David Axelrod: Mitt Romney 'Oblivious To The Experiences Of Everyday People' (VIDEO)

Posted: Updated:

Top Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod slammed GOP presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney Tuesday, accusing him of being unaware of everyday Americans' concerns and being stuck in the decade of AMC's "Mad Men."

"In his basic orientation toward these economic issues, he seems to be oblivious to the experiences of everyday people," Axelrod told Charlie Rose on CBS' "This Morning."

Axelrod later said, "Romney seems to look at the world through the rearview mirror. I mean, he wants to go back to the policies of the last decade on economics. And on other stuff, he says Russia's our greatest foe, he thinks employers ought to be able to decide if women should be able to get contraception coverage or not, any employer. If we drill for oil, that will solve our energy problem, no higher fuel efficiency."

"I think he must watch 'Mad Men' and think it's the evening news. He's just in a time warp," he added, referring to the popular television drama about an ad agency in the 1960s.

"Mad Men" dinged Romney's father, the former governor of Michigan, in its Sunday night episode. The show had Henry Francis, a staffer to the New York governor, saying he wouldn't let his boss go to Michigan "because Romney is a clown and I don't want him standing next to him." Romney's son, Tagg, tweeted in response: "Seriously, lib media mocking my dead grandpa?"

Eric Fehrnstrom, a top Romney adviser, took issue with Axelrod's comments and the two sparred on Twitter:

Eric Fehrnstrom
says Romney living in "time warp." You mean, when unemployment was lower, and the economy was expanding?

David Axelrod
No, when Russia was our greatest foe, bosses could dictate on women's health & Etch-a-Sketch was a toy, not a political strategy.

Eric Fehrnstrom
axelrod Actually, the toy that comes to mind on Obama and the economy is the Rubik's cube. He's got it all twisted around
