March Weather 2012: Month Was Warmest On Record Across Half Of U.S., Expert Says

March Weather 2012

By James B. Kelleher

CHICAGO, April 2 (Reuters) - Last month was the warmest March on record across half of the United States with summer-like temperatures providing some welcome news to the country's farmers and clothing retailers, a weather expert said on Monday.

Forecasters predicted April could be another warmer-than-normal month, though they said temperatures were likely to fluctuate in a more seasonal pattern in the first half of the month and that fewer records would be shattered.

Accuweather.com said cities in more than 25 states, as well Washington, D.C., broke records for average daily temperatures last month, including Chicago, Oklahoma City, Des Moines, Milwaukee, Indianapolis and Detroit.

New York City and Philadelphia both came within 0.4 degrees of beating existing records for average temperatures in March.

Albany, New York took the prize for breaking the oldest temperature record on the books, according to Accuweather.com. Its average daily temperature in March was 45.9 degrees, breaking a record of 44.4 degrees set in 1859, the private weather forecasting firm said.

St. Louis also broke a longstanding record, according to the National Weather Service, enjoying its warmest March since record-keeping started in 1874.

The average temperature in St. Louis in March was 61.1 degrees, the Weather Service said, soaring past the former record of 57.7, set in 1910.

The unusually warm temperatures allowed farmers in the country's Corn Belt to plant 3 percent of this year's corn crop before the traditional April 1 start to the planting season, the U.S. Agriculture Department said on Monday, matching the fastest pace on record.

The USDA report did not show how much corn was planted in Iowa, the country's top producer. But planting in Illinois, which usually produces the second largest amount of corn, was 5 percent complete by the end of the month, the department said.

Cropcast Ag Services, a private forecasting company and division of MDA EarthSat Weather, predicted March "will surely go down as one for the ages."

The summer-like temperatures are also expected to have boosted the fortunes of clothing retailers, prompting consumers to snap up spring clothing earlier than usual and leading to broad sales gains at top U.S. chains.

The milder winter left the stores stuck with an inventory of warm clothes in December and January. But most of the retailers accelerated their shipment of spring products to take advantage of the weather.

As a result, analysts expect retailers to build on the sales gains they posted in February when they report sales for March on Thursday.

Mike Pigott, a forecaster at Accuweather.com, said the long-range forecast suggested a good chunk of the country would enjoy warmer-than-normal temperatures again in April, especially in the latter half of the month.

In the meantime, he said residents who were spoiled by the summer-like warmth in March will be subjected to several weeks of more seasonable and more spring like fluctuations in temperatures.

"The pattern will feel more normal than what we saw in March -- at least for the first half of April," Pigott said. (Additional reporting by David Bailey, Bruce Olson, Julie Ingwersen, Christine Stebbins, Nivedita Bhattacharjee and Mark Weinraub; Editing by Greg McCune)

"Freak chance was mostly to blame for the record warm March weather that gripped two-thirds of the country, with man-made global warming providing only a tiny assist, a quick federal analysis shows."

"February marks the 324th consecutive month of temperatures above the long-term average"

NOAA says that too.

I wonder what they'll say next.

Hmm ... but just 12 months ago we had a winter that was colder than the long-term average. The prior winter was even colder.

You see ... you are mixing global data with local. Sticking to global data is preferred when talking about climate change. But this article is about local weather ... March 2012 weather across half of the US.

I don't know whether to say "kudos" to you or suggest you stay in context. :)

Americans.... Just because the US Recently had warm temperatures, the whole world is having record temps too. When actually, January and february were cold elsewhere in the world. March data not out yet.

The righties do not care about climate change and warming of the earth....It's now and immediate gratification for their greed. The Koch brothers and most of their elk would be fossilized by than. Just recently it was hotter in Chicago in late Feb/March than Miami for several days!

You really should try to find out what's in store for us with the additional CO2 we have now. Continuing to add CO2 will exacerbate the effects.

Just a reminder for everyone loving the "unseasonably" warm March weather. While fruit trees are blooming early in the northeast - the honeybees that usually pollinate them are still in California pollinating Almonds. No second chances when it comes to pollination.

Besides that, these early bloomers are more susceptible to "normal" spring frosts. We need to be careful what we wish for.

When I think Georgia - peaches comes to mind. Many varieties of peaches are "self-pollinating" which means a lower requirement for honeybee pollination. Apple orchards, blueberries, etc. are very dependent on bee pollination for economic yields.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Georgia ranks 14th in the nation in honey production and second, behind California, in queen bee and packaged bee production," said Keith Delaplane, an Extension Service entomologist with the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. "These are bees that are shipped all to beekeepers over the world for starting up colonies and for crop pollination. We dominate on the east coast as a supplier of bees."

For fruit- or nut-bearing crops, pollination can be a grower's last chance to increase yield. It’s the degree and extent of pollination that dictates the maximum possible number of fruits. All post-pollination inputs, whether growth regulators, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides, are generally designed not to increase yield but to conserve losses. Because of its yield-optimizing benefits, bee pollination can play an important role in maintaining a sustainable and profitable agriculture with minimized disruptions to the environment.

Average Global temperature is expected to be 4F or more warmer by 2060.

With warmer temperature comes more moisture in the atmosphere. Increased temperature means more energy leading to more violent unpredictable weather related events like Katrina. Weather related destruction will be in hundreds of billions with great loss of life.

In other words, a warmer planet will become less hospitable for the next generation and generations to come. There will be no way to reverse the GW trend. Prevention is the only option.

4 degrees!!!! Totally discredited. And btw, the climate has gone through a benign period for the last 50 years on a historic basis. We are merely returning to normalcy.

Warmest Spring on record is starting to become the norm. Last one had some serious consequences for the southwest in terms of fires and plumes of smoke inundating communities when the wind shifted. Even city parks closed by the river. Going month-to-month on my lease and departing to Vancouver/Whistler or California for my summer vacation if we get another fiery summer.

nothing to see here folks..."nice weather" is great for the clothing business!
Don't listen to those greedy attention seeking "science" nerds who are jealous of our life style and lack our common sense! We might be able to set rivers on fire and soften the shells of birds but only a God can alter weather, and I can see snow from my house! And did you ever meet anyone who enjoyed being stung by bees when we still had them? Case closed!!

And don't pay attention to the ice caps increasing ice coverage the last two years or the unusually cold climate in Europe this year. Oh, and forget that cold winter last year in my neck of the woods (New England).   Only the ignorant would look at their local weather for the last few years and assume they can pontificate on climate change. What a joke.

was just discussing this w/ my sister yesterday. it's like no matter what, with humans in the mix we can't seem to think of any other way this was/is gonna go.

as migratory paths are contaminated and the times for migrations to occur ping all over the place, as the bees and bats and songbirds continue to decline, more insects will come into play and eventually, in the not so distant future we'll see their precious centralized food system collapsing.

might sink in then. or when they're out of water. or brown/black outs occur from intense heat waves causing their precious AC to go out.

so many things coming that could snap em into reality, but it won't matter, because like you said, people won't change. they'll still want all of industrial civilization AND somebody to 'fix this'.

Would Rick Perry care to comment on his theory?
10:08 AM on 04/03/2012
And why was March the warmest on record? Surely it had nothing to do with all the CO2 we're dumping into the atmosphere.

One small detail against the AGW backdrop involves the "traditional April 1 start to the planting season." Some Northern farmers are putting corn in now, but generally speaking the planting schedule follows the crop insurance earliest-planting date(s). Crop insurance doesn't cover (or covers less of) losses for planting done before the insurance 1st-plant date, which is about April 10 for the Corn Belt. Also, seed is still arriving from South America (!). In a way, the ~10 days generally might not matter, as the ~ April 10 date "should" allow enough time before early fall freezes. It will be interesting to see if the insurance date begins to inch back as AGW rolls back Spring.

that would be an interesting thing to keep an eye on. industry does believe in AGW, they just don't publicly acknowledge it, but a rollback on planting dates would seem to belie the public proclamations or silence on the matter.

Bad headline! No mention of why we had warmer temperatures. A better headline would have been: Ecomonic Impact of Unseasonably Warm March Temperatures. Are your editors not reading the articles? That's just sloppy. I can take the sceaming headlines that don't fully deliver, but factually incorrect headlines are inexcusable.
09:52 AM on 04/03/2012
C'mon HuffPo, you didn't deliver on your headline to say WHY March weather was the warmest on record. Your headline writers are at it again.
