Philippine Pit Bulls In Dogfighting Ring To Be Put Down

Pitbulls Dogfighting

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Veterinarians and animal welfare workers Tuesday euthanized at least nine pit bulls rescued from a dogfighting ring in the Philippines because there are no facilities to rehabilitate them and prevent them from again being used in underground arenas.

The plan is to put down dozens of the roughly 300 dogs rescued in separate raids late Friday in Laguna province south of Manlia, said Anna Cabrera of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society. Seventeen had been put to sleep a day after the raids.

The health of the living dogs and the progress of rehabilitating them will determine how many of them ultimately survive.

Police arrested eight South Koreans suspected of running an illegal online gambling operations in which players outside the Philippines bet on dogs fighting at a clandestine compound.

Some of the dogs rescued Friday have been saved from a similar facility in nearby Cavite province in December, Cabrera said. She said the dogs were "recycled" — adopted by people who sold them back to the suspects to continue fighting.

"That is a fate worse than death," she said.

Two of the suspects arrested last week had been apprehended in the December raid but had posted bail, police Chief Inspector Renante Galang said.

Welfare society veterinarian Wilford Almora said many of the pit bulls — purebred and mixed breeds — suffered horrible wounds, including ripped ears and tongues, in previous fights.

He said his group had enough drugs to euthanize 70 dogs, and had put down at least nine Tuesday afternoon with 13 more planned before they finish later in the evening.

He said they selected the most sick, emaciated and aggressive animals to put down first. Some of the dogs were too weak to stand, he said.

He said they were taking time to carefully assess each dog before finally deciding which ones to put to down.

"We are not in a hurry. We just want to make sure that the ones we put to sleep are the ones that deserve to be put to sleep based on their medical condition," he said.

Cabrera said it was not possible to care for all the pit bulls that were rescued and it would be irresponsible to give away for adoption the animals that have not properly healed.

The dogs had been kept in metal fuel drums and tied to heavy steel chains inside a 2-hectare (5-acre) coffee plantation surrounded by a fence made of corrugated tin in San Pablo city in Laguna. Police recovered 30 dogs from an arena in the nearby town of Calauan where they were about to fight, Almora said.

The eight suspects face charges of illegal gambling and cruelty to animals.

The San Pablo city prosecutor has not yet completed a preliminary investigation to determine if evidence is strong enough for a court case. In the meantime, Galang said police will turn them over to immigration officials.

If convicted of illegal gambling, they face a maximum of 12 years in prison. The charge of animal cruelty carries a penalty of up to two years, but no one has served time in the Philippines for the crime. A student recently found guilty of killing a cat received a few months of community service.

Dogfighting is not common in the Philippines and the fights were broadcast mostly outside the country.

as always, it is the most innocent who pay the highest price for the most worthless examples of the human race.

may they rot in the hottest fires of he** for all eternity, and many these poor dogs finally find the peace that was denied them in life.  god help the survivors.

Community service for this? These are violent people who love violence as long as they're not the ones suffering. The laws have not caught up to the inhumanity here. While it's not the same as hurting a person, they should do some time when animals are killed and treated so terribly. What short horrible lives these animals had, all because we don't address this issue in even western countries.

an eye for an eye is what is warranted in cases like this.

Hows about we rehab the dogs that can be rehabed, and put down the trainers and owners? I, for one, would not have any problem with that.

My thought exactly!

I agree 100%, somethings nore drastic need to be made into law that willhand down harher punishment for the cruelity of the animals.
People make these dogs mean all for the sake of $$$$, I love dogs and have a friend that own pit bull from the Gotti family and he is very mild mannered an loves to just chillout and take walks.
The laws need to be mandated that all arrested and convicted serve no less than 6months in jail w/ no release until $5000 as been paid toward an animal shelter of the courts decision.
That slap on the wrist just because of it being an animal doesn't make their pain and suffering any less than pain and suffering afflicted upon people.
I HATE all who abuse animals and the sad things is, most will still show love (wag their tails) at the very human abusing them

They are euthanized the wrong animals.................

Unfortunately, these dogs cannot be re-trained, and cannot ever be kept with other dogs or, for that matter, any pets at all. As far as I am concerned, the breed (pit bulls) should be allowed to go extinct. Miami animal control will put down any pit bulls they capture, they are just too dangerous to keep, all trhey know is killing, and Dade county has a lot of them due to a large Cuban population.
01:44 PM on 04/04/2012
You are very ignorant and clearly do not know this breed. They are amazing. My entire family has pitbulls and they are sweet, loving, beautiful animals and love children and I personally, have never crossed an agressive one and that's saying a lot considering I've worked in animal rescue for many years.....and we are not Cuban...sounds like you have more issues than just with dogs. Anyway, Miami and actually most of the state of Florida is cruel when it comes to animals and pitbulls in particular. I recently took the 2000 mile trek to Florida to rescue a pit, which I decided to keep because he is the most wonderful dog I've ever met. I cannot even imagine him being put down, which a few months ago was in his future. You and so many others, really need to open you eyes, minds and hearts and learn to accept everyone, pitbulls and Cubans included. Also, a fun fact for you...The breed of dog that most often bite: Golden Retriever. Who woulda thought? :)

Time after time I hear what you are saying and it is always after a pit bull has torn off the face of someone or killed a child. The truth is that if the breed didn't exist we would soon not miss it. FAR too many people keep them BECAUSE of their aggressive reputation whether deserved or not and that you can't deny.I don't deny that some of them are friendly and never harm anyone but the fact is the potential is ALWAYS there and one way to negate it is to be rid of the breed. You can learn to love another less aggressive breed if your concern is truly the health of the animal.

one country's pet is another country's livestock, people love some animals and consider others pests or varmints to be exterminated. they kill dogs by the thousands every day in this country because nobody wants them. there's no consistancy and it's all based on emotion.

They are at least humanely euthanized in most states. Dogfighting is a horrible life for a dog and the people in it are just plain sick and sadistic. These people are often candidates for the serial killer trifecta.

There should be a fund that holds all the fines from people that commit abuse against animals. Every dog licensing fee should go into that fund and every Michael Vick should have to pay into that fund. There needs to be money to care for animals that can't be socialized after we humans breed them and use them for wrong purposes.
People spend so much money on their pets--I wish everyone would remember to support those organization that help the dogs that aren't social.
I say thank you to Turtle Gardens for taking my adopted dog that couldn't be socialized.

That's a good idea. I'm on board.

Those dogs didn't go to Pit-Bull-School on their own.

Why should they die because of stupid humans ?

I say the Bio-Medical Labs with them to be experimented on and let some of the animals out to happy homes.
11:00 AM on 04/04/2012
They should be put down, they are a danger to humans. This dog should have never been bred and now we have to deal with the fact that they will always be dangerous.
12:20 PM on 04/04/2012
These dogs are very sweet. They think they are lap dogs. My nephew raised them. They are taught by horrible people to kill. Any dog can be made to be nasty. A friend who worked at a shelter said the meanest dog they had was a standard poodle. It had been taught to be a killer. They had to put it down.
01:19 PM on 04/04/2012
The problem is that every generation of these dogs get more and more of the bad genes from the dogs trained by these idiots. They are not all bad. My buddy has a nice one but I still keep my distance. There are bad dogs of all breeds.

It's a combination of nature and nurture and pit bulls have a bad rap precisely because they are trained to fight by sick humans. Like I said, the serial killer trifecta.
10:20 AM on 04/04/2012
Why do we let people who kill other people live? Then when in jail they get so called help and are able to be moved back into society. They are far more likely to kill again and be more of a danger to society than dogs.
10:19 AM on 04/04/2012
That is so messed up! I've know quite a few people from there and they just have no regard for animal welfare. Its part of the culture and when I talk to them about it (they are my friends) they just have no opinion and don't really care. They think they are just animals for their benefit and amusement. I don't agree, but I understand them at little better. I don't think that is a plus though. The cousins of the friends I have actually got arrested for eating peoples pets. That was really messed up.

I say that before the dogs get put down that they should put down the despicable scum that were using them as fighting dogs first. This is incredibly sad because these dogs did not have a chance at a normal life. There are no bad dogs, just bad dog owners. Now, because these dogs cannot be rehabilitated they have to be put down. A terrible tragedy. All dogs want is love and if they get it they return that love and affection a thousand times over. That could have been the life for these dogs if only they hadn't fallen into the hands of these lowlifes. What a shame.

Anytime people who use dogs for fighting purposes....should be taken out and just shot in each limb methodically, slowly, not to kill yet just to maim.......then after awhile the final shot.
