Israel Rocket Attack: Resort City Eilat Hit Overnight

By TIA GOLDENBERG 04/ 5/12 12:08 PM ET AP

JERUSALEM — Israel's prime minister on Thursday warned that Egypt's Sinai desert is becoming a "terror zone" and vowed to strike at militants there after a rocket fired from the area hit a southern Israeli resort town.

The tough talk, however, was tempered by Israel's desire not to disturb the already fraught relationship with Egypt. Israeli officials acknowledged their options are limited as the new government in Egypt – one of Israel's few allies in the Arab world – tries to secure its sovereignty over the mountainous Sinai Peninsula.

Thursdays' rocket attack, the first on Eilat in nearly two years, raised new Israeli concerns about militant activity in Sinai, particularly since the fall of Hosni Mubarak's regime last year. Israeli security officials have repeatedly warned of a power vacuum in Egypt and say that Islamic militants, including al-Qaida, have stepped up their activity in Sinai and are now active on Israel's doorstep.

"We are seeing now with Eilat that the Sinai Peninsula is turning into a terror zone," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. "We will strike at those who attack us. There can be no immunity for terrorism; it must be fought and we are doing so."

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak threatened to "strike those responsible for firing (the Grad rocket) at Eilat."

No injuries were reported in the overnight strike against Eilat, a normally tranquil Red Sea vacation spot that is set to welcome thousands of visitors this weekend for the Passover holiday.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, and Egypt denied the attack was launched from its territory. "The chief of security of southern Sinai has already denied that the rocket was fired from the Sinai territory," Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Amr told reporters in Cairo.

But Israel military officials, citing intelligence, said all signs were that the rocket had been fired from Egypt. It would be the third such time since 2010 that militants in Egypt have fired rockets toward Israel.

Israel has warned of growing lawlessness in Sinai following the uprising last year that overthrew Mubarak's regime.

Sensing the growing threat, Israel has increased its surveillance on the Egyptian border and is building an electronic barrier along the 230 kilometer (150 mile) frontier in a bid to keep out militants and illegal migrants. It is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

But the fence cannot protect southern Israel from rockets, a gap that Netanyahu pointed out on Thursday.

Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip, separated by a border fence from Israel, have fired thousands of rockets into Israel in recent years. Israel has responded to Gaza rocket fire with military reprisals and the deployment of a rocket-interception system known as Iron Dome.

Rocket fire from Egypt is far rarer, and it is not clear if Israel plans to move the anti-rocket system, which is still in its infancy and expensive to deploy, to the border with Egypt.

Thursday's attack left Israel in a delicate position: absorbing hostile fire from a neighboring country but having few options to respond.

Eli Shaked, a former Israeli ambassador to Egypt, said Israel's hands are tied until a government takes shape in Cairo that is ready and able to tackle the militancy in the Sinai Peninsula. Israel's historic peace agreement with Egypt is a cornerstone of Israeli security policy, and Israel cannot do anything that might sabotage the peace.

"Israel has no choice but to wait," he said.

An Israeli official echoed those limitations.

"We will fight terror, of course, but we don't intend to enter Egyptian territory. That's not an option," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the sensitive diplomatic issue with the press. "We can talk to (the Egyptians), but that's it."

Both Shaked and the official were confident Egypt would work to rein in anarchy in Sinai, but that it would take time before it could do so. Egypt votes for a new president in May.

No injuries were reported in Thursday's incident. But it was part of a string of attacks believed to have been launched from Sinai over the past year years.

Last August, gunmen from Sinai sneaked into Israel and ambushed vehicles on a desert highway, killing eight Israelis. Three Egyptian soldiers were killed in Israel's subsequent hunt for the militants, causing a diplomatic crisis that ended with an Israeli apology. It is unclear if Israeli soldiers crossed the border in their chase.

That incident suggested that Gaza militants with their allies in neighboring Sinai were exploiting Egypt's political turmoil to open a new front against Israel.

It also highlighted the delicate balance Israel must maintain between trying to defend its border and protect its relationship with Egypt.

Rockets last hit Eilat and the nearby Jordanian town of Aqaba in August 2010, killing one person and wounding four. In April of that year, two rockets landed in Aqaba and the remains of one were found in the waters off Eilat.

Egypt became the first Arab nation to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979. After Mubarak's fall and with the rise of Islamist parties who traditionally view Israel with hostility, Israel has become concerned that the accord may be under threat.

The Muslim Brotherhood, the largest party in Egypt's parliament, does not openly oppose the peace deal, but has said it would consider amending the pact to allow more Egyptian troops along the border with Israel. The deployment of Egyptian forces in Sinai is limited under the 1979 deal.

Israel's insistence that the peninsula be significantly demilitarized was a key aspect of the 1979 peace deal.

Today, however, this provision makes it difficult for Israel itself to demand the Egyptians do a better job of policing the vast desert triangle that separates Asia from Africa. In the aftermath of Mubarak's ouster, Israel permitted Egypt to send in more troops than the 750 allowed under the treaty.

For some reason, I cannot use the "reply" function in the "comment reply notification system. So, I will simply make a new post. Broken Crown, you obviously do not respect my opinion if you have to insist without any actual proof that I am "easily persuaded by whatever the media wants me to believe." I knew (for instance) from all the evidence in the reports that the French shooter was a pseudo-Islamic terrorist & not a white supremacist that The Media was trying to say it was, initially. And if I'm wrong, here, I won't have a problem with owning up.

If the Arabs had ANY interest in peace this would have been over decades ago. But they don't and thats why more on both sides will inevitably die
12:57 PM on 04/08/2012
Obviously Passover is the best time for Arabs to attack Israel and Arabs are not going to miss this "opportunity".
Israel has no choice but to liberate the Sinai peninsula from the Arab colonial occupation once again and to establish final border between Egypt and Israel along the Suez Canal.

From September 2000, to the end of June 2011, Israeli civilians killed 50 Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. From December 1987, when the first intifada erupted, until the outbreak of the second intifada, Israeli civilians killed 115 Palestinians. The vast majority of these murders were done by illegal settlers. I defy anyone to find me honest accounts of these crimes in American media sources. I defy anyone to find me the names of more than 3 of these murder victims.

I defy you to come up with a reputable source which details those "Israeli civilians" killing Palestinians. Does it include those "victims" who were filmed getting up and climbing back onto their funeral biers multiple times after being accidentally dumped off? No doubt the only "source" you can come up with is the same one which claimed only one Israeli civilian killed during the time which included when the Fogel family was slaughtered.

I defy you to give me an honest account of the proportions of civilians vs. combatants killed on both sides and acknowledge that Palestinian "militants" deliberately target civilians while Israel targets those "militants."

I won't be holding my breath.

So, let me get this straight, in 11 years, 50 people were murdered? Wow, stop the presses. That's, what, 5 murders a year? And you act like it's some sort of catastrophe? Not to be cold, but check out how many whites were killed by blacks or blacks killed by whites of any other "one group killing another group" happened in, say, Detroit during that time. Then come back and tell me how 50 murders over 11 years is grounds for launching terrorist attacks.

One wonders what the average American would think if equal media coverage were given to each time that an Israeli settler attacked or killed a Palestinian.

There are 200 million Arabs in the Gaza strip and West Bank?.....now that's news,
in 2009 there were 3.9 million in the Palestinian Territory (36.6%), 1.2 million (11.5%) in Israel; 5.0 million in Arab countries (46.2%), 0.6 million in foreign countries (5.7%). and yet according to your estimates there are now 200 million,

Tens of thousands kept in each of his jails, wow, that is news,

As the jerusalem grand mufti declares war on all Jews

As Palestinian continue to be supported by the biggest welfare handout outs in history -- YOUR TAX DOLLARS

As thesE Palestinains continue with their gender and racial apartheid

As these Palestinains continue their homophobia

As these Palestinians continue with hate speeches right across their religious and educational and media spectrums

Cognitive dissonance much?

I'd hardly call what the the Palestinians are doing "carpet bombing." This implies a massive air assault with bombers which the Palestinians obviously don't have. Some of your points are valid but some are also way out of date.

The Israel-Palestinian conflict is held to a much higher magnification that any other disput ein the world. That's the truth and the hypocrisy of the whole matter.

The flaming and whining and hysterical ranting by the pro-Israel set is really not winning friends for Israel.
You make a claim like "carpet bombing" and everything you say (even the rare truth) is cast in doubt and looks like another lie.
The people of the United States are starting to realize that our "friendship" for Israel is a one-way street and is costing this country much more than the billions we pour into Israel each year.
Israel is the World's largest welfare queen, one that constantly demands more.
Now your Netanyahu wants the United States to attack Iran. Why? There's nothing Iran can do to America. And, if we don't harm them, they won't even try to support terrorists here. If Israel, with the largest military in the ME and the only nuclear weapons can't deal with their own paranoia, why should the United States?

To all the boycotters:
•Discard all mobile phones, as this technology was developed in Israel, where the first mobile phones were manufactured. Mobile chip technology from a single Israeli company has now been installed in over 100 million devices.
•Only department heads may retain mobile phones for emergency situations. However the use of SMS (Texting) is expressly forbidden as this facility was developed in Israel.
•No 4G devices can be used as the chipset is Israeli.
•Turn off your voice-mail service and delete any recorded messages. Israeli companies invented the voice-mail system.
•If your call is not answered by someone you know, hang up. Israeli call-centres and call-centre technology is in widespread operation in the UK.
•Do not use the Internet to search for answers to your questions as this may involve use of an Israeli-developed search engine. Better to remain unenlightened.

The Israeli company trans chip invented the first high resolution camera phone that fits on a single electronic chip.
Israel also developed Intel’s Pentium chips, which can be found in Microsoft XP and Vista for Microsoft Windows.

I still wonder about the same topic which no one is able to answer for some reason.

The so called palestinians proclaim that historic palestine existed, they have deeds and rusty keys to their homes in the land of palestine. Meanwhile, according to history, palestine never existed. In 1967, during the Six Days War (Milhamat Sheshet ha Yamim), Israel reclaimed East Jerusalem and the WB from Jordan, Gaza from Egypt. Not from palestine, but from Jordan and Egypt.

What exactly is historic palestine if not an invention in an attempt to steal what never belonged to these people?

palestinians are native Jordanians, they are from the land of the Hashemites.

But be that as it may, today they exist, shouldn't they start behaving like people who really do desire determination? shouldn't they try to prove that they are capable of independence, of living in peace with it's neighbors?

Their only chance to secure statehood is via peaceful sustainable negotiations with no pre-conditions. Why not grab this amazing opportunity?
05:57 PM on 04/06/2012
The population of Palestine in 1850 had about 350,000 inhabitants, 30% of whom lived in 13 towns; roughly 85% were Muslims, 11% were Christians and 4% Jews[48]
According to Ottoman statistics studied by Justin McCarthy,[49] the population of Palestine in the early 19th century was 350,000, in 1860 it was 411,000 and in 1900 about 600,000 of which 94% were Arabs. In 1914 Palestine had a population of 657,000 Muslim Arabs, 81,000 Christian Arabs, and 59,000 Jews.

The term Peleset (transliterated from hieroglyphs as P-r-s-t) is found in numerous Egyptian documents referring to a neighboring people or land starting from c.1150 BCE during the Twentieth dynasty of Egypt. The first mention is thought to be in texts of the temple at Medinet Habu which record a people called the Peleset among the Sea Peoples who invaded Egypt in Ramesses III's reign.[10] The Assyrians called the same region Palashtu or Pilistu, beginning with Adad-nirari III in the Nimrud Slab in c.800 BCE through to emperor Sargon II in his Annals approximately a century later.[11][12][1] Neither the Egyptian or Assyrian sources provided clear regional boundaries for the term.
The first clear use of the term Palestine to refer to the entire area between Phoenicia and Egypt was in 5th century BC Ancient Greece.[13] Herodotus wrote of a 'district of Syria, called Palaistinê" in The Histories, the first historical work clearly defining the region
