'Dark Knight Rises' Rating: Batman Finale Reportedly Gets PG-13 From MPAA

Posted: Updated:

The "Dark Knight Rises" rating has reportedly been revealed.

Collider.com reports that Christopher Nolan's coming Batman finale was given a PG-13 rating by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense sequences of violence and action, some sensuality and language." That's not a total surprise, given both the film's trailer -- which features riots, explosions, gunplay and the collapse of a football field and the presumed deaths of many football players -- and its pedigree. Both "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" were also rated PG-13.

That's good news for the box office hopes of "The Dark Knight Rises": were "Rises" rated R, it could significantly curtail the earning power of what many predict will be the highest grossing film of the summer. Director Ridley Scott has run into some of those issues with his own summer blockbuster, "Prometheus." Scott and Twentieth Century Fox are apparently still deciding what rating would be more appropriate for the film, knowing full well that the difference between PG-13 and R could number millions of lost ticket dollars.

Expect an official MPAA announcement about "The Dark Knight Rises" soon. Starring Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Liam Neeson, "The Dark Knight Rises" arrives in theaters on July 20.
