Obama Super PAC Targets Mitt Romney Ties To Oil

KEN THOMAS   04/02/12 07:23 PM ET  AP

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama's campaign accused Republican Mitt Romney of siding with "Big Oil" in a new television ad released Monday, signaling an escalation of a general election campaign and a vigorous debate over gas prices.

"In all these fights, Mitt Romney's stood with Big Oil – for their tax breaks, attacking higher mileage standards and renewables," the Obama campaign said in the new ad, which marked the first time the president's campaign has publicly attacked Romney by name and made clear it views the former Massachusetts governor as Obama's likely opponent next fall.

Obama's second ad of the presidential campaign came hours after the release of a similar spot by the Democratic outside group Priorities USA Action, which argued that the oil industry is trying to help Romney win the White House to protect its own profits and tax breaks.

The twin ads sought to blunt a $3 million-plus ad campaign launched by the American Energy Alliance blaming Obama for rising gas prices and his decision to delay the Keystone XL pipeline project. It reflected the degree to which Democrats feel vulnerable as gasoline prices top $4 a gallon in many U.S. markets and pose a threat to the economic recovery, the key benchmark in Obama's case for re-election.

Beyond energy, the ads made clear that Obama's campaign had entered a new stage in which it hopes to define Romney as being beholden to big business well before he secures his party's nomination and seeks to present himself as a viable alternative to Obama.

Romney's campaign and Republicans said the ads reeked of desperation from a White House grappling with high gas prices. Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said it was no surprise that Obama was "spending his soon-to-be $1 billion war chest to attack Mitt Romney and deflect blame for his failure to control gas prices."

The Republican National Committee, which is gearing up to help the GOP nominee quickly pivot to the general election, said Obama was "panicked" because his energy policies had "failed to do anything about soaring gas prices that are hurting families across the country."

The ads from the outside groups were airing in states expected to play a deciding role in the presidential election: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia. The Obama campaign ad was appearing in six of those states but not airing in Michigan and New Mexico.

Obama's campaign has sought to shackle Romney to business and oil interests at a time when oil companies rake in soaring profits. It noted that the American Energy Alliance was run by a former lobbyist for Koch Industries, an industrial firm whose top executives are Charles and David Koch, both prominent supporters of conservative causes.

The ads, however, show the degree to which the Obama campaign needs to defend itself against unlimited money raised by outside groups supporting Republicans. Priorities USA has struggled to compete with some of its Republican rivals, forcing Obama's team to go on the defense and spend money on TV ads seven months before the election.

Appearing with the leaders of Canada and Mexico, Obama faced questions Monday at a White House news conference tinged with presidential politics. Obama defended his health care law following last week's Supreme Court arguments on the constitutionality of his signature accomplishment, saying he expected the court to uphold the law.

Asked about Romney's recent questioning of Obama's support for "American exceptionalism," the notion that America plays a unique role as the world's leading superpower, the president said his "entire career has been a testimony to American exceptionalism."

He then offered a sharp retort against Romney, whose quest for the Republican nomination has dragged into the spring against Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich. "I will cut folks some slack for now because they're still trying to get their nomination," Obama said.

A few hours later, his campaign had disclosed its plans to strike back at Romney on television.

This advertisement tells us that big oil is enjoying the idea that Mitt Romney will protect the fat cats whilst ignoring the plight of middle class and poor Americans. Mitt Romney would be a nightmare at best for America’s working class. Middle class and poor folks need to vote in record numbers to keep a Romney scourge from blighting America’s middle class and poor with an unemployment epidemic.

At this point I would vote for the president of Exxon/Mobile to run this country over what Obama is doing.

If I have to explain this comment then no matter what I say would still not make you understand or agree. Your leftist mentality is just too fixed on the propaganda and brain washing perpetuated by the Obama Nation.

It is a sad thing when oil spills and animals are lost. But accidents happen in every aspect of life.

Propaganda - just listen to everything about the Health Care plan coming out of the left wing. It's ALL lies with hints of hope and truths. I know because I read the entire bill. Or how about the whole "Birth Control" issue that they blew out of proportion stating that the GOP did not allow Fluke to speak on women's rights. When in fact the whole thing was not about women's rights at all, it was about whether or not Obama had the constitutional right to force insurance companies and employers to pay for it. Also, Fluke was never scheduled to speak at it.

These are but two, I can easily go on for hours but I won't. Simply do some of your own research other than listen to left wing media. And by the way, I don't watch FOX.

I hope he does have ties to the oil industry. When he gets sworn in in January, President Romney can utilize his contacts to get the country moving in the right direction and get the drilling underway.

"It aims to counter a $3.6 million ad campaign launched last week by the American Energy Alliance that blames Obama for rising gas prices and criticizes his decision to delay the Keystone XL pipeline project."

The American Energy Alliance is nothing more than an empty bag of wind. The decision to delay the Keystone XL pipeline was, and always has been, because of a decision made by the State of Nebraska, not the President. Apparently Transcanada, who will make tons of money by pumping sludge to the Gulf simply to be refined then shipped off to China (yes folks China...not US pumps or Canadian pumps) has a new corridor selected, but won't yet release it. http://bit.ly/HF90AU

Presidents cannot "control" gas prices, and the right knows that because their friends control gas prices.........Presidents don't.........on either side of the aisle. The Wrong/Wing however understands, that their base, which is misinformed, and plain uninformed will virtually believe anything so long as it's against this President for obvious reasons they can deny until they are blue in the face, but can't escape, and the majority of voting age Americans know it. So, ultimately, you agree with that approach, or you don't, and you believe the lies, or you don't, and you won't agree with the blatant lies/bs the GOP expects you to swallow in the face of huge amounts of evidence to the contrary.

You are correct! And he was wrong when he used gas prices as a political tool as those who are trying to do it now are equally wrong. The difference I see is that while Obama made of big deal of gas prices going up during Bush's watch, the same as the GOP is doing to him now, Obama never suggested Bush controls gas prices (though his friends certainly do) as I'm hearing from lots of folks in the GOP now who know full well that is a lie. There are steps the President can take and that's the extent of it. It's all about "politricks" and yes, Obama himself was guilty of using that trick. Agreed, though not to the same extent where he's out and out lying about it.

You do realize that the majority of Republican voters are over the age of 30? That mean they have been a round awhile to know what is actually going on. I was a Democrat up until I was 35 and then I woke up. I am still not a Republican but at this time in our political history I side with the GOP over the Democrats on nearly every topic save a hand few.

There are more lies and propaganda coming out of the white house then all the GOP House and Senate combined, not even adding in the Senate and House Democrats. And don't get me started with media outlets.

They know what's going on? There is no evidence to supporte that assertion. Conversely it is clear they don't know what's going on, and you apparently belong with that group, which is massively delusional in my view. The mere fact that you claim there are more lies and propaganda coming our of the white house than both GOP houses of congress tells me you are even more out of touch with reality than your eventual Presidential nominee. Good luck with that. I've been around long enough to know that it is a waste of good energy and valuable time to argue with people who think this way and are essentially zombies. So, we'll have at it in the voting booth.

Nah, not hardly. Latest Gallup Poll shows Obama 11 pts better right now and Quinnipac Poll show 10 pts better. Can anyone even imagine Mitt Robme in a debate with Obama? The numbers will continue to grow. He already is down by 25% with women's votes and even more with minority's. Gas is what it was when it reached the high under YOUR boy GW. Unemployment keeps going down, Wall St up..Should be an even bigger landslide than it was against McCain and the Empress of Alaska..But nice try

Now try to take your fingers out of your ears. Obama has nothing to do with rising oil prices. All oil goes to the World Market for pricing. That pricing is done by OPEC and wall street speculators. There is NOTHING the white house can do about it.

Those policies were put in place by Saint Reagan and followed through by all Republican Administrations afterwards.

Deep sea oil costs $35. a barrel to retrieve and refine. The rest is pure profit for the companies.
Land drilling costs $23. a barrel to retrieve and refine. The rest is pure profit for the companies.

anything over that is governed by OPEC and wall street speculators.

Got that....... Are you listening......... Hello .......... "crickets".
