PM on 04/03/2012
Few points:

- Your favorite team just won the national championship, don't worry about what a bunch of people on a message board are saying, enjoy it
- UK is currently ranked as the 124th rated college in the US, that doesn't necessarily fit under my definition of a fine university
- Pretty sure John Wall would've made that money without that year in Kentucky, as he was widely expected to be the first pick of the draft before he even started playing under Calipari
- No one's blaming the kids, if I were in their shoes I'd leave as soon as possible too. The problem arises when you pretend to be an "institution of higher learning" and then accept "students" who you know have no intention of actually getting a full education
11:24 PM on 04/03/2012
Because they employ Calipari the only man to ever have TWO national championships voided for cheating. The players are great and not part of this. The university and the people of the state who pay him should be ashamed.

If you think Calipari had anything to do with Wall making millions you do not know basketball at all. You worship someone with no ethics and a flagrant cheater. Nice thing to be proud of.

I'm happy for John Calipari.

I watched his UMass vs Temple battles for years. He taught these one-and-done players how to be unselfish.

It's a real shame that they're leaving for the NBA. Some of them could use the college maturation.

And they insist on calling these 'college' teams just to bring in the MONEY? They're as bad a roMONEY.
02:27 PM on 04/03/2012
Two things disturbed me, One: The Star Spangled Banner what a disgrace to each and every American. The Band and The NCAA owe us all a apology. Two: while the Wildcat players are true Champions their coach should not be a college coach. We don't need a man with his character flaws controlling the minds of young men. The NCAA is plainly saying they support Cheating, what a shame for all the Coaches who do it the right way.

Two things...I thought the Star Spangled Banner rendition was a welcome change from all the diva screeching performances of the past.

Second thing.....Calipari has never been implicated in any cheating, and he has always played by the NCAA rules. The NCAA cleared Rose three(3) times to play. So you tell me of any team that would have not played him. But, please don't allow the facts to color your opinions.
04:04 PM on 04/03/2012
2 seasons of coaching completly wipeout of the record book due to cheating fact, fact, FACT FACT FACT FACT CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER. Just the fact.

"...controlling the minds of young men"??

He's their coach, that's it... albeit for about 10 months before most of them leave.

These young men have parents, you know. And if you have kids, you know parents can't control their kids minds either.

When Kansas pulled to within 6 and had the ball - I'm sure Calipari was thinking "oh boy, here we go again." Remember his Memphis team was up by 9 with 2:11 to play in 2008 - and they lost.
I'm happy for him. Kentucky is an awesome college team.

Considering these kids get free room, food, and school I think they if they go pro early they should pay back the school that cost. With the millions they'll make in guaranteed money should be no problem to pay back the school that amount. Also since these kids rarely go to class, they should get lowest priority in picking classes.
