Although she's a singer by trade, Nicki Minaj grabs more attention for her wardrobe, natch. This is a girl who will wear leopard print hair, a fried chicken necklace, and a dress covered in neon pom-poms (while sitting next to Anna Wintour, no less).

So imagine our shock when we saw the "Starships" singer on the "Today" show this morning wearing what appear to be plain black rain boots. Crazy, right?!

The rest of her outfit was equally toned-down: a black mesh top with leather harnesses across the top, a black bra, black tights and black studded short-shorts. No bright colors, no 3-D objects attached.

And yet Matt Lauer still found the outfit rather shocking (has he never seen Nicki Minaj before?) "I'm looking at your outfit and, I'm sorry, it's hard not to look at your outfit," was Matt's opening line. "How do you decide how to costume yourself on a daily basis?" Nicki replied:

"It's always very impromptu, I hate planning stuff. I don't know. Actually yesterday I told my stylist, I was like, 'You know what? I've been doing so much color recently -- just get me black. Put my dancers in black, put me in black, black black black everything.' And she's like 'Really?' I said, 'Yeah.' "

Hold the phone. Is Nicki moving on from her cotton candy-meets-outer space-meets-Zany Brainy wardrobe onto black tights and flat wellies? Is the sky falling?

Well, at least we've still got Katy Perry.
