Guenter Grass, German Nobel Winner, Criticizes Israel Over Iran Tensions

By JUERGEN BAETZ 04/ 4/12 01:25 PM ET AP

BERLIN — German Nobel literature laureate Guenter Grass labeled Israel a threat to "already fragile world peace" in a poem published Wednesday that drew sharp rebukes at home and from Israel.

In the poem titled "What must be said," published in German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung and Italy's La Repubblica among others, Grass criticized what he described as Western hypocrisy over Israel's own suspected nuclear program amid speculation that it might engage in military action against Iran to stop it building a suspected atomic bomb.

The 84-year-old Grass said he had been prompted to put pen to paper by Berlin's recent decision to sell Israel a submarine able to "send all-destroying warheads where the existence of a single nuclear bomb is unproven."

"The nuclear power Israel is endangering the already fragile world peace," he wrote. His poem specifically criticized Israel's "claim to the right of a first strike" against Iran.

Grass also called for "unhindered and permanent control of Israel's nuclear capability and Iran's atomic facilities through an international body."

Israel views Iran as a threat to its existence, citing among other things some Iranian calls for its destruction and fears that Iran aims to produce nuclear weapons.

Grass didn't mention those calls, which have been made by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but obliquely referred to the Iranian people being "subjugated by a loudmouth."

Israel is widely believed to have an arsenal of nuclear weapons but has never admitted it, pursuing instead an official policy of "ambiguity" to deter potential attackers.

Israel currently has three Dolphin submarines from Germany – one half-funded and two entirely funded by Berlin – two more are currently under construction, and the contract for a sixth submarine was signed last month.

Dolphin-class submarines can carry nuclear-tipped missiles, but there's no evidence Israel has armed them with such weapons.

The West sees Iran's nuclear program as designed to develop an atomic bomb, but Tehran denies the charge, saying an expansion of its enrichment program is meant only to provide nuclear fuel.

Grass said he long kept silent on Israel's own nuclear program because his country committed "crimes that are without comparison," but he has come to see that silence as a "burdensome lie and a coercion" whose disregard carries a punishment – "the verdict 'anti-Semitism' is commonly used."

The left-leaning Grass established himself as a leading literary figure with "The Tin Drum," published in 1959, and won the Nobel Prize in 1999. He urged fellow Germans to confront their painful Nazi history in the decades after World War II.

However, his image suffered a bruising when he admitted in his 2006 autobiography that he was drafted into the Waffen-SS, the combat arm of the Nazis' paramilitary organization, in the final months of World War II.

Grass' comments swiftly drew sharp criticism Wednesday.

"What must also be said is that Israel is the world's only nation whose right to exist is publicly questioned," the Israeli Embassy in Germany said in a statement. "We want to live in peace with our neighbors in the region."

"Guenter Grass is turning the situation upside-down by defending a brutal regime that not only disregards but openly violates international agreements for many years," said Deidre Berger, director of the American Jewish Committee in Berlin.

"Iran is the threat for world peace – and Israel the only democracy in the entire region, and at the same time the world's only whose right to exist is openly questioned," said Charlotte Knobloch, a former leader of Germany's Jewish community.

Efraim Zuroff, who leads the Nazi-hunting Simon Wiesenthal Center in Jerusalem, called Grass' poem "outrageous," adding it appeared to be a sign of Israel "becoming the whipping boy for the frustrations of those who are sick of hearing about the Holocaust."

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is a staunch ally of Israel, and her spokesman reacted coolly to Grass' remarks.

"There is artistic freedom in Germany, and there thankfully also is the freedom of the government not to have to comment on every artistic production," Steffen Seibert said.

The head of the German Parliament's foreign affairs committee – lawmaker Ruprecht Polenz, a member of Merkel's Christian Democrats – told the daily Mitteldeutsche Zeitung that Grass is a great author "but he always has difficulties when he speak about politics and mostly gets it wrong."

"The country that worries us is Iran," he was quoted as saying, adding that "his poem distracts attention from that."

Grass' assistant Hilke Ohsoling told German news agency dapd Wednesday that the author won't explain or defend his poem, nor does he plan to comment on the reactions in the near future because of health issues.

Here is Gunter Grass's poem:

Why in the world would something like this be controversial is beyond me. He is calling for peace and understanding, and not blindly marching towards war. Should we all to follow the unwritten commandment "thou shalt not criticize Israel or its leaders for anything" ?

Liberals just can't understand that Iran is building a nuclear bomb to "wipe Israel off of the map" & "Drive the Jews into the Sea"

As far as Gunter Grass...A Nazi by any other name, they don't smell as sweet.

The extent of blatant anti-Semitism displayed on this website I once respected disturbs me. Let me say I am unashamedly Jewish, and I am fiercely opposed to many of the Israeli governments policies. Having said that, let me clarify some points being misrepresented on this "news" site.

1. Israel was not founded by force. Israel was peacefully founded by the United Nations and was immediately attacked by its neighbors in 1948.

2. While the continued Israeli settlement activity in Palestinian territory is wrong and unlawful, in my view at least, Palestinians chose to leave Israel. Israel did not force the Palestinian people out, they willfully chose to leave rather than live side by side with Jews in a new Jewish state.

3. Israel has been attacked and invaded by every single one of its neighbors. Every. Single. One. While founded in peace, Israel has had to adjust to the reality of living in the Middle East, an area very hostile to Jews, by becoming more and more bellicose and belligerent. I deplore this development, but like every other nation Israel has a right to defend itself. When a state is continuously invaded over a period of decades, it will naturally shift to more militaristic policies in order to defend itself and its people.

1. Remember the Nakba....?

"Nakba means "Catastrophe" in Arabic. It refers to the destruction of Palestinian society in 1948 when more than 700,000 Palestinians fled or were forced into exile by Israeli troops."

Undeniable history...your whole premise is based on a lie....That being "Israel was not founded by force".

you can't "re-write- history - the arabs were promised a return to Israel when all the Jews had been killed by the invading arab armies - which didn't happen
If you want to blame someone - blame the arabs

Your account sounds like you read it from an Iranian textbook. Palestinians left on their own accord Israel had nothing to do with it. Next time you quote a source make sure it is reputable, not some bogus website.
11:15 AM on 04/09/2012
Actually Israel was founded by force (search for Irgun). UN had nothing to do with founding of Israel, but member states of UN recognized it and admitted it to the UN. It did force many palestinians out, and gave a short period of time to many who were scared of being massacred to come back (read this in the memoir of Moshe Dayan) All wars against its neighbors were initiated by Israel except 1973 yom kippur war. The 1973 war was due to the fact Israel ignored peace overtures by Egypt's Sadat in 1972 and refused to consider returning of the territories occupied in 1967. Israel has never been attacked by Lebanon, but was invaded twice by Israel. The last one lasted for 18 years. These are undeniable historical facts.

There is a new book by Peter Beinart, "The Crisis of Zionism", it is a decent book in describing how his views are changing.
07:32 PM on 04/09/2012
The Irgun had no part in the foundation of Israel. They were not adopted into the government like mossad. I dont need to google search it to know that. Maybe you should read some reputable books before you make posts instead of the Internet. And 67, the seven day war, how did Israel start that one? Again, read a book. I like how you give an explanation for why Egypt attacked on yom kipper, but again it's still an unprovoked war. Israel was asked by the Lebanese gov to invade the first time as bashir was assisinated, read about it. And whether or not you agree with Israel invading lebanon the second time they invaded because a terrorist group runs the country and was launching rockets and kid aping raids along Israel's borders. We can disagree on Israel, but we will not have a productive talk until you educate yourself on the subject. Stop buying into anti-Semitic propaganda.
07:39 PM on 04/09/2012
And I almost forgot, Israel was founded by a United Nations resolution. Honestly why don't you do some research before you post
06:36 AM on 04/07/2012
Finding the Likud program reprovable and demanding accountability makes you into an antisemite? This is more Israeli chicanery and neurosis. This is very good for Netanyahu who build his entire career feeding on antisemitism.

Since he lives in democratic Germany and not in mullah's Iran, Guenter Grass is of course entitled to his opinion -- and entitled to express it in artistic form. Just like other extreme left anarchists -- see Noam Chomsky for instance.

What smacks of desperation, however, is the haters' reactionto the opinions of such celebrities. Of course, there's a small detail that escapes them: that while both individuals are extremely talented in their own domain (Grass in literature, Chomsky in linguistics), they are just as unqualified to comment on international politics as the hot-dog seller at the corner of my street. So cool down, boys!
06:53 PM on 04/07/2012
So, Grass it entitled to spout his irrational, partisan view of Iran's refusal to comply with IAEA and UNSC resolutions, but those who disagree with him must keep quiet?
That's a strange notion of freedom of speech.

I think you misread what I wrote. Grass can and should be criticised. In addition, his opinions in international politics are worthless.

Constant and unrelenting repetitive propaganda:

"Iran" threatens to wipe Israel off the map. False. Achmadinejad quoted the Ayatollah Khomeini to the effect that the regime occupying Jerusalem would vanish from the pages of history. Predicting the disappearance of a regime hardly augurs "War of the Worlds" type destruction.

Iran has a nuclear weapons program. False. There is no evidence of that whatsoever, and the US and Israeli intelligence communities have acknowledged that. Iran is a signatory to the Non-proliferation Treaty and is in compliance with the IAEA inspection protocols.

Israel is not a signatory, and has a clandestine arsenal of hundreds of nuclear weapons.

The real reason that Israel wants a war fought against Iran is that it represents a curb to Israeli hegemony in the region. Israel is a kleptocracy that must continue its thievery- especially of the water and resources of its neighbors- to survive. All the triumphal crowing about what a "success" it is is just so much moonshine. If and unless Israel makes peace with its neighbors and accords full property and political rights to its subject population, its position will remain tenuous and fragile, and it will continue to be a pariah.

History will judge the placement of the settler colony in the Levant as a disaster for the world at large.
From an unecessary sense of guilt, imposed upon them by a mendacious internationalist press and allied propaganda, the nations of the world were coerced and cajoled into allowing this injustice to occur- against the better judgement of quite a few sagacious statesmen who knew better- and now the price could be that of plunging the globe into the third and final world war. The very idea that the US would support Israel if and when it chose to attack Iran- a clear case of absolutely criminal aggression- should show how corrupt our government and especially our congress, have become.

Some relevant facts when pondering Israel's situation in a very hostile neighbourhood:
Israel: 8019 sq mi Pop: 7,000,000
Iran: 636,372 sq mi Pop: 78,000,000
Arab League: 5,148,048 sq mi Pop: 349,870,608

Kinda puts things into perspective. And that's just for starters. When you're a very, very tiny little nation that's vastly outnumbered by neighbours who find your very existence "blasphemous," you have to be smarter and stronger in any way you can if you're to survive. If Israel has a nuclear deterrent, it's been quite judicious in how it maintains it and refrains from deploying it....not even in the dark days of 1967 or 1973.

The modern state of Israel was established where it had historically stood. If they wanted to pick a site for its ideal conditions they would have picked something larger, in a better neighborhood, preferably with natural resources like oil!

"...But now that my own country,

brought in time after time

for questioning about its own crimes,

profound and beyond compare,

is said to be the departure point,

(on what is merely business,

though easily declared an act of reparation)

for yet another submarine equipped

to transport nuclear warheads

to Israel, where not a single atom bomb

has yet been proved to exist..."

If German built and paid nuclear crying submarines are given to Israelis for holocaust reparation/ compensation and they in turned go and commit a holocaust of their own against Iran, then, Guenter Grass has right to speak up against Germans involvement.
01:32 AM on 04/06/2012
There should be no more apologies, no more excuses, no more guilt mongering, and no more reparations. WWII is over; Eastern Europe was awarded to the Soviet slave masters, Western Europe was subjected to Anglo-American hegemony. The American people were given an oligarchy overseeing a military-industrial complex, and most of the rest of the world got IMF debt slavery and usury. Palestine was occupied, expropriated, and ethnically cleansed, all to prop up a false and totally mendacious myth of unique victimhood and global guilt. Enough!
