Odwalla Recall: Allergic Reactions Prompt Company To Pull Chocolate Protein Monster Drink

04/ 5/12 09:27 PM ET AP

ATLANTA -- Odwalla Inc. says it is voluntarily recalling its Odwalla Chocolate Protein Monster beverage because four customers who have peanut allergies experienced severe allergic reactions after drinking it.

A news release Thursday from the Coca-Cola-owned company says it is recalling 12-ounce and 32-ounce bottles, with "enjoy by" dates prior to and including May 23, 2012. They were distributed nationwide.

The 12-ounce bottles are also available in variety packs sold at Costco stores.

The company says people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts and/or tree nuts may run the risk of a serious or life-threatening reaction if they consume the drink.

Odwalla says it's working with the FDA to investigate the cause of these allergic reactions since the drink contains no peanut or tree nut ingredients.

I am so angry I could scream! I thrive on that drink. I have one daily and it really does improve my quality of life. People who are allergic to things like peanuts should stay away from soy items since it's a soy BEAN, as in peanut family! Hola? People need to pay attention. And now, because of four IGNORANT people, we all suffer. RUDE!
I hope around June or so we see these back on the shelf. I have been drinking Odwalla since they came out. I was 15 and now I'm 35. So yeah, I'm a little perturbed to say the least. It's no shock either that Coca Cola now owns the company. I bet Pepsi will own it in the end. They own everything. Odwalla, you are tempting me to go to Bolthouse Farms! Get with the program and tell those four people to work on their IQ.

This is a terrible product, not the best company when it came to consumer safety when it was privately owned back in the 90's and being purchased by Coca-Cola has only made things worse. The fresh juices are highly pasteurized which cooks the vitamins and flavor right out of them and most Odwalla travels a long distance unless you live in southern CA.

Haters going to hate. I've been drinking Odwalla for awhile now, Chocolate Monster in particular. Outside of an expired bottle I got once (stores fault, not theres) I have never had a bad experience.

Do you think maybe that the chocolate was processed in a plant where peanuts are sometimes present? Change the label, not necessarily the product.

Or, maybe their nut allergies has now expanded to the cocoa nuts?

Odwalla has had enough safety recalls over the years that I don't go near it. Lots of other choices.

It was bad when it was privately owned back in the 90's (E coli outbreak in 96), but now that Coca-Cola owns it they have gotten even worse.
