Last week, we got the chance to chat with designer Tommy Hilfiger about his best-and worst-dressed days, from sharp loafers and button-downs to ugly Christmas sweaters and fur coats. "My look is classic with a twist. Sometimes it's influenced by my love for music and rock, but sometimes it's a little bit more grown-up when I'm in business meetings and I have to wear a suit and a tie." Though he's known for being one of the most dapper men in the fashion industry, Tommy admitted that this was not always the case. "My biggest fashion regret was when I wore bell-bottoms and had long hair down to my shoulders in the '70's," he revealed. He continued, "I don't think I'll pick up that fashion trend again."
Though he may have his own style regrets throughout the years, Tommy Hilfiger (the brand and the man) is an iconic name that has become synonymous with chic American Prep. And at 61, even after a few bad outfits back in the day, Tommy is a young-at-heart soul who's got a look and lifestyle coveted by millions around the world.
In addition to having one of the most ubiquitous names in fashion, Hilfiger recently took a job as resident image consultant on "American Idol." And upon hearing that he would be receiving the CFDA's Lifetime Achievement award, Tommy told us that his first thought was, "isn't this supposed to be given to someone like, 75 plus?" He continued, "I was shocked, but completely and totally honored."
