France Floor Collapse: Child Dead In Pierrefitte Easter Ceremony As Building Crumbles

04/ 8/12 01:52 PM ET AP

PARIS -- French officials say a floor has collapsed in a building where an Easter religious ceremony was being held, killing a 6-year-old and seriously injuring four other people.

The collapse occurred Sunday afternoon at a two-story house used by an evangelical group for religious ceremonies in Stains, a town near Paris. Local officials say a 2-year-old child and a 42-year-old woman are in critical condition, and around 30 other people are slightly injured.

Officials say that number could rise as about 100 emergency workers continue to work at the scene.

Between 100 and 150 people, mainly from the Haitian community, were in the building's second floor when it collapsed beneath them during a Mass.

This isn't about whether there is a God or not, this is about a child who died and people who are injured. How horrible that this happened! I hope everyone who was injured will have a swift recovery!

Yes but also men construct bad building and/or poorly maintain them after they're built and/or overcrowd structures unable to take the weight. Certainly this should be investigated so no tragedy like this can happen again. Terribly sad.

This is the very thing I hate whenever there is awful things happen, if you survive "God was on your side " if not God works in mysterious ways. stop saying that crap it is hard to hear for those who lose, that in some way they were not worthy. It was too many people in a building they chose to gather in.God gave us free will including investigating how many people can gather in a floor. The baby was worthy it was a terrible accident.I know you mean well but I promise you it hurts when it is you who have lost such an innocent.take care

I guess in France public places don't have to post that only a certain number of people be on the floor at one time. It could have been prevented. RIP to the family and friends

It stated a house, I would hazard a guess that it was a private house being used, hence not designed for that capacity.

I figured that, but if used for public or private it would need a permit, and would have to be inspected by structional inspectors. I cat imagine 100 people on any inhouse structure.
