Weight Loss Success: Keith Moore Was Inspired By Wife Jen To Lose 100 Pounds

Got a success story of your own? Send it to us at success.stories@huffingtonpost.com and you could be featured on the site!

Name: Keith Moore
Age: 33
Height: 5'10"
Before Weight: 293 pounds

How I Gained It: I was never careful of what I ate my entire life. I didn't know what a portion was, I did not know what the right foods were to eat. I wanted to get the best value for my money, so I'd go to a buffet and eat and eat and eat. I would get the most food for the best value and with that I found my weight increasing exponentially.

I was working 80 hours a week in retail, and I would just grab a candy bar to keep me on my feet to keep my energy up. I would eat horrible junk food like chips, soda and fast food in the small time allotted for a break. I would fast all day and then compress thousands of calories into nighttime eating.

I was terribly unhealthy. My doctor told me I was morbidly obese, but for years I didn't believe him. I was in denial. He said that obesity was linked to conditions that run in my family, like heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure, so he really wanted me to get a handle on my weight before I got older and these things started becoming more serious issues.

Breaking Point: I had recently been laid off. If I was bored, I ate. I watched TV and snacked. I had nothing to do ... I was eating, eating and eating more.

I didn't have a breaking point until I saw my wife Jen start to lose weight with Hoopnotica. I thought, "Okay, here's another one of Jen's wacky ideas," but this time she was absolutely serious. We started to team up; she found a healthier food plan to fit with my likes and dislikes.

I never saw the weight go on, I was in denial. I thought realistically that I could stand to lose 20 pounds, but after three weeks and 20 pounds were gone, I was still pretty much the same. That's when I got serious about weight loss and changing my lifestyle to a healthier life for my wife and children.

How I Lost It: I kept to my meal plan, and I still do. Jen and I say we have a "condition" that we will have for the rest of our lives. I regulate myself. When I'm not careful, I can put weight back on very quickly.

We don't eat out anymore. I felt especially horrible after the last time we did. We cook for ourselves and eat healthy, organic food whenever possible.

I started losing weight by hooping and took off a ton of pure fat. I didn't want to put on muscle yet; it's extra weight that I did not want to carry around. I wasn't healthy at the time, so I felt like bulking up would be counter-intuitive. I wanted to keep thin and healthy. I did endurance-style exercises like running to complement my Hoopnotica training. I really worried about my health and my heart, so I kept up the cardio.

After I lost an initial 90 pounds or so, I started to think about muscle. I do weight train now, but I still don't want to be too big. Right now it's all about maintenance. I never feel deprived; I feel very satisfied. I hit the gym five, sometimes six days a week.

The best part about losing weight was that it gave me an opportunity to have time with my kids and my wife. I don't want to miss another landmark in my children's lives. I really hope that Jen and I can instill In our children the same urgency to stamp out obesity from their lives. Jen and I ate horribly for years. We tell our children this is what we used to look like, we don't want you to end up like we were. We make sure to remind them how important whole foods are, instead of processed junk.

I am now a Hoopnotica instructor and I am on my way to getting a degree in health/exercise science. I want to use my newfound love to pay it forward -- spread the hoop love and healthy living!

I love these weight loss stories where people have had huge success simply by eating healthier and moving more... no complicated diet tricks or crazy workouts. I lost 50 pounds in about 4 months by working out 30 minutes a day and not dining out. I'm now convinced that a lot of people in this country have weight problems as a result of dining out far too often. I expected it to take longer to lose the 50 pounds I wanted to lose, but once I cut out restaurant food and added working out (30 minutes is such a small time commitment), the pounds just melted off. It took far less effort that I thought it would. I've never heard of Hoopnotica before reading this. It sounds fun! I loved my hula-hoop as a kid. Maybe I will add it to my workout routine.

Great job, Keith! You and Jen will save many lives, not just your own, with this turn your lives have taken. I have maintained my ideal body weight for almost 30 years after losing 140 pounds in 1984 after 25 years of obesity. Permanent weight loss is entirely possible, and you are on the right path for it. Our stories have a lot of similarities. Best wishes.

One more gullible male who is a product of out-of-date thinking. You'll understand when I tell you the words in this article that immediately caught my attention. "I didn't know what a portion was. I did not know what the right food were to eat. I wanted to get the best value for my money so I'd go to a buffet." I dated a man who was raised to think a GOOD meal and a GOOD restaurant was a place that was cheap and more food to eat than could feed 15 people. I completely understand how older generation came to think this way...the depression, WWII, rationing, hard-times. This generation was taught ECONOMY! These were the same people who preached clean your plate no matter HOW sick or stuffed you feel. NEVER waste food. I know DOZENS of people raised this way. My older family members used to say this to me and actually apologized one day when they learned I had GI problems. He wasn't overweight, too hyper for that, but this man wouldn't know GOOD food (flavor or quality) if it bit him. Everything in those places is out of a box, bottle, jar or can. A major reason they're unhealthy!

Congrats! He is right. I am no "expert" (thank god!) but I can tell you the times in my life I have been obese have been when I have: 1) Been in denial and refused to "look" at myself square on in the mirror and see the state of my body; 2) Have fasted all day and ate thousands of calories at night; 3) Have consumed a diet full of carbs, sugars, flours, diet sodas and just general junk. High protein, low carb and drinking only unsweetened tea, black coffee and water or natural flavored seltzer will set your body on the road to recovery. Do light weight training and cardio to tolerance and you can do it. Admit and be honest with yourself. Greasy chinese food, pizza, candies and cookies and other garbage are of no nutritional value!
01:26 PM on 04/05/2012
A huge (no pun intended) part of our society is ignorant when it comes to nutrition. AND some people just plain don't care. "I'm gonna eat it anyway." That being said, "Get up and shake that booty"!

I think the "not eating out" part is pretty ridiculous. I am very happy for this guy and his dramatic life-style change, but going out to eat is something you treat yourself to, not something you should be doing several times a week. If you're going to eat healthy your whole life then that's fine and dandy, but you're seriously not going to treat yourself maybe once a month to a delicious fattening meal?

Having one big naughty dinner once a month is not going to break your healthy new body. I would go completely crazy if I couldn't eat bad foods every now and then.

Maybe, but the more we learn about what they put in our food, the less likely I am to think of eating out as a "treat". That said, at least once a year....fried clams :)
01:57 PM on 04/05/2012
I agree, the idea of not eating out once in a while is silly. When I finally got serious about my weight and health problems I decided that I would make a plan that I could work with and keep to it. It is not in any book but my own. My Dr. tells me what ever I am doing it is working and to stick to it. I like the idea of even a one pound a week loss as it does stay off. I measure or weigh my foods, I also cook and eat most of my meals at home. I allow two times a month out. I ask that half of my meal be boxed before I even see it. I have reached the point that I now open the box and put part of what I don't eat in the box to take home. In short...I now eat about 1/3 of what I order and I take home the part that can be reheated and used for lunch or another dinner a couple of more days. I also havae one scoop of ice cream...real stuff...once a week and eat it very slowly...........

I lost my weight by not eating out. I over-ate in restaurants. I would always order an appetizer and eat everything brought to my table. It was a bad habit. Now I'm used to eating smaller portions. Not to mention the $$$ I've saved.
10:51 AM on 04/05/2012
I should add that I am by nature an eater of large quantities and lots of fatty, sugary foods, not a teeny person like a friend who once told me, horrified, "Oh, I could NEVER eat all of a big ol' candy bar." (still laughing years later - I could eat a big ol' BAG of candy bars). So when I say I found a lower fat, lower sodium meal at a restaurant and it was delicious, I mean it was delicious. Usually I hate "diet" food, but I'm learning there are ways to limit and do things in moderation that still taste good.
11:43 AM on 04/05/2012
Healthy, non-processed food is not "diet food"and honestly I think that misconception is what plays into the American obesity problem.

true enough.

but healthy non-processed food is also much more expensive than its less healthy counter part. which is a deterrent for a lot of people.

If you don't eat junk (sugar + flour), you'll lose a lot of weight and be healthier. I had a health scare and in three months dropped 60lbs and my blood tests were awesome(over a year now). Sugar and flour are the worst for your body. They have zero nutritional value, but they have lobbyists to keep their products from being labelled with an RDA.
10:45 AM on 04/05/2012
As for eating out, it is possible to limit the "damage," if you find yourself needing to eat out once in a while, if you find restaurants who will give you their nutritional info or post it on their web site. I have an elderly friend who loves a famous national-chain Italian restaurant that might be a kind of "garden" (wink wink), and time with her is more important to me than avoiding this restaurant 3 or 4 times a year. So I looked on their web site and found a relatively healthy, lower-fat, lower-sodium entree (sandwich) and knew what I would order before I arrived. It turned out to be delicious, by the way. In addition, I ate half of a small bread stick and a light "sprinkling" of salad dressing I ordered on the side (about a tablespoon - not the vat I used to eat). We're planning our seasonal lunch there soon, and I'll be ordering the same again.

a minute personal victory, at best.

As a Public Health professional, I can assure you most people do not know what a portion is anymore - especially because what they think constitutes a portion is reinforced by people around them who are also eating way too much.

Examples:
A serving of meat is the size of a deck of cards.
A serving of rice is 1/2 cup.
A serving of peanut butter is only 2 Tablespoons.
1 banana (because it is so dense with so much sugar) actually has 2 servings.
10:33 AM on 04/05/2012
I don't trust a public health professionals. A serving is different for each individual person. It's based on dietary needs, hormonal responses and lean body mass. A one size fits all approach is utterly ridiculous.
11:14 AM on 04/05/2012
Yeah great theory. If only all the obese people in America would come to realize their personal strategy for weight loss and what proper serving sizes are for them personally. Give me a break. A generalized plan for a 2000 calorie diet is reasonable to spread to all the uneducated general public who have no idea what a portion size is.

You don't have to trust me - that's your perogative.

A serving is a serving for everyone - the difference is that some people (based on age, fitness, etc) can eat more servings of certain things than others with similar results. Unfortunately this can be easily misconstrued by people who use it as a justification to eat more than is healthy for them to eat.
