Hidden Valley For Everything Ranch Dressing: The Next Ketchup?

Posted: 04/ 5/2012 10:32 am Updated: 04/ 5/2012 4:19 pm

Ranch Ketchup

Heinz better watch its back -- Hidden Valley is trying to steal ketchup's thunder. The Wall Street Journal reports that Hidden Valley has released a "new thicker, creamier version" of its Ranch dressing and the company isn't exactly hiding its intentions. The label boldly proclaims at the top that it is "The New 'Ketchup.'" The product itself is a topping and dip entitled "Hidden Valley for Everything." Clearly, this isn't a subtle message. Hidden Valley wants your French fries slathered in their Ranch, not Heinz's ketchup.

Even if you're down for swapping your red bottle for a white one, don't expect to see Ranch adorning restaurant tables across the country. Unlike ketchup, Hidden Valley for Everything needs to be refrigerated.

An early reviewer is a fan and remarks that the topping/dip is definitely creamier.

Although the WSJ piece claims that the new product was inspired after an executive watched his daughter "bathe her entire salmon in ranch dressing," we're inclined to think that Melissa McCarthy's epic "SNL" skit might have played a part as well. In the video below, McCarthy plays an obsessive Hidden Valley fan who goes gaga over the company's products. The sketch might not depict reality, but her enthusiasm hits upon something that is: people love creamy food.

Your move, Heinz.

You remember that movie Undercover Brother?
There is a scene where he has to eat mayonnaise so he can infiltrate white people or something....anyway, to get around it he has a special watch that secretly squirts hot sauce onto anything....anyway....

What I'm saying is that mayonnaise and hot sauce mixed together beats both ketchup and Ranch dressing

My french fries like to experiment with new sauces. Ranch is so 1998.

This is a great idea, because our food doesn't have enough salt, sugar and fat in it already. No wonder so many people are fat and sick.

There is a market for both.

It does not have to be an either or decision.

I like to mix a ranch dressing packet, cream cheese, and sour cream.

It makes a great dip for fries, chips, veggies, breads and baked potatoes.

This is clearly an advertisement. Seriously. Cut it out. You're starting to pull this way too often.

Still a toss up. Hidden Valley has to tackle VP of ketchup, French Fries. Once you get the seasoned potato on your side, Ketchup is finished.

Am I the only weirdo that eats mustard on fries?

Well, besides the Slingblade guy.

Not at all. I especially love honey mustard on mine, as well as barbecue sauce. Actually, I rarely eat french fries with less than four different sauces to switch back and forth among.

Sriracha is the new ketchup. Ranch is the old nasty.

You rock. I just had an F.O. thinking about sriracha on fries. Why have I never thought of this?
01:17 PM on 04/07/2012
I do not eat fries, but if I eat hash browns I like ketchup on them. I have noticed my children and their friends like ranch dressing with fried foods, pizza, and even some breads. I am not a fan of creamy dressings.

I only like ketchup on cheeseburgers. Everything else, hand over the ranch. It makes everything better.
