On Monday, Facebook announced that it would acquire popular photography app Instagram for $1 billion in cash and shares.

So what does this mean for Instagram users -- more than 30 million strong on Android and iOS platforms combined -- who have come to know and love the service since it launched in 2010?

Mark Zuckerberg, the social network's co-founder CEO, penned a post on his Facebook Timeline on Monday afternoon assuring Instagram's more than 30 million users that the acquisition would not mean the end of Instagram.

"We believe these are different experiences that complement each other. But in order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram's strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook," wrote Zuck. "That's why we're committed to building and growing Instagram independently. Millions of people around the world love the Instagram app and the brand associated with it, and our goal is to help spread this app and brand to even more people."

He also said that Instagram users would still be able to post their photos on other social networks besides Facebook. There will still be an option for users to withhold their pics from Facebook, and to follow people on Instagram and maintain lists of Instagram followers that are separate from Facebook friends.

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom posted a similar announcement on his company's blog.

Zuckerberg also noted that this is the largest product Facebook's ever acquired, in terms of its large user base. "We don't plan on doing many more of these [types of acquisitions], if any at all," he wrote.

According to Facebook's press release, the transaction will be completed later this quarter.

Basically there are a group of people who have all the money in the world, with nothing to do with it, throwing it around investing in stupid stuff with no business model (or not enough to justify the price) like instagram, groupon, facebook, meanwhile everyone else is struggling.

As Frank White said "You got rich while everybody starved"

Perfectly said. Whoever thought that someday a website (that's EXACTLY what Facebook is) would be worth more than the device in which you view it.

I fail to understand your outrage. Zucherberg (or more likely, his investment advisors) has made a decision to expand and improve his business. This is common practice in the business world. Facebook made Zuch a billionaire, as Microsoft did Bill Gates. Both of these businesses have provided employment to hundreds of thousands of people. Yeah, both of them got obscenely rich doing it, but what would you have them do, simply give their profits away?

Facebook found a way to make money on Fcebook. Bill Gates became a billionare by selling copies of his software.

How exactly does Instagram make money, if at all? What is it that they do that FB couldn't do on its own?

Hey Zuckerberg... how about you spend that money making FB intuitive, or god forbid, attractive? More of the Gates model... just keep collecting capital, stealing the ideas of others and ruining them post-haste post-buyout.

Facebook et al, and the juicy irony of calling any/all of them "SOCIAL" media is simply too beautiful. They've ALL done nothing but RUIN any REAL "social" aspect to ANY/ALL forms of communication. The digital Emperor's New Clothes... sad state of affairs...

It's incredibly interesting how Facebook has not only changed the way people communicate around the world, but has actually altered social behavior on a permanent basis. Personal privacy, subtlety, romance and reputation have all been turned on their head in what Aldous Huxley would undoubtedly refer to as our "brave new world."
