Boy Scout Troop Patch Depicts 'Fleeing Immigrants' And Causes Controversy

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: 04/ 5/2012 2:16 pm Updated: 04/ 9/2012 2:28 pm

UPDATE: 1:10 p.m., 4/9--

After last week's controversial debate surrounding a Boy Scout's patch, Latino Rebels reported that they met with the Troop 11 community in Milwaukee. Christine Nuemann Ortiz from Voces De La Frontera also attended the meeting and explained the image's history and it's meaning. By the end of the meeting the young man who tweeted accusing Latino Rebels of being pedophiles apologized for his actions.

To date, all the patches are off the troop's uniforms and a new a patch will be made, according to Latino Rebels.

PREVIOUSLY:

A debate surrounding a Boy Scout patch surfaced the internet last week. The patch in question depicts the iconic "fleeing immigrants" image. It belongs to Troop 11, a 100-year-old scouts troop from Milwaukee, whose members are mainly Latino boys aged 10-18.

On March 27th, the site Latino Rebels contacted the Boy Scouts of America, questioning the organization about the image depicted in the patch. The initial response they got was from Frank Ramirez, Program Specialist of Boy Scouts of America saying, "the National Council, Boy Scouts of America, had nothing to do with the production of this image, and as such, is not part of the Advancement program for our youth."

Late last week the issue became more complicated.

Latino Rebels received a response by assistant Scoutmaster Bradley Schultz, confirming that the patch was created by the troop about 10 years ago.

"We knew we wanted to be named 'Border', but we wanted an image to go with it," said Schultz in an email to Latino Rebels.

Each troop from the Boy Scouts of America is made up up of approximately 20-60 young men. Troops are divided intro patrols which have 5-9 boys.

"Each patrol gets to select its own patrol name. Patrol names can be just about anything the boys decide," according to an email statement by David Burke, Communications Specialist for the Boy Scouts of America. In this case, the patrol decided they would be called was "Border".

"Neither the United States Border Patrol or the Boy Scouts of America were involved in the naming of the patrol, or the production or distribution of the patch," concluded Burke.

In 2002, a member of the Troop 11 of Mexican descent visited Texas and saw the road sign image. He brought the idea back to Milwaukee and it was then agreed that the image would become the official patch for "Border Patrol", according to the Troop's statement.

The troop may now face serious consequence as the National Leadership of the Boy Scouts of America has deemed the patch "unauthorized".

The image will most likely be changing, according to assistant Scoutmaster Schultz. "We have been told by our council that if we don't change the NAME of the patrol the troop will be disbanded as a whole," Schultz added.

News of the possible demobilizing of the "Border Patrol" gave way to a semi-cyber warfare. The Boys Scout Troop created a Twitter account called @troop11eagle where they've issued responses to Latino Rebel's coverage of the story.

thank you for ruining a family, being in this troop i've learned BROTHERHOOD. have a nice day.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a cool patrol name.

The group reiterates the fact that the controversial patch, although depicting the heated immigration topics, was chosen by the troop's groups members of Latino descent.

this was created by latinos.

"They wanted this because they didn't wanna be associated with those that come to our country illegally. This has been part of our troop for almost 10 years," said Ryan Antczak, another assistant scoutmaster for Troop 11, to Latino Rebels.

"We are located in a very diverse area were the majority of Latin decent. No one has been offended till this day. We are not embarrassed by a branch of our government that serve this country proudly who put their lives on the line."

For the record, we're still the Border Patrol. We're the awesomest Troop on the planet. People need to chill. There isnt any hate that started with the Border Patrol. PC has gone to far. For the past 101 years, Troop 11 been making outstanding gentlemen. With 20 Eagle Scuts now & 4 more this year. Our work speaks for itself. 24 Eagle Scouts in 6 years speaks for itself. Ive received alot of praise from MANY PEOPLE for standing up to this. The Latino Rebel botched this story from jumpstreet. Quick to broadcast w/o any journalism seeking for the facts. Yes we had a mtg & agreed to remove the image that .0000000000001 of the population seems to be offended. But we redesigned it & made it bigger. The only people that were opposed were the parent, Voces de la Fontera, & running rebels in Colorado. Otherwise thanks for publicity with some popularity. Theres also an Eagle patrol. Im hoping the Eagles arent offended. Too bad no one covered how Troop 11 is 1 of only a handful of Boy Scout Troops in the USA to be over 100 years old or all the great work & outstanding young men came from Troop 11. Especially in the last 11 years. Heres a question.. How do u determine a race of those on street signs? Were just not seeing it.. Racism, hate, political correctness, have no part in my Troop & in this world.
Yours Truly,

the ONLY controversy that SHOULD exist is in the fact that once your borders have COLLAPSED (by virtue of either the lack-of-will OR the lack-of-ability to enforce them) you can no longer claim to be an integral country....

either you HAVE borders, they are enforceable AND the government does actually enforce them in a manner according to the law .....

or, yo do NOT have borders or they are NOT enforceable or the government doesn't have the ability to enforce them...

in the latter, you are no longer able to say you HAVE a particular border because, technically, your borders have COLLAPSED....

there have been MANY wars fought for a LOT less than this...

If anyone can't understand why this is inappropriate you’re either desensitized to horrific human conditions or have never step foot in the desert between the U.S. and Mexico. Try walking 20 minute’s midday in July or August without water …… It'll scare the pants off you.

Is anybody else REALLY sick of all this PC garbage? I didn't know silhouette images automatically implied hispanic. Guess I learned something new today.

As an aside, if a certain group is dismayed at being associated with that particular sign, try NOT running across the road, dragging your kids illegally into another country.
Win/Win for everybody.

Latino Rebels are just Political Correctness Police for Latino issues, nothing rebellious about that. I'm sick of them already, always finding a way to claim to be offended over some BS nonsense.

funny, how these "rebels" somehow don't accomplish much after earning their merit badges for learning to spell "latrine"

If you have ever driven across the border into Mexico, you will see that the image on the patch is actually on a number of signs near crossing points.

People really need to relax.

Troops are made of 50-60 individuals? I was in two. The first one had around 20 and the second had around 150.

Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a t/u/rd by the clean end."

I think what we have here is a case of "Opportunistic Outrage". Something we see far too often in society and highlighted by this website! (Anyone remember the artificial ā€œBilly Crystal Blackfaceā€ controversy.)

Never mind that boys involved in the Boy Scouts are less likely to do drugs, drop out of school, get better grades and become productive members of society. With ever increasing cuts to public education the BSA is often the only opportunity boys have to learn skills and be introduced to things beyond their own neighborhood.

After a meeting between Troop 11, representatives from latinorebels.com, and @panchoplata1, and with pressure from the national office of the BSA, the Troop has discontinued the use of the patch.

Wheew. . . that’s good! Now we can all move on and find something else to pretend to be offended by.

The meeting went great. Proving once again that when Americans get together to discuss an issue respectfully, great things can happen. Just because you weren't offended doesn't mean that others feel the same way. That is why the country rocks. We can discuss issues and try to work together.

In the late 80’s I was a member of the BSA in Southern California and we stated a ā€œBorderā€ Patrol in our troop. The ā€œFleeing Immigrantsā€ patch is tame compared to our insignia. The symbol on our flag would have created a much larger fire storm of controversy in today’s pc climate.
We found the name to be ironic and a humorous play on the term patrol. I imagine the boys in Troop 11 felt the same. The irony is especially biting for this incarnation as it seems they are made up of Latino boys.

I was interested to find out what caused the uproar since this patch has been in use for 10 years and, ā€œNo one has been offended till this dayā€.

According to latinrebels.com;
The story started when @panchoplata1 stopped by a friend's house and saw the patch on his friend's desk. The parent, whose son had just joined the troop, told @panchoplata1 that his son had gotten the patch for joining the troop. The parent asked troop leaders about the patch and got no answers, so that is when @panchoplata1 approached Latino Rebels.

I can’t tell you if @panchoplato1 is Pancho Plata the hype man for Chicago based Spanish language, hip hop artists Kinto Sol, whose mascot is a skeleton wearing a ski mask and dressed in a sombrero and crossed gun belts. (If we’re talking about offensive symbols I think we have a winner!)

PanchoPlata is a person who lives in Milwaukee. As the founder and editorial director for LatinoRebels.com, we reported a story and people worked together in a positive way. Sorry you don't agree, but don't start spreading inaccuracies about what really happened? Thanks for quoting our story.
