'Hunger Games' Box Office Win: Film Bests 'American Reunion' To Remain The Top Movie In The Country

Posted: Updated:

"Hunger Games" is the top movie in the country again, easily besting "American Reunion" and bringing in $12.9 million on Friday alone, THR reports.

The film obviously remains a mega hit for Lionsgate and is expected to hit the $300 million mark in record time (excluding summer and holiday releases). It's a massive win, holding off not only "Reunion" but also James Cameron's "Titanic" re-release, which brought in $7.1 million on Friday and is expected to make $15.5 million over the weekend.

Universal's "American Reunion" racked up $9.2 million on Friday and will bring in $22 million over its opening weekend. Those are respectable figures, especially considering the type of reviews the film has received.

"Hunger Games" will be the first movie to pass the $300 million mark since last year's "Transformers" sequel ($352.4 million cumulative gross) and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" ($381 million).

It's unclear, however, if the continued success of the film will help Lionsgate solve the franchise's biggest problem. Conflicting press reports have in recent days offered a dramatic storyline in the search for a "Catching Fire" director. "Fire" is the second novel in the Suzanne Collins series on which the "Hunger Games" movies are based.

On Friday, it was reported that "Games" director Gary Ross had withdrawn from the sequel, but sources told Deadline Saturday that he was very much still interested in directing the sequel.
