Morris Claiborne Wonderlic Test Score: LSU Cornerback Scores A 4

Greg Gabriel, National Football Post

A report earlier today stated that LSU cornerback Mo Claiborne scored a 4 on the Wonderlic test at the Combine. When a player scores that low it's an obvious red flag and clubs have to do their research on the player. Personally, I feel the league should find out who leaked the score and fire the individual. There are some things that should be kept private and this is one of them. Let's look at the process.

I for one feel the Wonderlic is obsolete when it comes to testing for intelligence in the NFL. It’s not because the test isn't good, it's because the use of THAT test is no longer valid. The people from Wonderlic will tell you that the test is a good indicator of intelligence when it is taken ONE time under PROPER testing conditions. The NFL has been using this test for over 30 years. Prospects usually take the test as juniors on their testing day for Combine scouts in the spring of their junior year. The scores are distributed to all the clubs later that spring. If the prospect has taken the test, he is not supposed to take it again until he goes to the Combine. The problem is that while the prospect is at a training center preparing for the Combine, he takes a version of the test sometimes 4-5 times a week for up to 6 weeks. This makes the result of the test totally invalid when taken at the Combine. I have seen instances where a prospect's test score has jumped by as much as 20 points at the Combine and only because he has taken it so many times. The Wonderlic people will tell you that a jump by any more than 4 points is invalid.

Now knowing what I just wrote, let's look at the Claiborne situation.

When Claiborne came out of high school, the schools that recruited him knew he had a learning disability. I don't know much about his disability other than it has to do with reading. Everyone I have talked to tells me that Claiborne has great character and is a great kid. He knows and understands his disability and uses all the resources that LSU has available to control it and to help him get by in the classroom. When it comes to football he puts in extra time to learn and understand his assignments and it is not a problem. Will he need reps? Probably, but no more than the usual rookie would need. In saying that, Claiborne's test score was NOT a true indicator of his intelligence. He can and does learn.

Claiborne is expected to be drafted in the top 5 of this month's NFL Draft. What I suspect happened is a club drafting after 5 leaked the test score to try and scare off teams in the top 5 from drafting Claiborne. The clubs have known the results of these scores for weeks. If they had any questions about a player's ability to learn they have had plenty of time to do their research to feel if they are comfortable with drafting Claiborne. The team leaking the score is hoping that the public backlash for drafting a player with such a low score will scare them off. Unfortunately, this is dirty pool but it often happens this time of year in the NFL. Just remember, if you start to hear a lot of negative things about some highly rated players in the next few weeks, it’s because a team who drafts later in the round wants the player to drop so they can have an opportunity to select him.

He sounds like a top 5 pick to me. He is fast, works hard and stays out of trouble. What more can you ask for in an athlete. This guy will beat all the odds and be a success in life.

We d*mn these guys for being dumb and d*mn for getting help. He can't win. Whoever leaked this information should be ashamed of themselves. All in the name of making a buck. Never mind the feelings of this young man. But what should I expect from a league that treats people like playthings*.

*they start a lock-out to protest the deal that THEY made with the players. As soon as the lock-out is over, they have an abbreviated pre-season and a full season. Soon after lots of players are getting hurt because they shortened the practice time. But we are asked to not notice all the hamstrings, ACL and other muscle related injuries. All so that they could get in a full season ($).

I find it curious that this so-called confidential test always has a few leaked results each year.

How about I mock the public high school and state-college that passed him along?

They didn't pass him along. If they had he would have failed in college since his learning disabilities and help needed to succeed in school would have not been identified.

I think you're just another person who actually has no clue what teachers actually do for the most part and would rather see them teach to tests instead of teach kids not only knowledge needed to succeed but also how to learn.

I suggest you need some help learning how to learn about things instead of just listening to right wing talking heads who have caused the problems with our school systems by forcing them to be underfunded and staffed by continually cutting budgets that allow schools and children to succeed.

Two things to remember. Dan Marino didn't exactly ace his test. Hall of famer.

Second and more important is who leaked this test score and is Goodell going to fine and suspend those involved? My guess is that it was a team hoping to tank Claibornes draft position a few spots so they could draft him.

Don't be a hypocritical Goodell, do your job on this one too.

So what if the dude is not a rocket scientist! George Bush wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer and WE elected him as president. So how snart are we? Not to mention he will make millions while the rest of us smucks pay through the nose to watch the game. I applaud the guy for having ambition and doing what he loves. As for the person who leaked his information, they should be fired and banned from ever participating in NFL or college sports again.

Well, I hope you are there for him after football when those football skills aren't there to help him make wise investments, understand finance, and find himself a job when he is done by 26. You'll have more money than him five years after he is let loose from football is my guess, like most other football players after their careers are done.

Bah, he'll still be taken first round, but you just know the ball clubs eyes have lit up now because they'll use it against him in his contract negotiations by pointing out the "risk" of his potential to pick up the professional system. It seems if anyone should be upset by all this, it should be the folks picked after him because depending on where he goes, the scale generally slides downwards in pay.

Of course incentives can make up for some losses and if Clairborne turns out to be as good as he was in college you can best believe he's going to make whoever gets him, pay when contract renewal comes around.

The players are "slotted" these days by their draft position. The only way this has a negative impact on his income is if it affects his draft position. If he got the score he did because of a learning disability anyone with any sense is going to discount it anyway.

Renz, he is. He also has a learning disability. He's worked hard to perform well enough in school to stay eligible. He's a young man being slandered for no good reason and you're a bandwagoner with your statement. Shameful of you.
11:28 PM on 07/24/2012
His learning disability may be that HE CAN'T READ. If he is dyslexic, perhaps he can get some therapy with his new found millions; if it is something else, he better have VERY trusted advisers, because otherwise, after a short career in the NFL, he's got limited prospects. If he got through all of schooling without having reading skills, then people have failed him. He may use any of his available skills to succeed, being a football player, but after that? Where will all the people be that said, "hey, he's a good kid"? He'll be broke, the NFL will forget him as will the fans. If he had a disability, a true one, maybe he should become a sponsor for helping out other kids with similar disabilities, and parlay that into a legacy. Sadly, though, I think the undisclosed disability is simply not knowing how to read. Anyone heard anything different?

Whatever his real or not real disability is, he still needs to be careful because it is likely that without a LOT of positive help, he'll be another poor ex-NFL football player when his talent runs out.

If you can't score well on the Wonderlic, you have a lot of other issues to deal with after you get out of the cozy nest of professional sports. It's not a guarantee of success or failure, but it does indicate some potential hazards.

Let's see if this conversation proves me wrong in a few years.

Learning disability or not, the Wonderlic test is super easy...

Example question:
8. When rope is selling at $.10 a foot, how many feet can you buy for sixty cents?

A 4 out of 50 would be a major red flag for me if I'm an organization about to hand over millions of dollars to a kid. Its all elementary school level math and grammar.

Well I'll tell you what.... I'm 47 I have Epilepsy and I'm still slow with a learning disorder because of my Brain Damage.... When I was 9 months old I had a fever of 106* and that's what damaged my brain.... And also what brought my Seizures on to my Epilepsy.... But in all things in my life, there was one area that I topped everybody in my family having 3 brothers.... Sports!! A lot of people will start going against this young man because of his slow learning disability.... Let them because someone will pick him up and see just how strong he is.... With that Extra he has to put in already, he'll put it and the results will be shown.... HOW?

Who in all of NCAA College today at this 2012 NFL Draft is the #1 CB to be drafted in the NFL? How did he get there over all these other boys.... He had the problem at all other times in college and topped them each....

Praise LSU for giving this young man a chance to get his Education even with a learning disorder & Play Football that no other college would....

Reading this I can tell you right now you'd score at least in the teens. This "he did everything he could in the classroom is BS". I bet this guy didn't write a single paper or take a single test himself his entire collegiate career.

Amen

"I mean, I looked on the test and wasn't nothing on the test that came with football, so I pretty much blew the test off," Claiborne said.
