Mitt Romney May Face Evangelical Problem

First Posted: 04/05/2012 9:51 am Updated: 06/05/2012 5:12 am

Mother Jones:

It hasn't been pretty--often, it's been quite ugly--but after racking up three more primary wins in Wisconsin, Maryland, and Washington, DC, on Tuesday, Mitt Romney has almost guaranteed that he will become the first Mormon presidential nominee from a major party.

He shouldn't be too concerned. After all, those fanatic bible thumpers will certainly choose him over Obama just on principle.

It is wrong to assume that those who take their faith seriously will vote for him. One pastor in Florida said in public about 10% of blacks will not vote for a Mormon because of the past mistreatment done to blacks by the Mormon Church. There are many believers who think that Mormonism is a cult. Although many Conservatives hate BHO policies, BHO is personally more likable than Romney. Romney is not properly vetted.More than his faith, Romney's records and shiftiness will be a real problem to him. i wonder why we don't discus more about his private sector experiences and past records to know more about him.

I'd say, "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone..." but then they'd each be throwing rocks at each other. When are we going to elect an unapologetic atheist? All this fantasy-pandering is like a bad soap opera.

Romney already does face a Evangelical problem as illustrated by Rick S. He had to outspend him 50 to 1 to take him by single digits in Wisconsin and that, (as we know) isn't because Rick is such a stellar alternative. Unless they can force Rick to totally drop out, in the coming primaries they'll have to continue the same rate of spending to keep delivering Romney victories.

This will be such an interesting play to watch.

A Mormon capitalist or a Muslim Socialist. Their choices as they see it.

These fundamentalist christians are going to be such interesting characters in the drama.

After Obama wins the election nothing will change for them. It never does. They live in a middle age fantasy land that exists only in their minds. I wish they could leave and go live there.

As Ed Koch says, "The chickens are coming home to roost.". I will bet that the white conservative conservative ministers will go for Mittens because of their hatred for a Black President. So much for making a stand based on their religious beliefs but they will stand for Mittens based on their racist beliefs.

IF Willard gets into the White House, count on Brigham Young and Joseph Smith being in his pocket...governing & ruling both his and our country's every move.Very scary.
05:36 AM on 04/10/2012
What would that mean????? Romney is not the President of the Church of Latter day Saints an has no say in how it is run.... He will rule our country, but govern it according to the Constitution.......

The most disturbing thing about this article is all the so-called Christian leaders spouting straight-out bigotry - against another sect of Christianity, and against a Christian President. While Obama advocates (for the most part; war is evil) basic Christian tenants like making room at the table for all, caring for the most vulnerable members of society, family values, etc., these bigots at the pulpit call him "the devil" and say "anyone but Obama. And for no other reason but because they have been brainwashed into believing that if someone is Democrat they are anti-Christian (such a ridiculous belief that it makes me slap my liberal Christian forehead). All they are really doing is flaunting their hypocrisy and fakeness for all the world to see.

if people are not satisfied with either candidate, there is the option of writing someone in when they are at the polls

Here in Nevada, we have a "none of the above" line. Love it. Makes more of a statement than voting for least repulsive. Occasionally, none of the above gets the most votes. Think about it.

If they don't like Romney then writing in St. Ricky will do nothing but insure another victory for Obama, which it is looking like anyway, so do your worst split the vote.
