Barack Obama Campaign Attacks Mitt Romney Over Swiss Bank Account

Mitt Romney Tax

WASHINGTON -- A conference call organized by President Barack Obama's presidential campaign on Monday to push for higher tax rates for millionaires quickly descended into an attack on Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney for his secretive Swiss bank account, with Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) declaring that no presidential aspirant has ever had such an exotic financial portfolio.

"I asked Warren Buffet in a meeting we had recently, 'Have you ever had a Swiss bank account?' He said, 'No, there are plenty of good banks in the United States,'" Durbin said.

"So I started asking people: 'Why do you have Swiss bank account?' One, you believe the Swiss Franc is a stronger currency than the United States dollar. And that is apparently the decision the Romney family made during the Bush presidency. And secondly, you want to conceal something. You want to hide something. Why would you have a Swiss bank account instead of one in the United States? I would like to ... ask the press to really press some of these questions, the obvious questions. When is the last time a presidential candidate for the United States had a Swiss bank account? I think the answer is never."

It was the most direct the campaign has been on the topic of Romney's offshore funds. The issue arose during the heart of the GOP primary, when Romney released 2010 tax returns and 2011 estimates. Recently, the Obama campaign has tried to revive the charge that the former Bain Capital executive is playing loose with the tax code.

The Romney campaign did not immediately return a request for comment.

Monday's call, which featured campaign manager Jim Messina, Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Durbin, started out with a defense of the Buffett rule, a plan named after billionaire investor Warren Buffett and designed to address income inequality. But in the course of calling for millionaires to pay higher tax rates, the participants began working to depict the presumptive GOP nominee as the embodiment of an unfair tax code, while urging him to make more information about his financial portfolio public.

"Romney should meet the same standard now so the American people can judge whether he would be a suitable president and whether there would be any conflict of interest that could cloud his judgment," Messina said. "I see no reason why he would give John McCain 23 years and the American public only two."

If Romney were to release 23 years of tax returns, it would constitute a historic amount of transparency on his part. Obama himself released eight years' worth of tax returns during the 2008 presidential campaign. When pressed whether the president would match Romney and release 23 years' worth himself, Messina all but ducked the question.

"We have gone back to 2000," he said. "This is the standard that Romney set when he was talking to McCain about the VP deal. We have been very clear about what we have laid out. We have done tons of transparency throughout government."

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Rep. Baldwin represents Illinois. She represents Wisconsin.

Obama's 'Get _Mitt 'campaign

During my exposure to Barack Obama's way of campaigning, when he ran for the presidency three years ago, I formed the view, one that grew ever stronger, that if he ran again he would campaign in the same way.  He would be straightforward, poised, and positive, or at least he would be more these things than any of the other contenders and, when the GOP  Read More...

Why is it anyone's business who has a Swiss bank account and who does not? I wish I had one - does that make me bad?

We have plenty of good banks in the US as long as Obama is in office and giving them our tax dollars. I wonder how much money Buffett stood to lose if those banks had gone under? Imagine all the 1/4 millionares there would've been under the Fed Gaurantee? Think he did it for the working man?
06:52 PM on 05/01/2012
Well, since he donated $500M to Bank of America when it went backrupt, I guess we'll never really know now will we? Too bad he did it for working Americans he could have easily put the money in a swiss bank so it would be hidden by swiss privacy laws and not only evade taxes but also break federal full disclosure law. But, then again I guess as long as its law breaking the good old fashioned white collar way it really isn't a big deal. Yeah right!

Like our President said during the last Democratic Primary... whoever won, he or Hilary Clinton, the other would leave and go back to living their own life. A nice one. He and Michelle were both successful in their careers, and like the Clintons, SELF MADE.... I don't know where some Republicans get off saying Obama is against being successful... more GOP propaganda...

blah blah blah ...

Since 2008 "yes we can" Obama has proven that Democrats think in THREE WORD SENTENCES - war on women, dog on car, money in Swiss-bank, tax the rich, big bad corporations...

The ONLY 3 word sentence he won't utter is "jobs jobs jobs" and the one he is MOST horrified of is "cut the deficit"...

like the pot calling the kettle black. I hear key words like Terrorism, WMD, communism, uttered by republicans every time they open their mouth. this country needs balance of both republican and democratic policies. call me a democrat or a liberal! these are just words used to make stupid people hate you even before they even hear your ideas/policies. Without that label, were all just Americans with different ideas on how to help our country!

I've allways thought that Americans applaud success. Seems to me that has changed. Seems to me that instead of concentrating on creating jobs, the present administration is busy attacking successful people.
There will always be rich and poor people. We are born with different talents, different levels of initiative and drive and desire to take risks. Give everybody the same amount of money and before too long most of it will end up in the hands of a few.

The government doesn't have money and uses taxpayers' money to take care of those who need help (that's a must) and, at the same time, create the circumstances that make it easy to start and run businesses.

I think the US should introduce a consumption tax. Then you only pay tax if you buy the item! You also need to cancel yds, inches and ounces and switch to m, cm and ml! Easier!

we still applaud success.... but, when we come out of the ocean/sea we find our sandals have been stolen by those who were a bit less successful ... we usually don't get too angry, but then the beach towel goes too ... thankful for letting us keep our wallet, we find our room keys are also gone... from where the new digital camera has been removed... along with the cell phone...

which would all be, almost "ok", if we didn't get a letter, about a month later, from the thieves complaining that the credit on the cell phone was not sufficient, the camera memory card too small, and the leather sandals should have been treated with grease from original seal fat to keep the leather supple...

If Obama hadn't bailed out US banks, all his rich contributors would only be 1/4 miliionares now. Maybe Mitt knows how US banks really are. Obama didn't do it to save the working man's money.
07:27 PM on 05/01/2012
I've wondered if all the people who talk about Obama bailing out US banks even know or understand what happens to a nation's economy when its banks fail. Remember something called the Depression and how a lot of wealthy people committed suicide because their money was gone as well. Read a history book so you can make your decisions and statements from a somewhat educated position. Not only did Mitt and Ann fail to disclose $3M in a swiss bank, but they also failed to disclose 23 investments, and not only does the GOP trivialise it but they and Mitt also think that his $374K income earned in speaking fees are small potatoes. When will people realize that this man who is running for the highest office in our country has violated federal full disclosure; not once but twice -- 2007 and again in 2011. Mitt and about 50 thousand other wealthy Americans hid large sums of money in swiss banks ... has anyone considered why, could it be that Switzerland has no income tax; and with their privacy laws those accounts and their balances weren't going to be reported to our government. Tax evasion plain and simple. So, its ok if the Mittster violated federal full disclosure and evaded taxes? Amazing, simply amazing.

Sadly, if you told me that all of the candidates for POTUS in recent history had Swiss bank accounts, I would believe it. The average man cannot run for such an office. It takes a millionaire to just get a ticket to ride, and then he must sell his soul to the devil to get traction like physical and monetary support. Compromise, compromise and more compromise ! !

What I don't understand is how people who trust science with their medical care and get on airplanes they trust will not fall out of the sky, use their computers etc. etc., do not want to trust what science says about protecting the ecological balance and diversity of our planet. It is the only one we have. Why gamble? Does not seem very "conservative" to me.

nope.... 5 billion years ago the entire cosmos was the size of a baseball, of, obviously VERY dense matter... then it went "bang" (thus it is now know as the big "bang" - that's the "scientific name") ... and then started to "expand"

of course, it has expanded and expanded and it is now trillions of light years "wide" and will either continue to expand into ... into... into nothing ... until it is a dark and lonely cosmos....

unless some big black hole doesn't form and make it collapse into a baseball size entity again and hear it go "bang" again ....

damn it, everything runs on two rails... there's never a third option that anyone can find...
