GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Tim Tebow drew a crowd of about 15,000 to an outdoor Easter church service Sunday, telling the gathering it's important to be outspoken about faith while admonishing athletes about not being better role models.

"In Christianity, it's the Pope and Tebow right now," Celebration Church pastor Joe Champion he said. "We didn't have enough room to handle the Pope."

Tebow – devout Christian, backup NFL quarterback and cultural phenomenon – has a flock of admirers drawn as much to his religious leanings as his Heisman Trophy skills.

Tebow told them he welcomed the attention on his convictions as well as the "Tebowing" prayer pose he often strikes on the field because it puts his faith and prayer in the public conversation.

"It's being talked about," he said. "That's exciting."

Some at the "Easter on the Hill" morning service under sunny skies about 20 miles north of Austin drove more 100 miles to hear Tebow speak. The service took on the feel of a rock concert with more than a 100 school buses shuttling people to the sprawling mega-church campus from local shopping centers and the nearby college.

The service was peppered with lively Christian rock songs and Tebow took the large stage to cheers from those who could see him while others toward the back watched on massive video screens. He sat for a 20-minute interview with Champion to talk about his faith and its role in his public life.

"It's OK to be outspoken about your faith," Tebow said.

He also took a shot at professional athletes who insist they are not role models.

"Yes you are. You're just not a good one," Tebow said.

Champion asked Tebow what he thought needed to change culturally in America.

"First and foremost is what this country was based on: one nation under God. The more that we can get back to that," Tebow said to applause.

Although church officials had said they typically get their biggest crowds on Easter, Tebow was clearly the big draw Sunday. Several hundred started heading toward the exits after Tebow spoke, not waiting for Champion's main Sunday sermon so they could avoid the 80-degree heat and beat the traffic.

Some couldn't wait for the official 8 a.m. opening to the church grounds and showed up hours early.

Debbie Sandoval and her husband and two sons arrived before sunrise. They wore Tebow's Jets jerseys and set up camp close the large soundstage with a row of chairs.

"I love that boy. ... He's like my third son," said Sandoval, who is not a regular member of the church but wasn't going to miss a chance to hear Tebow speak. A self-described "lifelong Broncos fan," Sandoval said she became a Jets fan because of Tebow. The quarterback led the Broncos to the playoffs last season and was acquired by the Jets in a trade March 21.

"Everything about this young man's extraordinary life is special," Sandoval said.

Amanda O'Hara drove about 100 miles from San Antonio on Saturday and got to the church about 4:30 a.m. "to be one of the first ones here."

"I only got about four hours sleep, I was so excited," O'Hara said. "He doesn't hide who he is. Parents should see him as a role model."

The crow included people dressed in Easter bunny costumes and one person dressed as the Sesame Street character Elmo. About an hour before the service, Elmo dropped to a knee with a toddler boy to mimic Tebow's prayer pose.

Media access to the event was tightly controlled inside the roped off field. Reporters and photographers were required to have an escort when walking through the crowd before the service. Television cameras were allowed to record only a portion of Tebow's speech and no live video streaming of the service was permitted.

Church officials initially expected up to 20,000 and said Tebow's appearance on Easter Sunday was coincidental. Church spokeswoman Tara Wall said it was Tebow who reached out to Champion with a request to appear and Sunday was the best date available.

Mike Benaglio and his wife, Debbie, sat on a blanket.

"I'm a fan of any pro athlete who stands up for his faith," he said. "We're thrilled to be part of this. It's not about football. Whatever gets more people over to the cross, I'm in favor of."

I have seen this over and over again in the past 30 years. Christians getting excited over stars and celebrities. In most cases, those very stars and celebrities ended tragically, to the chagrin of those who promoted them. Case in point. There are men and women who have been studying the word of God for 4,5,6,7,8 years and are called of God to preach. Yet, they are sidelined by ministries interested not in the message of the Lord, but the opinionated faith of an athlete or star. This is disrespectful to the dedicated called of God. 2nd--Our Good Lord has not called stars and celebrities to preach his Gospel. This is solely for the called of God which St. Paul points out in Ephesians 4:11-12 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:---There is no mention of the famed or celebrity. Giving testimony is important, but it is not to be done in the pulpit of God. That is reserved by Our Good Lord for those he has called to preach his Gospel.

If its okay "to speak out about your faith" as Tebow says; then, in our free country, it should be equally okay to speak out against these out-dated, primitive, myth and superstition based religions.

What can be asserted without proof, can be dismissed without proof.

Timmy is so irrelevant, so much so that im going to spend the next two hours reading about him and what all these jealous people have to say. TT is a terrible football player, yes I know he won the Heisman, and a National Championship. But come on, he will never win in the NFL!. Well, that Pittsburgh game was lucky! So was the Jets Game, and the Bears game, and , and I know he threw for a bunch of yards in beating the Vikings, but I heard that their DB's didnt belong in the NFL either. TT is just a moron, I know he graduated from Florida in 3 1/2 years, yes, while playing major college football, but he probably just took Bible classes. Oh, ya, FU isnt a christian school, but.....

I have no doubt Tebow is a Christian, but he is certainly not a follower of Jesus or anything Jesus taught his disciples. ( Matthew 6:6)

Also- why would you condemn someone when you yourself don't even try to follow Christ? That is like a passenger on a plane saying the pilot should not being flying the plane because you read something in a brochure. You are clueless, yet you have a lot to say about others who do what you cannot do.

When I get to my destination, by aircraft, I thank the pilot and "aerospace science."  When I get well from an illness I thank modern medicine and my doctor.  Christians thank an Invisible Magic Man in the Sky; that is one difference between you and I.

"First and foremost is what this country was based on: one nation under God. The more that we can get back to that"

- Tim Tebow

"As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion..."

- Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli (unanmiously agreed upon by the US senate in 1797).

Football players already have a bad rep about not being too bright, Tebow needs to keep his trap shut about things he isn't at all well informed about. One nation Under God is a phrase added wasn't added into our pledge until 1954. I think an official document agreed upon by our entire senate merely 30 years after this nation's birth better reflects what this nation was founded on.

Check mate.

That's his problem with going to New York. Whether he does that or not, a disguised version of that story will show up on Page 6. It will be there with photos if he really does. How will he respond to the question, "Tim, do you think it's appropriate for a Christian to snort coke off of a hooker?"

He's not in Denver anymore.

Please, Tebow has been partying it up in Denver too, nothing new about New York, except everyone there isn't as naive as his little group of worshippers. He's about as genuine as Tammy Faye Baker.

"Whatever gets more people over to the cross, I'm in favor of."

Thanks, Constantine, you coward.

I went to a Jesuit High School and spent the first year learning the history of the religion.... That made me the agnostic that I am today.

I saw an interesting show a few weeks ago about Clergymen that have turn into agnostic/atheists. The reason they turned was that they actually spent an extended time studying their Bibles.

Apparently some of you think that catholicism is better than evangelicanism...I'm neither, but I'm free for debate here, where comments can be replied to. I was raised Anglican, so I dont hav e a dog in either fight but it seems that catholics feel some superiority over evangelicals, when they ruled europe with a bloody and iron fist for almost 1000 years.

The Pagans were also responsible for kil, ling millions. Anytime you create an organization based on fear and obedience, they will always try to convert the non-believers through violence or bribery.

It's not just religions. Governments justify killing millions for all kinds of different reasons.

Try to keep some perspective though. We are talking about the present.

Absolutely true, but its important to remember the history, especially when people are condemning a football player for giving a sermon to an open field of people who voluntarily attended.

Agreed. So why can't Tebow lead a sermon? Comparing him to Jim Jones is a bit of a leap here. Reggie White was a preacher, but I wouldn't attend his services. Doesn't mean that he doesn't have something to offer. The whole controversy seems to start with Tebow himself and I just don't get it. Seems like a good genuine kid.

Hey buddy, glad you were right here.

I'm not an evangelical, just have a special place in my heart for catholics who dont know the history of their faith. Want to debate?
01:29 PM on 04/11/2012
I have a special place in my heart for people who think they know the Catholic Church but have not studied the teachings.. I don't hide from the warts. The Protestant Reformation and what followed was the result of stupidity on the part of the leadership of the Church. But do I blame all Baptists for the basketball scandal (which included a murder) at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor? No. Do I blame all Lutherans for The BTK Killer? No. Do you want to debate religious values or failures of leadership? And we will review the good that was done as well and the good people who served and, some cases, died for the Catholic Christian faith. Full spectrum. Ready when you are.

Tebow's father's ministery has a huge marketing group. If they can make people believe that Catholics aren't Christians, it's pretty easy to persuade some people to believe Tim is a decent quarterback.
