'Hunger Games' Sequel May Be Delayed By Tense Contract Negotiations

Hunger Games
Contract talks with "Hunger Games" director Gary Ross are reportedly creating tension for Lionsgate in the wake of key executives' departure.

For a studio that is celebrating its $363 million-and-counting hit "The Hunger Games," Lionsgate seems to be in an awkward spot.

"Hunger Games" screenwriter-director Gary Ross is pricing himself above what the studio wants to pay for the blockbuster's sequel, "Catching Fire," and tensions could delay a hoped-for fall shoot date, The Hollywood Reporter wrote Wednesday. The second installment is scheduled for a Nov. 22, 2013 release.

Lionsgate and the director didn't even begin negotiations until just three weeks before "The Hunger Games" opening, when the teen-targeted film about reality TV style death matches appeared to be a sure-fire smash, the trade daily said. It added that Ross has yet to revise the script for the sequel, from the second book of Suzanne Collins' "Hunger Games" trilogy.

Ross has some bargaining power. For a relatively cheap $3 million salary (plus a reported 5 percent of profits), he delivered one of Hollywood's most cost-efficient hits in recent memory, finishing under-budget at $78 million, departing Lionsgate executive Joe Drake told The Huffington Post in an earlier story.

Word of sputtering negotiations comes amid continued silence over the departure of key Lionsgate executives behind "The Hunger Games." Drake, the motion picture president and co-COO of the studio, shepherded the project from inception to fruition, along with production president Alli Shearmur. (Former Disney big Nina Jacobson brought the project and a reasonably priced book deal to Lionsgate.)

The Lionsgate honchos have apparently been replaced by executives from Summit, the "Twilight"-birthing studio that Lionsgate purchased for $412 million in January.

It remains unclear whether Drake was flat-out fired, walked away a winner of his own accord, or a combination of both as he reportedly negotiates his farewell.

Neither Drake nor Shearmur would consent to an interview, a studio spokeswoman told HuffPost.

Hollywood is a funny place. On Wall Street, executives can lose billions and still get multimillion dollar bonuses. But in show business, the brains behind a potential billion-dollar series can be shown the door.

Vulture had a sharp take on Lionsgate's predicament: Either the studio felt the executives were expendable (not likely) or their exits were a condition of the merger, which will result in more cash flow as a result of Lionsgate now able to profit on another "Twilight" film. Lots of nuance to either possibility, including recent flops by both studios.

It;s not like the screenwriter did a bang-up job with Hunger Games. If you are someone who has read the book(s), I guess the movie makes sense. For those of us who didn't read the series, this movie offers way too little explanation. I'm not convinced the reading the books would really make this future world believable, but the movie is very thin on character development.

Maybe I shouldn't expect good science fiction from a teen love triangle, Twilight wannabee, trilogy. It's just that this movie has been so hyped up, I expected the author might have written a more rational set-up.

The Capitol fears another revolt by the districts, and needs them to produce for it's needs. Somehow it was decided to piss off a large section of that population by killing off tributes as young as 12. Additionally, why would the Capitol care how many times someone was entered in the reaping? It makes no sense from the Capitol's stand point to give out extra food rations in exchange for increasing someones chances of being selected. In fact, making it more likely that poor, undernourished tributes are selected seems to make for a worse spectacle.

I cannot believe I am the only one who found the fuzzy, can't see beyond the actor in a scene, shot distracting. I kept expecting someone to show up, behind Catniss or whoever else had the head, and shot do something. Took away from whatever the actor was trying to do, IMO. Give us the whole picture, please.

And, Lionsgate, I beg you, do NOT go 3D for future movies. I will not go see them if you do.

I took my 12 year old to see the movie. I hated it I admit I have not read the book but I was so disappointed. The kid enjoyed the book so maybe it was for her.

What's surprising to me is that Lionsgate locked the actors in for all three films, but didn't do the same for the director. I think Gary Ross got a pretty good deal the first time around with the 5% profit participation. www.thelettersproject.org

So the library in my town thought it would be cute to host a Hunger Games themed event for the kids..ages 6-12. There were shooting games and more shooting games and hide and seek games and some more shooting games. Because The Hunger Games is really approrpiate for 1st through 7th grade kids, I guess.

The library where I work also held a Hunger Games party. The one shooting style game involved a marshmallow gun shot at a target, but it was not as popular as the pinata or the Cornucopia game where kids chose an item and every time the item came up in the story they got points. The points were redeemed for prizes like posters and other things. It was geared for the teens, and most of those attending were in middle school. Many of the 7th graders had read the book in class.

I did enjoy the book, but probably won't read the sequels. I think that making it into a series is perhaps a commercial decision ( establishing a brand and stretching out the income earning potential of the "product") which is too bad, as the book would have risen to another level if it had addressed and resolved the issues it raises and/or alludes to. Not doing so didn't have the effect of making me hunger for the next book, but instead had the effect of disappointing me.

The concept of the book owes so much to a short story entitled The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, that I wouldn't have read it at all, except that it was free for my kindle from amazon.

I won't see the movie, because I can tell from the few ads I've seen that it won't really be convincing. The lead is obviously well-fed and extremely healthy, which she shouldn't be. If it had been produced by the Brits, I bet it would have some real teeth to it...

They should find someone other than Gary to shoot it. Maybe then the second movie will be better than the first.
10:13 AM on 04/06/2012
They should just get a new one. I am a HUGE fan of the books. I think the movie missed the mark. I went in with expectations to be disapointed, and I was. They completely strayed from the entire point of the book They barely made an effort to show how the people were starving and the greed of the capitol. That was the ENTIRE message of the book. Instead, they made the book about the actual Hunger Games and tried to turn it into a teenage love story like Twilight.

I also thought the acting was sub par. I like the actors and I think that under different direction, the second movie could make up for all the first was lacking.

Can the second movie please have more character development? Once they stop fighting and start working on it of course.
