Rick Snyder Recall: Group Starts Process Against Michigan Governor Again

Posted: 04/ 2/2012 1:19 pm Updated: 04/ 2/2012 9:57 pm

For the second time in two years a group of Michigan activists is launching a recall drive against Gov. Rick Snyder (R).

With a reworded recall petition focused on actions Snyder has taken rather than actions Snyder is projected to take, the group Michigan Rising believes they can double the amount of signatures they received last year and force a recall referendum in November. The group is focusing the bulk of its attention on Snyder's decision to sign "emergency manager" legislation allowing the state to take control of local governments and his budget plans.

"Things have gotten worse," Michigan Rising spokesman Bruce Fealk told The Huffington Post.

The language submitted to Washtenaw County election officials specifically cites Snyder's education, tax and local government policies. The petition claims that Snyder has hurt school children by taking $400 million out of the state school fund, which caused students to be placed in over crowded classrooms, and notes his cutting of the state's food stamp program. It also says that Snyder has ousted elected officials with the emergency manager law and raised taxes on the poor and middle class, while cutting taxes on the wealthy and corporations.

"He is robbing from the poor to pay the rich," Fealk said. "It is Robin Hood in reverse."

The group also describes Snyder in a press release as a "corporate monster" who has failed to create jobs.

Snyder's press office did not immediately return a request for comment.

During last year's recall effort, Snyder spokeswoman Sara Wurfel told Hartland Patch that the governor's fiscal policies were helping Michigan.

"Our comment on this would be regardless of recall efforts or not, the governor remains fully committed to making the tough decisions that ensure Michigan turns the corner and sees brighter, stronger days for all," Wurfel told Hartland Patch in an email. "He's hopeful that Michiganders will realize and witness that firsthand over time and that his approach of relentless positive action will make a difference."

County election officials will be holding a hearing on the petition on April 9 and Snyder will have 10 days to appeal the decision if the petition is approved. Michigan Rising has to gather 807,000 signatures from Michigan voters during a 90-day window within a 180-day period following the certification of their original request. Last year, the group obtained 500,000 signatures. Fealk said that the group is aiming to collect between 1.1 and 1.2 million signatures.

If the signature drive is successful, a recall referendum will occur in November. If Snyder is then recalled, Lt. Gov. Brian Calley (R) would become acting governor until a special election that would be held in February 2013 to fill the remainder of Snyder's term.

Fealk said that Michigan Rising is in the process of recruiting volunteers, noting that the group had 6,000 volunteers last year. He said the group is not coordinating with state Democrats on the recall. The group is planning a May 5 rally in front of the state capitol in Lansing to kick off the effort.

Snyder would be only the fourth governor to face a recall election if the petitions were approved. In addition to the recall pending against Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R), to be decided in June, California Gov. Gray Davis (D) was recalled in 2003 and North Dakota Gov. Lynn Frazier (R) was recalled in 1921. Former Arizona Gov. Evan Mecham (R) had a recall election certified against him in 1988, but Mecham was impeached before the recall could occur. There is also a movement pending in Arizona to force a recall election against Gov. Jan Brewer (R).

UPDATE: 9:55 p.m. -- A spokesman for Gov. Snyder, Ken Silfven, said that the governor is focused on state business and believes he can weather any recall attempt. He said Snyder stands by his record in Lansing. "People put their trust in the governor because he'd make the tough but necessary decisions to move Michigan forward," Silfven told HuffPost. "We'll stay focused on doing what's right for Michigan and it's families."

CORRECTION: This article has been corrected to reflect that were Gov. Rick Snyder to be recalled, Lt. Gov. Brian Calley would become Michigan's acting governor until a special election that would be held in February 2013 to fill the remainder of Snyder's term.

if we get another Granholm, its goodbye michigan forever.

He has only had one year. Why not give him time and maybe he will help the state. After all, the same people who want him out gave our last governor 8 years to screw things up. I wish people would stop playing politics and really want the best for their cities, states and country.

If you really are interested in following our constitution and you don't want a dictator then you should be very interested in getting President Obama out.
02:24 PM on 04/06/2012
Hooray Michigan!
Mr. Snyder is probably one of the Koch brothers boys from ALEC, because
he definitely is against people's rights.
Where do the Koch brothers get these guys? Here it's facism at it's best
by putting in people who will support anything you say or do,and
going after voting rights is so far out, the people in Michigan should
contact Wisconsin to find out the best way to get rid of this
puppet of the corporations, because repeal is going to be the
most used word this coming year.
If a state doesn't have a repeal law, it will adopt one as soon
as they vote these beauties out that have a connection to
Koch and the ALEC group.

They get them from tea party type toadies and those who support Isreal even if it means US going to war.

We really all have to realize that it is easier and cheaper to pay attention to our politics the first time so we don't have to do the recall efforts!
02:27 PM on 04/06/2012
Absolutely true. Anyone who has a connection to an organization
like ALEC is off base, and that's the second thing we should
look for in a candidate. First being if they can read. Anyone
who signs a law must know how to read. (LOL)

this nation is still reeling from the devastation to our economy from the bush admin and the 6 years the GOP held all three branchs...people this is all about revenues, if the business's were still in the US that were here when bush took office none of this would be an issue. 50,000 factories closed and left the US for China while bush was in office and Rob Portman helped facilitate it. Not to mention the 75,000 jobs we were losing before he left office. Failed republican policies and corruption had us just where they wanted us, bankrupt so they could attack the social programs (republican strategy the two christmas's) and whine about the very deficits they created...almost all of our problems revolve around revenues and the fact that most American corp's are paying little or nothing, loss of jobs and business's, tax cuts for millionaires and billiionaires, unfunded medicare part D, two wars off the books, voodoo economics = severe loss of revenues...so blame the dems or Obama all you want, the facts reflect otherwise as do 30 years of failed republican policies.
02:32 PM on 04/06/2012
Follow the corporations leaving ALEC, and it's a worst scandal
about Corporate USA, than we imagined. It is huge!
Any newspaperman worth their salt would investigate
what was behind the takeover of America that is making
big corporations getting away from it ongoing today.

Add Michigan to the list of states with buyers remorse for electing a republican...I have to wonder, when will people wake up? when are they going to realize if you dont make a million a year or more, if your just a working class person the republicans are aligned against you, they laugh behind your backs and cannot believe your dumb enough to vote for them...wake up in 2012 and get the repubs out the house!!!
02:38 PM on 04/06/2012
Add a few Dems to that as well because they have special
interests, too, or else why have they become millionaires
whle in office on the salary they get??
The Republicans were taken over by the corporations,
but they never realized they were supporting a
takeover of the government as well, including
throwing their party down into the sewer.
Which is why absolute power does corrupt
absolutely, and this is a great example of that.

I'm in as a Recall Snyder 2.0 volunteer leader. We have learned many lessons from the 2011 unsuccessful recall attempt and will not fail this time to collect the needed signatures. The people from top to bottom of Michiganrising.org are highly organized, experienced, skilled and dedicated activists. Snyder's disapproval ratings and the political angst among Michiganders has increased significantly since last year and the timing is about as good as it gets for throwing this tinhorn dictator out of office. Go to the website, sign up to be a volunteer and participate vigorously as much as you can for the duration of this vital process.

Ho Ho, Snyder's got to go! ASAP!

You are a Democrat and that's why you are trying to recall the Republican Governor. Be Honest with your motives and stop fooling yourself, your family and everyone around you. This is just an attack on Republican elected officials who the unions and the Democrats are unhappy with. Wake up and realize the US is a center-right country. NOT a Center-Left.

No, heres your trouble, I wont disagree that were a center right middle of the road nation, I believe the vast majority of us want the same things, trouble with your story is that the republican party is now the party of radical extremists and the democrats are the moderates just as Obama is. They have just gone to far to the right and are no longer electable. They are not trying to work with the other side, they ran on one thing, got into office and are now doing another. Not to mention the ridicoulous republican primary has turned people off because they are going so far to the right...not to mention their attacks on women and womens rights. You cant go around making women, independants and minorities mad and expect to win elections and 2012 will show you that. And honestly, what makes you believe that a silver spoon fed, spoilt rich brat with a 100 Million in an IRA has anything, anything whatsoever in common with 99% of us??? can you say, unelectable, disconnected, delusional....

Snyder’s improvement was even more dramatic, going from 38% approval in September to 50%, while those who disapprove of the job the governor is doing fell from 46% to 36%.

-Why are you making this comment?

"Snyder's disapproval ratings and the political angst among Michiganders has increased significantly since last year"???

His approval ratings have gone up from last year.

I still can't believe this can happen in America. I can believe that it's GOP governors who talk smaller govt. when they actually don't want this state to have a say in govt. Wow! just wow!

How can they defend this? What happened to democracy?
10:02 PM on 04/05/2012
Watch state tv an the immediate call has stopped democrats from having a fair vote on the floor. If a democrat wants to get time on the floor. Immediate call removes them from speaking and the repubs can install any law immediately without 2/3 votes. The repubs are running the state like an autocracy an he has abused power beyond belief. Read the statue on Michigan immediate call an then ask why out of the 500 bills signed into law only 20 were in the normal democratic process laid out in the Michigan constitution? You really need to do your homework

Greed is a poor substitute for intelligence!
12:27 PM on 04/03/2012
Ok. Being Fair to Conservatives let me get this straight. You want to take away entitlements that primarily help elderly people who help build this country but didn't have time or money to get educated because they were making a living or were hurt defending YOU in war or on the street. Because you BELIEVE those entitlements are ALL going to lazy WELFARE QUEENS that get pregnant to make more welfare BUT YOUR AGAINST CONTRACEPTION THAT WOULD REDUCE THIS AND ABORTION THAT ALSO WOULD REDUCE THIS TO PROTECT A LIFE THAT YOU WANT TO SEE SUFFER IN THE STREET OR GO TO JAIL. Does any of this seem a little *ss backwards. Please explain. Seriously
09:16 PM on 04/03/2012
I'm happy to explain how I feel about what you posted. I'm conservative but can't say I speak for all conservatives.

No one wants to take away benefits from the elderly. They lived their life according to the promises that we're made to them and for reasons you pointed out. That Notion that Repubs want to take that Away is a scare tactic / lie that Dems put forward to make you think that they care about you and that Repubs don't. It sounds like you bought into that one hook, line and sinker.

There are plenty of what you coined, "welfare queens". The local Lansing paper did an article on one of these women with two children who didn't know what she was going to do now because she was cut off of welfare after 13 years with no job and a few college credits. BTW, the two kids were from different men and neither were in the picture.

The left likes to reward bad Behavior and punish good behavior. If someone is responsible and either abstains from sex or uses contraception, they wouldn't need to be bailed out by taxpayers paying for their abortions. Dems like to paint these irresponsible people as victims. It works pretty well for buying votes.

Also, I don't judge whether someone should be born or not because their parents are losers. That should be up to them, if they get the chance to live.

I hope that helps!

I do not agree with your way of thinking but I have to admit you are one of the few Republicans who have an articulate and intelligent response that isn't saturated in FOX propaganda. The parts that are, unfortunately, are where you and I part ways. Thank you for respectful opinion and i am pleased to disagree with somebody with that view that speaks with a brain. Sincerely Thanks
