Darrell Issa's Labor Website Infuriates Unions

Darrell Issa

WASHINGTON -- Union activists generally don't consider House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) to be an ally in labor struggles, so many were surprised Wednesday morning to see that Issa's GOP-led committee had launched a new website to promote workers' rights.

Upon closer inspection, however, labor activists came to see what they considered a distinct anti-union flavor of the website, ProtectingOurWorkers.com. Pitched as a platform to listen "directly to rank-and-file union workers," the site includes three stories told in workers' own words, and all of the workers are critical of their own unions: the National Education Association (NEA), the United Auto Workers and the Service Employees International Union.

The site was apparently built off of a February oversight hearing on required union dues -- a pet peeve of many anti-union conservatives, who claim the money is used for left-leaning political ends.

"Every worker should have the choice to decide whether their money is taken from their paychecks and used to fund political activity," Issa said in a statement Wednesday. The purpose of the site, he added, is to illuminate "how forced political contributions violate [workers'] fundamental rights" and to hold "union leaders and government accountable to taxpayers."

The AFL-CIO had a different take on the site. Alison Omens, director of media outreach at the union federation, said in a statement that the site is "nothing more than lipstick on a pig -- a poor attempt to shroud [Issa's] corporate political agenda as support for working people. No one is buying his politics of the 1 percent no matter how he tries to sell it and as committee chairman he should be ashamed."

In response to the AFL-CIO, House committee spokesman Seamus Kraft said in an email, "It's no surprise that the AFL-CIO is so defensive about accountability and transparency in how it spends its members' hard-earned dues. An organization that purports to defend the rights of workers should support the rights of rank-and-file union members to know and decide how their dues money is spent."

On Wednesday Issa sent letters to the leaders of several unions, as well as Lafe Solomon, acting general counsel of the National Labor Relations Board, asking that they answer his questions on union dues issues and hand over documentation supporting their answers.

Issa's activity on Twitter didn't endear him to the labor community, either. Starting early Wednesday morning, Issa put out a flurry of tweets harping on union dues -- and in many of those tweets he used the "union solidarity" hashtag, #1u, which is commonly used by labor activists as they knock the likes of Issa. In one Issa tweet, for example, he asked his 38,000 followers, "Are you a #union worker facing forced political contributions? Speak out at ProtectingOurWorkers.com #1u #solidarity #labor."

Union activists and others fired back on Twitter. WePartyPatriots, a pro-union website, tweeted, "Fraudulent, anti-union extremist @DarrellIssa now using the #1u hashtag. That's like @KingJames playing in a Cavs jersey for Miami."

You need to research the history of unions. How a person in the U.S. does not understand the struggles and deaths that have brought us to today are because of union members boggles my mind. The TRUTH is in our history. The benefits in the workplace are because of the union members. Our history shows that corporations are for profit and power giving only what is demanded through the unionization of the workers...and then only after dying for them. Dissing a union member is as abhorrent as disrespect for our military men and women. While you sit back and criticize, you enjoy the freedoms and those benefits. Shame on you.

"Dissing a union member is as abhorrent as disrespect for our military men and women."

I just checked, and this was judged the most over the top statement in the history of the internet.

Issa hates Unions which is why he is trying very hard to take down the U.S. Postal Service. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that he has ties to the companies who think they can take over the business that the USPS does. A big conflict of interest, which is something that he has been found guilty of before.

are you a corporate employee or stockholder whose company is using funds to support a political candidate/party that you don't? Please elaborate....
08:39 PM on 04/10/2012
One big difference in the case of a stockholder, you don't have to invest. Many states like WI etc., you don't have a choice and are forced to pay dues and they are taken out before you even get your check. It's like the mob taking their taste.

I consider an employee that will cry about union dues while enjoying the benefits his fellow workers fight for ...lazy and asking for a handout.

There is a way to stop this bad behavior by Darrell Issa. Elect independent Dick Eiden to congress. The primary on June 5th is "open", meaning anyone can vote for Dick, no matter what party they are affiliated with. Badabing badaboom.

I would wonder about the legality of issa putting up an anti union website. This would be using gov time and money to campaign against unions ( imo ). Of course to find out the legality would entail an investigation of issa on his self so I wonder what the decision would be ?

Since Issa is head of the Oversight Committee on Government Reform..doubt any committee meetings and interviews will be brought forth in Congress.

Every investigation he's done so far have soured on him ( especially when something repubie shows uo ). He already dropped the Solydra thing and said nothing legally or politically was violated !  Imagine that . The man has wasted tons of our money with his political grandstanding and now he's getting funky with Holder. A repubie investigation bounces all over to find anything to pin on a Dem--witness the Clinton inves which started with Whitewater, went on to a suicide and ended up with Monica.

"This would be using gov time and money to campaign against unions ( imo )."

You do realize both parties campaign for and/or against any issues they want while in office, right? In fact, that's what they get elected by their respective constituents to do....represent their interests on issues. Obviously, it is the interests of those that vote for them.

Way to go ISSA, if there is such union solidarity then the unions will ahve no problem being transparent and collecting money for political activites voluntarily. 100% behind you on this one ISSA.

Mr Issa,
Why do you hate American working people so much?
An American worker
06:42 AM on 04/15/2012
Issa doesn't hate American working people. He hates the idea that workers are forced to contribute to bosses who only support one political party. Is that SIMPLE enough for you?

The Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 (FECA) prohibits certain individuals and groups from making contributions to or expenditures on candidates for federal office. Corporations and labor unions may not directly contribute or USE CORPORATE or LABOR organization RESOURCES/FEES or to engage in fundraising activities in connection with any federal election. However, they are permitted to establish a "separate segregated fund" (also know as political action committees or PACS), for which they may solicit and collect voluntary personal donations for a federal political campaign or party. PACs must register with the Federal Election Commission and file periodic financial reports. FECA prohibits employers from requiring employees to contribute to a federal political campaign.

Why doesn't Congressman Isaa want to hear from investors on Corporations that infuse politicians like himself with corporate campaign donations and funding of SuperPacs. I don't want my money from my 401k thrown into politics. I want it invested! Where are you on that Mr. Issa?

Should a person have to join the union? Should the company take out union dues without the individual approval? Should there be a way for union member to decide where thier force money is donated to? I believe there should be unions if employes want them. But employes should not be forced into unions. Unions are big business. Freedom of choice is a right that every employe should have. Unions are taking that right away from employee. Do not take employees rights away.

You should read up on unions.
07:37 AM on 04/05/2012
Then do you believe on the other hand that non union shops should always allow their employees to vote in union representation every year? Isn't that within the rights of employees? Since they are not allowed to do this now.
