Teen Sells Kidney To Buy iPhone

BEIJING, April 6 (Reuters) - Five people in southern China have been charged with intentional injury in the case of a Chinese teenager who sold a kidney so he could buy an iPhone and an iPad, the government-run Xinhua News Agency said on Friday.

The five included a surgeon who removed a kidney from a 17-year-old boy in April last year. The boy, identified only by his surname Wang, now suffers from renal deficiency, Xinhua quoted prosecutors in Chenzhou city, Hunan province as saying.

According to the Xinhua account, one of the defendants received about 220,000 yuan (about $35,000) to arrange the transplant. He paid Wang 22,000 yuan and split the rest with the surgeon, the three other defendants and other medical staff.

The report did not say who received and paid for the kidney.

The teen was from Anhui, one of China's poorest provinces, where inhabitants frequently leave to find work and a better life elsewhere. He bought an iPhone and iPad, and when asked by his mother where he got the money, admitted selling a kidney.

Apple products are hugely popular in China, but are priced beyond the reach of many Chinese. IPhones start at 3,988 yuan ($633), and iPads begin at 2,988 yuan ($474).

Wang's renal deficiency is deteriorating, Xinhua quoted prosecutors as saying.

Only a fraction of the people who need organ transplants in China are able to get them, leading to "transplant tourism" where patients travel overseas for such operations, and to a black market for human organs.

China banned the trading of human organs in 2007, Xinhua said. Several other suspects involved in the case are still being investigated.

Attristant,un chirurgien sans aucune éthique,je crois qu'en Chine l'obsession de l'enrichissement fait humainement de gros dégats.En France nous sommes encore épargnés,pour combien de temps?

The kid's kidney is fetched for only an iPhone and an iPad due to supply and demand. China is not short of organs for sale as prisoners are routinely executed for their organs.

It's a shame the kid only sold part of his body parts. Maybe he should have sold all of his body parts so that I wouldn't have to put up with his waste of my precious oxygen.

Seeing as how the kidney only fetched $3,500, I'm guessing a car would be a bit optimistic; especially considering the cost of the plane fare.

It's official! He's an Apple fan boy! Most in the USA just settle for paying twice what it's worth as Apple's profit statements will attest! He's going to run out of organs quick with the obsolescence cycle on Apple products.

Wow. I myself being a cheapskate have the Net10, unlimited calls, text and web for $50.00 plus tax. which means I was too poor to afford any Apple products and realized after a while that I wasn't missing that much for my lifestyle. Still go online and call and text whoever I want, whenever I want, not to mention great coverage. I don't think he sold his kidney just to buy the stuff. It is sad that he felt he had to do that to make money at all.

The broadband card for my laptop is so old, I had to research and tell Verizon how to fix it. I have no other problems with that 5 or 6 year card and the plan is $60 a month unlimited. It may be less than 3 gigs but it's all I ever had and I am to poor to change. I like the new Apple products but I can't afford the upgrade and I don't need it. If I sold a kidney it would be to pay off student loans, credit card debt and go back to school to get a job not for an iPhone or an iPad. Stupid may have killed himself for something that will be out of style in a few months.

If this kid needs a laptop he should get in touch with Dick Cheney.

It's his body, no one should be judging him for what he does with his body.
