Being an introvert I am not shy, but am quiet, simply because I don't need the chatter, attention and distractions most people seem to like. I and other introverts I know have no problems saying no when asked to do something. No need to lie, just say no thank you I am staying home because I want to be alone. My late husband of almost 40 years was an introvert as well and we meshed well.

Its interesting how many introverts I know who don't even own a tv set. We don't. But we love books and have lots of non fiction books. Johnny Carson, Mark Zuckerberg, introverts I know of. Wonder if Mr. Zuckerberg still doesn't have a tv. Introverts can often be less materialistic as well. The less is more lifestyle.

I am an introvert, educating many extroverts to the fact that there is a difference between being introverted and being shy.

I know exactly where my line in the sand is, and am at peace with my introverted self.

I've come to the conclusion that I have about six hours of extrovert in me a week.

This is a problem. Even though I have a job in an office where there's only one other person (my boss, and he's gone a lot) and even though we can go hours without a client coming in or calling, it's an unfortunate fact that even during the quietest weeks, I've shot my wad of extrovert hours by mid-morning on Wednesday at the latest. And that's without having spent any of my six hours "extroverting" with people I actually want to be around. I think I need to find a profession where I can work entirely alone so that I can devote my extrovert hours to activities of my choosing.

Hmmm....I wonder if being perfectly content with six hours of human contact a week puts me on the extreme end of the introvert spectrum...

Love this article about introverts. It seems like this world is full of extroverts so hearing other opinions is important. I started out as an extrovert but realized over time that listening and problem solving is just as important as being heard.

I just watched her TED Talk. It was pretty good but she sounds just like Phoebe on Friends.

It's probably pretty common for introverts to try to be pleasing by acting cute and overly feminine.

To counter the negative nabobs commenting here, I'm half-way through the book and it's terrific. I'm finding tons of information I did not know. She cites studies and theories going back many decades, but I had never heard of them. It's all new to me!
One of the most interesting points is that this country is not like others. It's made up of extroverted immigrants. It took a certain kind of extrovert to leave their home and move to a new and unknown country.
Great job Susan Cain and thank you Arianna!

Excellent...in a noisy, fast, busy world....I agree with Cain...we would all say we need more quiet if asked.

I don't know...I've come across quite a few people (particularly 30 and under) who are downright uncomfortable with silence. It's like "noisy, fast, busy" is all they've ever known, and they're so acclimated to it that any other environment seems unnatural to them.

It's not that they don't need quiet and solitude; they just don't know that they're missing anything.

This isn't new at all. It is valuable to repeat it and write new books about it, but it isn't new at all.

This isn't new. I dont understand why she thinks that. I have books about this published years ago.

I am introvert, but I don't like to talk about to others. Oh....right.....that makes sense.

Susan, I LOVED your book. The first pages brought tears to my eyes as I remembered the constant nagging of my parents to be someone I wasn't. I LOOOOVED what you said about having your latte and laptop and using that as your quiet space, even how you said you are grateful to Starbucks for creating that because I do the SAME THING and have had the same thought! I can't imagine life without my daily coffee retreat; it is total therapy for me. It's a way to get out of the house and be around people without having to talk to them! (I don't even like it when the employees get to know me :) )
