Marion Barry Wins Ward 8 Nomination While 'Twaggin'

Marion Barry 'Twags' Post-Victory Firestorm

WASHINGTON -- In what was a fairly sedate election night in the District of Columbia, Marion Barry helped shake up the evening with a massive post-victory Twitter burst as it became certain Tuesday night that the former mayor would secure another four-year term representing Ward 8 on the D.C. Council.

He didn't have to wait long. As early returns came, it was abundantly clear that Barry was crushing his divided competition and that he would be cruising to the November general election. Messages coming from Barry's Twitter created an online victory party of sorts.

Wednesday morning, he admitted things were a bit "wild" last night, which saw the councilmember's Twitter feed retweet scores tweets from well wishers.

Barry, whose name became a trending topic locally, tweeted a handful of celebratory messages, which were retweeted.

But chances are, the tweets weren't coming directly from the councilmember.

"I’ve never said I was a master tweeter," Barry said earlier this winter on "The Politics Hour" on WAMU-FM, when he admitted that others tweet for him.

Barry said in November that he "twags," where he "tweets with swag."
