Water Main Break In Lower Manhattan Causes Train Delays On 1,2, And 3 Trains (VIDEO)

An water main built in 1899 ruptured in lower Manhattan early Thursday, My Fox New York reports, flooding the Chambers Street station and throwing the morning commute into a tizzy.

The number 1, 2, and 3 trains all experienced serious delays from the rupture which occurred at about 3:15 AM. Train service was suspended on the 1 train between 14th Street and South Ferry. The no. 2 line was running on the 5 line between Nevins Street and Grand Concourse in both directions. And the no. 3 line was suspended from 14th St. to Atlantic Ave. in both directions.

As of 8:30 AM, all service on the trains had resumed with residual delays.

There was also no water for businesses and residents along West Broadway from Chambers Street to Murray Street while officials tried to pump 4 feet of water out of the subway tunnel.

Jim Roberts, director of the Department of Environmental Protection, told The Daily News the cause of the rupture was unknown but that the age of the pipe was probably a factor.
