Sandra Fluke Speaks On Rush Limbaugh, Women's Issues And Her Next Steps

Posted: 04/ 3/2012 8:31 am Updated: 04/ 3/2012 5:53 pm

Sandra Fluke Wcf

Rush Limbaugh's personal attacks on Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke's character may have taken the nation aback, but Fluke says she wasn't shocked by much of what the talk show host had to say about her.

"Perhaps I am a cynic, because [Limbaugh's] attacks were not that surprising to me," Fluke told a small audience of New York movers and shakers at an intimate dinner following a gala event for the Women's Campaign Fund to benefit female politicians and their causes. "They were outrageous, obviously, but we've seen this [sort of tactic] before. This is an old trick out of the old boys' playbook, to try to silence women."

What Fluke was surprised by, however, was how Limbaugh's remarks seemed to touch a particularly sensitive nerve for so many women -- and men -- across the country.

"I almost felt that the groundswell of support for me was more surprising," Fluke said, noting the numerous messages of support she's received in recent weeks. "I'm so grateful that Americans proved me wrong on that one, and reacted so supportively in those moments."

Support may be in abundance for Fluke these days, but sleep certainly isn't. Fluke is, on some level, living something of a double life at the moment -- attending galas, lectures, and political events on the side while attempting to maintain her studies at Georgetown.

The evening before accepting last night's first-ever "Name It. Change It." award recognizing her advocacy, she said she was up all night scrambling to finish a class paper -- a quintessentially collegiate move, and one perhaps refreshingly normal to hear from a woman whose boyfriend, Adam Mutterperl, characterized recent events as "a bit surreal."

But as the outcry over Limbaugh's remarks cools and the Affordable Care Act winds its way through the Supreme Court, Fluke says she hopes to shine the media's spotlight on other women's legislation in the works right now.

"One thing I'm very concerned about is the Violence Against Women act," Fluke told The Huffington Post after receiving the award.

The Act, which passed initially in 1994 and is currently up for re-authorization, has received pushback from some members of the Senate because the newest version provides domestic violence support for gays, lesbians, Native Americans and illegal immigrants.

"This has been landmark bipartisan legislation since 1994 ... this year it's having problems in Congress that it never faced before," Fluke said. "Violence against women should not be something that any of us are having any trouble agreeing about."

While Fluke continues to follow the legislation that matters to her, right now she says her main focus is finishing law school. Asked repeatedly if she might have a future in political office, Fluke admitted she is "talking to a number of people right now about some exciting job opportunities."

But according to Fluke, finding fame in her next step isn't nearly as important as advancing the causes she cares about. "I'm just looking for ways to talk about these policies that matter to me, and that matter to women," Fluke said. "I'm just trying to make something positive out of this unfortunate situation."

Well, I'm glad SOMEBODY is keeping this issue alive because obviously the liberal/progressive community seems to have lost interest in continuing to keep up the pressure on RL.............For that matter, we don't hear much from liberals and progressives about TV sonograms anymore either.................It seems once the initial shock dissipates they figure they've won the battle and can sit back down, when  Read More...

This woman, just like all of us, has a slanted perspective on the world of health care. She says that she is fighting for equal rights for women and others who do not have access to health care.

Would that include the 50'ish woman who has too many assets to qualify for Medicaid, and is struggling to pay the $600 per month health insurance premium. Oh yes... if she was "poor", had several children that she could not afford, she would be completely subsidized by the government for her (and her children's) health care.

If you are an advocate for those who do not have equal access to health care (at the same price), then you must advocate for the right wing working group also who have to make choices as to whether to pay the rent/mortgage or get medical care.

Or... is "equal access" simply a code phrase for... FREE healthcare for certain groups at the expense of others.

John, are you really trying to state that no "conservative" women or Xtians get abortions? Because, that is just crazy talk. More than 50% of abortions performed are on those who call themselves "Christian." And I have MANY MANY stories of the anti-choice crowd going to get themselves an abortion. What do you think about that? Are you thinking? Or just parroting the new hate radio line that libs hate women because they get abortions? Your response should tell me whether it is the former or latter.

"A 21 year old woman and her mother drove three hours to come to their appointment for an abortion. They were surprised to find the clinic a 'nice' place with friendly, personable staff. While going over contraceptive options, they shared that they were Pro-Life and disagreed with abortion, but that the patient could not afford to raise a child right now. Also, she wouldn't need contraception since she wasn't going to have sex until she got married, because of her religious beliefs. Rather than argue with them, I saw this as an opportunity for dialogue, and in the end, my hope was that I had planted a 'healing seed' to help resolve the conflict between their beliefs and their realities." Women account for 25% of the victims of violence. Men account for 75%

And yet we have special laws protecting women?

Why?

Does anyone else hear a wee, Rushite voice in the wind?

Please don't feed the trolls.

It only makes them hungrier, and does not expand their knowledge or ability to post logically.

"I am just curious, as you seem to be intelligent, why you are so hung up on Maher? I am not being sarcastic, and I understand the frustration I would feel if I went onto a known conservative website, and no one would acknowledge my frustration with Rush. Serious question, do you know him personally."

I understand your comment and I get it. I don't know him. My frustration began months before Rush Limbaugh called Ms. Fluke an "S"...Back when Mr. Maher called Gov. Palin a "C" word...Liberals said nothing...Mr. Maher called her a "T" word. ..Liberals did nothing...Mr. Maher makes jokes about Palin's child while Obama declares children off limits...Again Liberals said nothing...Mr. Maher trashed Mr. Santorum's children....Again are kids off limits or not? But that doesn't apply to conservative women does it.

BTW I'm sure the folks at the "pro Rush" web sites would be very rude to you, unless you enjoy it, you wouldn't get anywhere.

“You do know that the "enemy" is a group of people and not a nation, right? So, how do you declare war against a group of people who blend in with the citizenry of all nations? Perhaps a look at our own history and our revolt against England would give us some ideas. Was it Thomas Payne who said that the pen is mightier than the sword? You don't win minds and hearts by yelling loudly and making threats. You win with basic human respect instead of blanket condemnations."

Tell that to Iran. They are currently building a nuclear bomb. Oh, they also said something about wiping Israel off of the map...Or drive the Jews into the Sea...Something kinda like that un-friendly language.

“I'm perfectly OK with you making a f00I of yourself.”

You make my point. Everyday that you defend Bill Maher is a day that you're ok with calling a woman a "C" word. That's fine. Soon the "C" will be used quite often to describe liberal women as well. I'm guessing you won't find that offensive. That says something.

“give it a rest...that's not what i said."

Has Maher apologized yet? No, well when he does, I'll give it a rest. Till then, restock the pond, ONLY 6 of you on this web site will admit that what Maher said was vile and disgusting. But for some reason. he's still a hero in the minds of liberals. Hmm...

Does anyone else see how ridiculous it is to see someone that has the priviledge to go to a Catholic College nagging for birth control coverage? It's ridiculous to expect a Catholic College to cover your birth control. Get over it.

What a long strange trip it's been
02:03 PM on 04/05/2012
What's ridiculous is your lack of awareness of the issues. Bet you didn't know that janitors at the same Catholic university already have birth control coverage. What do you say now?
04:06 PM on 04/05/2012
I'm not sure why the janitors would have birth control coverage unless they are hired through an outside company. To expect Catholic institutions to cover birth control, to force them to do so, is to hinder what our country prides itself on, freedom. Freedom of religion is more important than making sure Fluke has birth control.

Are you stating that only the underprivileged are allowed to advocate for a change in policy?

As for the other:
http://georgetownvoice.com/2012/02/23/gu-law-student-denied-testimony-on-contraception/

LSRJ (Law Students for Reproductive Justice) has been lobbying the Georgetown administration for several years to start covering birth control in its student health plans. THE UNIVERSITY ALREADY OFFERS SEVERAL HEALTH PLANS THAT COVER CONTRACEPTION FOR UNIVERSITY EMPLOYEES.Over the past year, LSRJ had meetings with the University at which they presented their view of how the policy was affecting students. Invoking the D.C. Human Rights Act, LSRJ demanded that the University change its policy. The issue reached the Office of the President last year, which upheld the policy.
04:13 PM on 04/05/2012
No, I'm not implying that "only the underpriviledged are allowed to advocate for a change in policy," I'm saying that if Ms Fluke needs birth control coverage, why did she decide to go to a Catholic College? She should have known that birth control would not be offered there. Instead of realizing this and accepting that birth control is against the Catholic religion, she goes to congress about it? Perhaps if she went to a Jewish college she might whine over there being no pork in the cafeteria. This disregard and disrespect for Catholic belief is yet another sickening attempt to secularize our Catholic institutions.

This guy's had four wives and chased all four away. Just thinking about women and men having sex throws him into a violent tantrum yelling all kinds of hateful things about women and calling them all kinds of dirty names but then he wants young college girls to send him videos of them having sex? Does anybody else see anything wrong here?

So, let's get a discussion going where the words "15 minutes of fame", "change the channel" and "Rush is still on" are not a part of a post. Just wondering what conservatives might be interested in offering as an argument, without bringing Ms. Fluke's newly acquired public image into it, asking us to change the channel, or laboring about the point that RL is still on the air (as Seinfeld said" you don't push a coke machine over on the first try"...

Lengthy threads on Obama and Israel are "off topic". There are other, more appropriate boards for those postings.
"GOP and Necons" are posting "off topic" on any board they can from Entertainment to Latino Voices.
Asking them to stay "on topic" on a specific board is NOT "censorship".

A peek int that alternate future where Limbugh's rant caused Sandra Fluke to disengage from public discourse:

Public discourse!??? HA, say that again! Please!!!!!

So for the GOP wonks and their ilk have sat like old frogs in their bog -rotting on their 900 CE lilly pad ------defining women's fate and outcome-----without them!! That is called tyranny ------and you call it public discourse-------or for her to stop - talking as 100% women in the USA have been silenced!!

Now again we have the GOP ilk and Zealot- one in the same blowing up clinics, shooting DR's and using violence to get their way - and you call that discoarse - beating up women - outright and socially!?

I like the great Nation of Israel ---who now makes women sit on the back of the bus from their zealots---Read the LAT on that!! Men, Zealot men think as Stalin-----------

Truth comes at the end of a long Gun!!

Why are you attacking Nazztea? He is simply pointing out that a particular poster wants to discuss something other than what this thread is intended for. If I want my hair done, I don't go to the car wash, (maybe I should) and if I need my pants shortened I don't bring them to the butcher. Nazztea is pointing out that there are many blogs and sites on HP within which to address other issues. I am not judging the serious of those issues, just saying that in order to have a somewhat orderly discourse we can't be flying all over the map. There are too many problems to name in the world, I prefer to tackle each independently, although they do bleed into each other in certain instances, however, I don't believe this fits the template.
