Obama Urged To Pressure Colombia On Workers' Rights Following Murders

Barack Obama

WASHINGTON -- On Wednesday, the leaders of the largest coalition of American labor unions sent a letter to President Barack Obama urging him to maintain pressure on the Colombian government to end the rampant violence against union workers in the South American nation.

Saturday marks the one-year anniversary of the signing of a Labor Action Plan between the two nations, an accord which helped Obama garner votes from congressional Democrats and that enabled the passage of a free-trade agreement with Colombia last fall. The AFL-CIO has long been critical of the trade pact, which originally was negotiated by former President George W. Bush, on the grounds that the Colombian government does not have the capacity to enforce protections for workers.

"It is premature to declare the Labor Action Plan a success," wrote AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka in the Wednesday letter, obtained by HuffPost. "Now is not the time to relieve the pressure on Colombia to uphold the commitments it made in the Labor Action Plan."

Trumka detailed a host of labor disputes in Colombia, and noted that the Colombian government has prosecuted less than 10 percent of the cases of 3,000 trade unionists who have been murdered in Colombia since 1989, emphasizing, "None of the 29 labor activists killed in 2011 had their cases resolved by a successful prosecution."

The Labor Action Plan sets no specific benchmarks for reducing violence for the Colombian government to meet to be in compliance. Instead, it requires the nation to establish institutions and programs to protect workers. If those programs are ineffective, the government is still technically in compliance with the plan.

Trumka outlines a handful of problems in the letter, including the local government of Jamundi, Colombia, which chose to fire 43 municipal workers who began an effort to unionize. One of the activists for the new union, Miguel Mallana, "was gunned down in the street on March 25," Trumka wrote.

Obama will visit Cartagena, Colombia, April 14-15 for the Summit of the Americas, an international conference of political leaders hosted by the Organization of American States. If Obama declares that Colombia has met its obligations under the Labor Action Plan, key aspects of the free trade agreement will go into effect.

It's funny to me how the same people who justified invading another country and spending TRILLIONS of dollars doing so, are now the ones telling Obama that he needs to worry about the USA only. Remember that whole "Leader of the Free World" thing?

Besides, pressuring Colombia on human and rights means fairer competition for jobs, or do we REALLY want yet another sotuation where American consumers are supporting American companies using slave labor and abusing their overseas workers they gave YOUR jobs to?

How about think before you post.

Mr. Obama is such a great president, he gave $2.84 billion to Columbia to build an oil refinery, then he turns around and gives them a free trade agreement and he is worried now about unions there. His first priority is to the American citizens of this country and not foreign countries, but he has failed this country. Both parties have also failed this country.

Why must these politicians feel the urge to urge the president in other affairs, that does not and should not even involve America....I know they are all bathing in their money as we speak but I guess that is what keeps them from remember the small people, i.e. WE the people of Amercia...whom should be the number 1 priority for President Obama.
11:02 AM on 04/06/2012
The only reason ob said anything is because his union buds are under attack.
10:56 AM on 04/06/2012
He needs to apply some of that energy here for American workers and not his supporters Then again he has been such a dismal failure he is spreading his great influence and devine utterances around! The unions are saying. Yo we are supporters and donors remember. Like Columbia will listen to him on any thing before Chavez put in his two cents! Seems labor unions are not working elsewhere either.

Enough Obama! Worry about the USA first. Especially the rising gas prices. When gas goes up so does everything else.
11:04 AM on 04/06/2012
I still have to hear of a plan to eliminate speculation which is what raises prices when demand goes down and supplies up. Non of the 2 parties has came out on that subject.

The president doesn't control gas prices. They've been rising at the same rate for 40 years. That aside, the US is responsible for Columbia, both legally and ethically. You're the ones who decided bananas and coca-cola were more important than human lives, and let the fruit companies run rampant, hiring death squads to kill workers who try to strike or unionize.

I thought cocaine was the product of choice in the US. And 40 years ago gas prices were at around 30 cents a gallon. When Obama took office it was under $2 a gallon. I would say it has went way up since Barry was sworn in.

Repubicans, Democrates, and Independent voters, IF you want good government people,
YOU HAVE TO VOTE ALL THE DC WEASELS OUT OF OFFICE.

Especially the biggest weasels of all, Mr. Obama.
10:21 AM on 04/06/2012
none of your business Obama stay out it worry about the people in this country, notice I did not say his country because who knows where that is.
10:34 AM on 04/06/2012
Nice one!
11:03 AM on 04/06/2012
Problem is he isn't worried about Americans at all. He only wants to look good to get votes to further his Socialist agenda. He will say anything to get one single vote. However, if you watch what he says and compare it to what he does, the two are hardly ever the same.

The old PushmePullyou. One group wants him to put pressure on a foreign sovereign nation, but not put pressure on elements with our own. Guess it all depends on your special interest.
