Anthony Lee, Ring Masters: From Janitor To Co-Owner

Posted: 04/ 4/2012 7:36 am Updated: 04/ 6/2012 1:37 am

Anthony Lee had some ideas for what he wanted to do when he got out of the Army in 1999. Being a janitor was not one of them. He planned to go to college and maybe study accounting, but when his then-girlfriend, now-wife got pregnant, Lee needed a job fast. He gained factory experience working for a steel manufacturer before getting laid off, and after six months of job hunting, the only position he could find was as a janitor for another manufacturing company, Eaton Corp., based in Massillon, Ohio.

Within four years, Lee rose from janitor to supervisor of the department that makes retaining rings. But layoffs were rampant, not only at Eaton, but throughout the manufacturing-based town. When the company decided to sell the retaining rings department, Lee realized he was in danger of losing his job again. This time, he took drastic action. He spent nights at the library, researching how to write a business plan for so he could buy Eaton's ring division. The plan caught the interest of investors, who had one caveat before buying the division: They wanted Lee as co-owner of the company they named Ring Masters.

What was your first job at Eaton Corp. like?

My first job was as a laborer. Basically, I cleaned the bathrooms, swept up, mopped, picked up cigarette butts -- I was a janitor. But being a union shop, whenever a job opened up, you could bid on it based on seniority. I was probably a laborer for six to eight months before a job opened in the ring room.

What was your mindset working as a janitor?

I never really got discouraged. It wasn't what I planned for myself, but with a baby on the way, I didn't really care as long as I was earning some money to survive and for my child. I didn't get down. I knew another job would open up.

What gave you the idea, as an employee, to buy the company?

The company changed ownership three times in four years. The last owners decided to close the plant down, but the ring room was a profitable division and still had a strong customer base, so they were going to try to sell it. I had been supervisor for several years and knew the operation from front to back. I had to give the tours of the ring room to outside buyers and show them the equipment and the product. After the first group left, I came back to my office and sat down, realized they could just buy the equipment and I'd be out of a job. That's when I said, "Maybe I could do this." I had no idea where to start, but decided to put something together.

So you'd go to the library every day after work to research how to write a business plan?

I worked really long days, until 7:30 to 8, and that would give me an hour, so I'd shoot to the library. I'd just sit there and read and take notes. I was trying to familiarize myself with these business terms. It took a long time before the things I was reading made any sense to me. I'd always ask questions to people in the industry and look around on the Internet. And the next day I'd do it all over again. It was a long process -- about six to eight months.

And what was your intention with the business plan?

I was very naive. I thought I'd put a business plan together and be able to go to a bank and ask for a loan. But after the business plan was complete, I took it to an M&A attorney. He never had an employee approach him about trying to buy a company. He introduced me to local investors, who were friends of his, and at one point, we were having dinner at a restaurant, and they said, "We've looked at your plan and we're willing to go forward with this and would like you to be an equal participant." I was very glad. That hadn't crossed my mind. I didn't think I would have enough money to participate.

What you needed to be a co-owner was $25,000. How did you raise that money?

I had a very nice motorcycle I used to ride around on the weekends -- I sold that. I had a couple of accounts here and there that I cashed out. I actually rolled up some change. I don't have a lot of money, so that $25,000 was a stretch for me.

Moving up from janitor to co-owner is a huge leap, but why do you consider this just a stepping stone?

I feel very blessed. It's been a great learning experience, which has actually motivated me to do it again. I feel strongly about the manufacturing base in our country. I think we can get back to where we were years ago, before everyone decided to start offshoring. I'd like to attempt to do this again. My goal is to make Ring Masters a 100-year success, and to apply what I learned to even more companies and put people back to work manufacturing American-made products.

Well that all sounds good but he didn't do anything extra on his own. He drove to work on a hiway that the goverment built, flushed his toilet into a treatment plant the goverment furnished. If he is successful he will be demonized by the administration and made to hire worthless personell and furnish insurance. If he is really successful and becomes part of the 1%, well I won't even go there.

He didn't do that Obama did it.

This is the same type of person that liberals hate, especially when they make it up to the top with those kind of earnings. They don't even stop to think about how it all started, like this guy, they just "assume" that they got there crookedly and it was just handed to them, that they are just screwing everybody over right and left and are greedy bastards. They don't think about how that person may have actually gotten to where they are at, by hard work, determination and loyalty.
They are automatically punished for being successful by our leader character and all the followers bash them and say they already have enough money they should give it all to us and be taxed out the wazoo for having more than us.
I find it odd that these type of stories that encourage others to do the same, the great American Dream, but yet support Obama and his ideas which are totally opposite of this.

According to the left, he didn't succeed by himself. Somehow, the government helped him. There must have been a government guy right there studying with him in the library. Another government guy encouraging him to buy the company. I'm sure. But of course, as soon as he became co-owner, he became evil, greedy, and beyond redemption. Not willing to pay his fair share, etc. Unless he supports President Obama, then he is a "good" 1%'er as opposed to the rest of the evil 1%. At least that's how they tell it.

Exactly right!!
The double standard is appalling.  I sometimes become so bewildered at the hypocrisy and ideas they spew out that all I can do is just laugh.
Their belief is that anyone who gets to that point where this guy got to, had to have done it illegally, crookedly, deceptively, dishonestly or it was just handed to them on a silver platter, or they think they just are somehow "luckier" than anyone else.  Amazing the mindset of these losers.

The Prez probably wishes the Repubs would pass his small biz tax breaks and related legislation, so he could help him even more. BUT, the Repubs are hell bent to make sure that DOESN'T happen! Then blame the Prez for his (biz guy) and others struggles. Diabolical, aren't they?

This is what I call good old American determination and ingenuity. It just goes to prove where there's a will, there's a way. Kudos. See what can be accomplished the old fashion way, by hard work, something I find lacking in most these days. Greedy? I don't think so. This is a success story and I love it.

One thing not mentioned are the Venture Capital people that took a chance on him and his plan. Have to give them a little credit. I give him a lot of credit for his determination to make it work, Kudos to him.

He's NOT a 1%er. Small biz, his personal income is probably waaaaaaaaay under 200K annually. Plus, he's interested in making and keeping jobs in America, not off shoring. He's the type the Dem plans would help tremendously, but the Repubs have blocked them.
12:06 PM on 07/27/2012
His company is a multi million dollar one.  I too am a small business owner, of a much smaller business than this gentleman's.  Make all the assumptions you want, but dems have not helped my small business by adding new taxes on medical devices that I must pay, for one.
12:28 PM on 07/27/2012
Dems are destroying this guy. Can't get enough loans. Will have to buy insurance for obamacare. Reg's that handcuff the small business. obama will not let small business grow they are a threat to his government take over.

Why? If anything, he should be pissed off at the Repubs for holding him back.
07:34 AM on 07/27/2012
He didn't get there on his own. Someone built that library and the chair you sat in and the road you drove on and the car you drive. ETC
12:40 PM on 07/27/2012
And the mop he used and the bucket and the broom and the dust rags and the shoes he wore and the food he ate. Nope....... no way did this guy get there on his own.
Seems to me obama made a speech to some people and in that speech, he said that he and Michelle came from poor families and they worked very hard to get where they are today, they scratched for every free college course they could get.
They worked day and night watching Bill Ayers write his books. He never did give old Billy boy credit for that.
08:32 AM on 04/29/2012
Great story, Now that's what I consider a small business, unlike the Republicans who consider a company with 500 employees a small business and should get breaks accordingly!
You should be thankful we have a president that even recognizes these types of companies, the last one cared only for the top controllers!

Those numbers are set by the SBA. you can go to sba.gov. for this info, and it tells who qualifies.

I hope obama don't read huff Puff, or Lee is finished. obama will throw a ring around his ring business. Lee you are going to have to pony up as biden says, you are a 1%.
I did not read where Lee ask obama for one penny. How in the world did Lee become sucessful without the obama government? Wow a small business creating jobs. Without obamas help.

You don't even know what the heck a 1%er is do ya? Plus, the Repubs are holding this guy back, as they won't allow the Dem plans for small biz through Congress. Then they blame the Dems for the biz struggles. BUT, there are those of us who aren't quite that stupid, aren't there?

See, all you whiners who complain you can't find a job? It can be done - all it takes is hard work, a willingness to do a job that you consider beneath you, and the self-determination to do whatever it is you have to do in order to get ahead. Anthony Lee and the other entrepreneurs in these articles are truly inspirations.

He's more like the rare student who winds up playing in the NBA, making big bucks (and I don't think this fellah is making all that much). What are the odds? You can work hard all you want, but if the right circumstances don't happen (such as Bill Gates and IBM) at the right place at the right time, you simply go on as a commoner.

I said nothing about becoming wealthy, ronruthnik. All I was pointing out was that taking any job, even if you consider it beneath you, is preferable to whining about not being able to get a job. If Anthony Lee thought that being a janitor was beneath him, he wouldn't have taken the job and there would probably be no article about him. And what do you mean by "commoner?" That is a designation used by wealthy landowners, aristocrats, royalty, plutocrats - those who think that for reasons of birth or wealth that they are better than anyone else. Are you one of them?
