A pint-sized 8-year-old girl may not look like your typical hero -- but after Samantha Kelley from Puyallup, Wash., saved her best friend's life with the Heimlich maneuver, that's exactly what people are calling her, KING 5 News reports.
The two girls were playing at Kelley's home when her friend began choking on a tangerine slice.
"I had just grabbed a movie for us to watch and I made her laugh with one of my jokes," Kelley said.
As her friend began gasping for air, Kelley -- though alarmed -- kept her wits about her and jumped into action. She administered the life-saving technique and within seconds, the danger was averted.
Kelley was honored with an award for courage at her elementary school and the little girl has been teaching everyone she knows how to do it.
"Anyone can learn it -- even 4-year-olds," Kelley said.
Last month,WXII 12 reported that a 6-year-old kindergartener saved his friend's life with the Heimlich maneuver -- showing yet again that big heroes can come in tiny packages.
